Salve
I found this on Nova Roma website: Budget for 2753 AUC. I believe voting was
done on this before I became a citizen.
<<1. Coinage--Two sided die for a coin would cost $600 and to create a base
run of 5,000 coins would cost $1000 even. That gives us a firm price of $1600
plus shipping costs which would be approximately $30.00
Note:---This above proposal will provide Nova Roma with a die that could be
used for successive mintings, and 5,000 coins stamped in bronze. Factoring in
the cost of the die with the first run of coins, NR would be paying $.32 per
coin. A good profit could be made by selling the coins at even $.50 apiece
and an additional minting would leave us at a total cost of only $.20 per
coin.
**I have left any of these costs out of the budget itself for now. These are
figures to look at to help the Senate plan future costs.**>>
Is there any new information on the Nova Roma coinage?

Salve
To my knowledge, nothing has been done regarding this. However, the Ordo
Equaestor has grown by 2 business. Unfortunatley I am at work and the only
business I can recall off-hand was the Roman Clothing. There is another
business that one of our citizens had gotten approved by Fl. Vedius
Germanicus and myself but to this date it is not listed on the Website.

Actually, in California the Federal Tax on Gas is 24.4 cents and the state
tax is like another 14.4.
With gas prices in Cali over 1.65-1.80 Cents a gallon....that would only
reduce it somewhere near 40 cents.
See in Cali, I dont know about the rest of the country, every gas station
needs to state how much of the gas is taxed, per gallon.

Salve: Here are a couple of interesting sites where you can test your knowledge of the Gods and Goddesses of our nation of Nova Roma. Perhaps we can discover where we need to improve our knowledge, and get an idea of how much we have learned. There is also an introductory course on Classical Latin being set up on the first site. You have to do a bit of exploring on the first site to find the test, and it is in connection with a textbook that you can order if I'm not mistaken, but is still fun to do the test. I hope that you all find this interesting and useful. http://chss2.montclair.edu/classics/romemyth.htm

Marius, Marius, Marius....this has EVERYTHING to do with it! The higher the
gas prices, the less inclination to travel. The less inclination to travel,
the less inclination to go to Roman Days. And not to mention, the less
inclination to spend money on books about things Roman!

Does anyone here play Civilization 2?
I am thinking of making a Nova Roma scenario for Civ2. The Roman
civilization is threatened by a coalition of mythical and historical enemies
from various eras. The player would be leading the small Nova Roman
civilization, and the goal would be to form an alliance with Rome, and defeat
the enemies of Rome.
To play this scenario, one would need to have Civilization 2 Multi-Player
Gold, OR Civlization 2 with the Fantastic Worlds add-on disk. Is anyone
interested in this idea?

Salve,
Yes, and no! We have all the info, but are at a standstill. While there are
certainly folks in NR that aren't interested in, and even strongly oppose the
idea of minting our own coinage, I personally feel that it would in many ways
broaden our reach and our appearance of legitimacy as a sovereign entity. Not
only is coinage something "tangible" that one can hold in the hand, it's a
large undertaking that's a sign of long-term dedication and organization.
(Oh, and I think it would be a *huge* money generating enterprise for us!)
I've checked out many possible ways of producing coinage. So far the best
quality and price seems to be offered by professional minting companies,
which stamp out "world quality" coinage. To do this we would have to purchase
two custom dies, (a top side and a bottom side) at a total cost of $600.
Minting a first run of 5,000 coins would cost about a thousand dollars. The
end result would be coins that Nova Roma could offer for 50 cents each and
make a profit on. Conceivably we could even guarantee the value and use them
as actual "trade tokens" as festivals, etc.!
I have a solid quote from a coin company. They're ready to go whenever we can
come up with $1,600. We could have coins in three weeks if we had the money!
Unfortunately that's more than we have in the entire treasury at the moment.
I have always intended to underwrite a major portion of producing coins
myself ... but right now Patricia Cassia and I have a wedding and honeymoon
to pay for. That means I won't be able to personally invest in such a project
till July at the very earliest. Funding the initial outlay for NR flags was
the best I could do this season! (The flags are selling well, by the way, and
*that* project has been a great success. There are still some flags
available, BTW, if anyone is interested.)
This might well be an issue for the Senate to discuss at this point, if it's
a topic that interests anyone. There is enough money in the treasury to fund
at least a portion of the project. If the Senate were willing to approve a
go-ahead, donations or even advance-orders from Citizens might fund the
rest...

I'd be willing to make an advance order, but would have to see the
design of the coins first.
Who and what would appear on these coins? Romans from the Republican
or Imperial periods? Gods? I'd prefer to see coins that somewhat resemble
ancient coins, with the addition of the Nova Roma name.
Romulus or Jupiter might be good subjects for the first coin, backed with
the SPQR image from the flag.

Salvete Michael et omnes,
Thanks for your questions regarding my "discovery" of and thoughts
regarding Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency.
First, I must confess that, until I found this volume, I was
unfamiliar with Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers. Thus, I cannot compare
CLfOP with any of their other publications. However, based on my
impressions of CLfOP, I would be grateful if you could provide me
with the names of other Latin-language publications/materials by
Bolchazy.
As to whether CLfOP is fashioned for teenagers (high school?) or
college level, I would say that it is not an elementary book -- users
of the volume, in my opinion, should already have a fair to good
foundation in the grammar and syntax of the language if they are to
benefit from the book. Unfortunately, because I have been outside
the educational arena for many years, I cannot speak cogently to the
level of the book based on current academic criteria. (I do have an
acquaintance, however, who has told me that she is using the book in
her college-level studies of Latin.) Overall, I would say that the
book is "general" in character, and not directed to a particular age
group, but rather assuming a good foundation in the language and the
maturity of expression that would be concomitant with that training.
Finally (and this is not a "cop out"), I would suggest that its level
would quite likely be judged differently (higher or lower) depending
on the local academic expectations of the geographical area or school
district in which it was used.
If you have the opportunity to review the book, Michael, I would be
sincerely grateful for your thoughts and comments.

Salve!
I am working on updating the Century Point and Tribes. But, I am
missing information. I know that our Consuls Fabius and Audens have
appointed scribes and Assenssi (sp.) However, that information is not
on the website. I need that information, if I am to recalculate
correctly.
Also, if any other magistrate has appointed scribes, please forward that
information as well. I am getting my information from the Nova Roma
Website. And, if that information is not listed there, then it will not
be counted in the recalculations.
Thank you for your assistance.
