Avete et Salutatio... NovaRoma
Hello and Greetings from Gallio Velius Marsallas,
Praefectus, Legio XXIV Media-Atlantia;
Tribune Militaris - NovaRoma - Gens Velia
aka George W. Metz
13 Post Run Newtown Square, PA 19073-3014

http://www.legionxxiv.org
Some time ago (weeks) I requested for the second time,
a change to the Album Gentium on the website, concerning
the wrong individual being listed as Paterfamilias of my
Gens "Velia"; which is also wrongly listed as "Vellia".
Consul Sulla indicated that he would make the changes.
I have checked the Album Gentium and the changes still
have not been made. No animosity toward Sulla; but
what does it take to have this routine housekeeping done
on the site?
Servius Vellius Germanicus should be changed to
Gallio Velius Ma--------las at <a h--------"/post/nova--------?p--------ctID=034056178009193116062046186246114012071048139" >legionxxiv@--------
along with family members:
Servius Velius Germanicus
Augustus Velius Natalis
Flavius Crispus (Velius) Candidianus
who was submitted for NR citizen, but never has
been listed or acknowledged.
Accepting new members = Yes
Patron Deities = Mars Mithras
I have offered twice in the past to assist in maintaining
the NR Website and received little or no response.
I am again offering to perform routine maintenance on
the "site". Give me access to the NR Site and I will be
happy to perform routine chores such as, changes to
e-mail and snail-mail addresses, paterfamilia names
syntax / spelling errors and such other "housekeeping"
matters as may be submitted by the citizens directly or
through the Censors / Senators, as may be appropriate.
I am retired and would have the time to do minor website
maintenance promptly, probably within 24 hours, if the
volume of changes were modest.
I have experience with FrontPage-98.
There is a lot of pleading for help on the NR List.
I rise for the third time to offer some help.
Does NovaRoma need or want my help or not!
I remain, as always,

Salve, Graecus;
I wish to add my thanks to that of Censor Sulla for your timely
assistance as Webmaster. Although, as you say it was your duty as a
Roman, In my mind it deserves my recognition and thanks as well.
Would you please contact Gallio Velius Marsallas

And arrange for him to take a position as a scribus for the Webmaster,
or some similar position as needed. He is a very capable gentleman, and
wishes to help with the Nova Roma Website. Were I in charge of the
Website, I would have taken him up on his offer immediately. I suspect
that his request has "fallen through the crack" to nobodys fault but
twice is too much and three times would be unthinkable. Thank you for
your assistance in this matter.

Salvete,
Hopefully someone can officially take Gallio up on his generous and much
needed offer! There are *always* things that need doing on the Nova Roma
website, and there are several ways we could expand if we had more people
with the time and skill to do site design. Hopefully we'll not only get more
offers but also use them wisely... so that our main site can become an even
better resourse for modern Roman interest! :)

Thank you for making this distinction -- I think you hit the nail on the
head. The foundation of my approach to the Religio is a personal one, as
you may soon see, if my articles on Religio Romana start to appear in the
Eagle. If not, email me privately, and I will send them to you
personally.
My take on Religio is that it first began as a focus on the hearth and
home (thus, "hearth" = focus in Latin) and expanded to community and
state. Accordingly, I would say that at the heart of their beliefs,
Romans worked to develop personal (albeit contractual) relationships with
the Gods. By the time the state got involved, there was no such personal
relationship (for the most part). I think the gods are much like us --
they are pleased by our devotion and attention and thus, are more willing
to act positively on behalf of those for whom they sense such devotion.
I realize this may not be historically supportable, but re-read some of
Ovid's "dialogues" with gods in the _Fasti_, and you may get a sense of
what I'm talking about.

I sincerely hope that this rude outburst was only due to a lack of
information.
When I first attempted to join Nova Roma, in early December 1999, I used in
my application a Roman gens which was unfortunately already in use (It was a
guessing game because the Album Gentium was not on the website at all). I
would have also gladly joined an existing gentes but I had no way of
acurately knowing which was closest to where I lived.
After reading in the edicts that "Because of the limited number of known
Roman names any reasonable name will be accepted" I decided to simply go with
a Romanized name. Gentle Pontitff Marcis Cornelius Felix I sincerely
apologize if I have offended any with my choice of an original name. BUT
because you were blinded by your anger you missed the reason why I was
writing the original letter. Thanks to the efficient work of the Honorable
Censor Sulla Felix I no longer bare the name which you found so offensive.
My gens has been replaced with a real Roman name Titinia.

Iulius Titinius Antonius

Salve,
Yes, this was indeed a problem. ESPECIALLY since it has been required that a
Citizen must have a Roman name before their application would be accepted!
We've been lucky not to have worse things happen, and the name "Thompsonus"
at least got you started. :) It is great to see that the "bumps" in the
process are now being sorted out.

Salvete,
To date, the plan has been to produce simple bronze or copper coinage for
trade use, rather than a more expensive commemorative silver. The *good* news
with this is that we can have a coin a full one inch (25mm) around, at a sale
price of only 50 cents US each to Citizens. They would be professionally
stamped coins similar to those shown on the Freedonia website.
One site will almost assuredly have the NR symbol, since it is an easy and
inexpensive image to reproduce. Candidates for the obverse symbol have
included Janus, Roma, Jupiter and Juno.

line with Nova Roma's needs. And it wouldn't have to be pure silver,
although that would certainly be nice. Maybe there is a way that could be
arranged. As to design, maybe we could come up with five ot ten possible
designs and then have a vote on which designs for obverse and reverse would
be used. If money is really tight, maybe the coins could be the same size
as actual Roman silver denari, about the size of a dime or nickel. >>

While Amethystia Iunia Crystallina Materna does speak in jest, still she
makes a good point. L. Cornelius Sulla, even though he suffering from

Salve.
There is no reason to be rude. Our Censors have the responsibility for
approving Roman Names. Its not the citizen's fault if a non-Roman name gets
approved....every potential application I get, I try to make certain the name
is appropriate or near appropriate. Dont blame the citizen. Ok, Marcus

First off, I want to thank everyone who has complimented my efforts in doing
my job as Censor. I am very touched. :) As Graecus said about
accomplishing his webmaster duties...I am just doing my my duty. :)
Again, thank you for the kind words, it means alot to me. And, I will
always continue to try to do a good job.
Also, about my illness, hehehe, there is no "illness." The surgery is more
along the lines of preventive maintainence. :) Anyway, I shall continue to
do my job with the same diligence I have always tried to do.
