Subject: Why Hunt the Lupercal?

A few days ago I posted, for any who would be interested, what information
I found about archeology and the Lupercal cave. The Lupercal has not been
found, and may possibly not even exist anymore.

Someone asked me in the chat room why I am so interested in this one cave.
There is so much archeology to enjoy, so why is this cave so intriguing?

In the Turkish city of Urfa, there is a large, ancient pond filled with
big, fat fish. For thousands of years, Urfa's fishponds have been a sacred
site. The Mesopotamians dedicated the pond to the Moon God. During the
Greek age, the fish were decorated with jewels. The fish ponds even play a
role in Muslim legend.
There have always been special places, maybe not especially unique or
special in and of themselves, that people have felt to be somehow different,
and sacred.

The search for the Lupercal for me goes beyond archeology. It would be
wonderful of course, to excavate and visit the very cave where the ancient
Romans commemorated the finding of Romulus and Remus with the she-wolf. But
to me, the hunt for the Lupercal is part of the search for our origins and
our meaning, which goes above mere facts of history and quantitative
knowledge. The Lupercal is a place where much of my Western identity was
nursed by the mythical wolf. I think it is part of a spiritual search, for
our roots, our meaning, and our values.

My Dear;

I would love to go, but my leg is still in a half-cast and I am
forbidden to leave my home unless the activity is a sit-down activity.
I am battling a diabetic infection, and with the poor blood flow in my
legs is a long and arduous process. I would like very much to do this,
but I find that it will be physically impossible for me. Marcus amd
Patricia are getting ready for a wedding and the other lady in
Providence has been ill. Dex has indicated a previous commitment.
Palladius is just back from vacation with his family and Marius
Merrullus would have a long and arduous drive with wife and infant
child. Nobody is neglecting the opporunity, as all have good reasons
for not being able to attend. I hope that you enjoy yourself, but
remember that not all are as free as you are, at this point.

Salvete omnes

Today is an holiday (feriae). This day (QRCF = Quando Rex Comitiavit Fas),
is for special religious observance. The Roman king (before the Republic)
and later probably the Rex Sacrorum would perform a sacrifice whose nature
is forgotten.

This day was called the Day of Blood (Dies Sanguis) and it would end the
previous nine days of fasting for the worshipers of Magna Mater (Cybele).
During a procession coloured by the sound of exotic instruments of oriental
flavour, with tambourines marking the rithm, the Galli priestst of Cybele
perform self-flagellation and self-emasculation (in immitation of Attis) and
offer their genitals to Cybele in Her temple on the Palatine hill. Roman
citizens are forbidden of performing these acts and cannot become Galli.
This day is considered of bad pressage to start any important enterprises.
As Suetonius interestingly tells us, during the civil war that ensued after
Nero was deposed, Otho marched against Vitellius in this day and was
defeated and killed.

This is the last day of the Festival of Mars. Do not forget to include Mars
in your prayers, Mars is our protector.

Valete et Pax Deorum vobiscum

Oh, Merlinia, we'd love to go, but with our wedding fast approaching we
just can't take the time! We went last year and hope to go again in the
future. See you at Roman Days?

Salve, Censor Sulla;

I think perhaps you will have to resend the gentleman's voter code to
him on a more personal channel. You have used the Onelist. I wonder if
you could ask those citizens seeking voter code information to use the
Censor address, or we will be drowning in "voter code" E-Mail. (Grin!!!)

Vale, Respectfully;

Salve, Pompeia Cornelia Strabo;

If you will go to the following Web Page:

><a href="http://www.saint-erasmus.org/<" target="_top" >http://www.saint-erasmus.org/<</a>

and click on the block Guild Charter you will find a document that looks
very much like the original document that was forwarded to me by Venator
a year or so ago.

This is the kind of document that I had visualized when I asked you to
contact Venator. I suspect that he has "puffed up" his oiginal work.
If you will down load this document onto hard copy then I can work with
you more closely in working up something to present to the Senate in
April.

Once that is ready, then we can look at the original document that you
have done to adapt it into an internal organization document for the
proposed Sodalitas, in a little more liesurely fashion. I do apologize
for this misunderstanding. I had no reason to believe that Venator
would "rewrite" his documentation. Thank you for your efforts to date.
You have certainly been most patient and hardworking.

Vale, Respectfully;
Marcus Audens
