Salvete omnes!!
As Aedile Plebis, I see my position as one in which I may be a vehicle
for drawing together the community of Nova Roma in real time. As such,
when I campaigned for this position, I resolved to work on having
citizens gather whenever and however possible with each other and with
others who are like-minded. Well, "festival season" is upon us, and the
most opportune time for us to get together and meet with other citizens
of Nova Roma is coming up soon, Roman Days, on June 9 through 11. At
this time, the only information I have is the date of this event, but I'm
hoping to post more information in the future. In the meantime, mark
your calendars, and I hope to see some of you there! (I still have to
see if I can get the days off work myself . . .)
I am also a member of Ar nDraoicht Fein, a neopagan Indo-Eurpean
religious recontructionist organization wherein those of us who follow a
Roman religious path are few and far between. I would dearly like to see
some overlap between citizens of Nova Roma who are interested in the
Religio and people in ADF. I figured, why reinvent the wheel when there
are existing festivals which would welcome citizens of Nova Roma with
open arms? I still would like to see Nova Roma instituting some of its
own gatherings, but in the meantime, I do have some ulterior motives.
:-)
I would like to invite any interested citizens to attend one or more the
upcoming festivals sponsered by various groups within ADF, most of which
are held in the eastern half of the US, alas (but all of which I hope to
attend and give presentations on the Religio Romana). Coming up soon
are:
"Wellspring," from May 17th through 21st at Brushwood
Folklore Center, near Sherman, NY (about 45 minutes
east of Erie, PA), which is sponserod by Stone Creed
Grove, ADF;
"Summerland," from August 4th through 6th in south-eastern
Ohio and sponsored by Triskele River Grove, ADF;
"Muin Mound Madness," from August 18th through 20th in
East Syracuse, NY and sponsored by Muin Mound Grove,
ADF;
Fall Fest and Druid Gathering (ADF has a large Celtic
population) from September 22nd through 24th and co-
sponsered by Red Oak Grove, ADF and Grove of the
Midnight Sun, ADF.
I know of one other great festival sponsered by the Grove of the Sacred
Crows, ADF in southern Massachusetts called "Triple Guild" (the bardic
guild gets the most time during this festival, and wow! is there some
talent!) which should be sometime in September or October this year.
Anyone with an interest in any of the above festivals or in organizing
festivals solely for Nova Roma, please contact me, and we can discuss the
details. I offer the hospitality of my humble home (it's only a
one-bedroom apartment, but I love to have guests) to citizens near or
expecting to be in southern New England who would like to visit with a
fellow Nova Roman. I don't know about everyone else, but I get tired of
existing in a "virtual community" and need real human (e.g., Roman)
contact. I know you folks are out there -- prove it!! Let's get
together sometime, eh??
VALE!!

Ludi Florales: Announcement from your Aedile Plebis |

Salvete, omnes!
As (the sole) Aedile Plebis, I have recently discovered that I am
responsible for holding the Ludi Florales games this month. (Yikes!)
While I am open to suggestions, I am of a literary bent and decided to
hold a literary contest.
It has occured to me that while many of us have been doing lots of
research on Roman culture and religion, I haven't seen anyone developing
a body of lore for Nova Roma. Thus, I would like to hold a writing
contest for which the requirement is to create a fictional, prose work
relating to some aspect of Roman culture, history, or religion. For
example, pieces submitted could be a modern re-telling of a well-known
myth, a short story depicting Roman life set any time from the founding
of Rome to its fall, or a fictional recounting of a historical event
during that same time frame.
At this time, I would like to solicit for at least one other judge to
help me choose the piece(s) which would be the most valuable additions to
Nova Roma's body of lore, and to encourage everyone with a creative mind
to get working on something to submit. The final deadline for
submissions will be the first day of the games, April 27, and the winners
will be announced on the final day, May 4. I will be donating at least
one of the prizes -- a framed print of a Roman sacrifice from a plate in
an old book. Donations of additional prizes will gladly be accepted.
I would also like to take this opportunity to ask anyone who has ideas
for holding virtual games to contact me privately, as I am totally
clueless as to how this might be done, but it sounds like great fun.
Here is an exerpt from the Nova Roma webpage concerning the Ludi
Florales:
"These games were held during the agricultural festival of Flora
(Floralia), which was originally moveable, but later took place on April
27 (April 28 in the Julian calendar), the dedication date of her temple
on the Aventive Hill. The festival was to ensure that the crops blossomed
well, so that the harvest would be good. The games were not held annually
until 173 BC, following a period of damage to crops. They were the
responsibility of the Aediles Plebis. Under the Empire, games continued
for six days to May 3, and began with theatrical performances and ended
with circus games and a sacrifice to Flora. In the circus performances,
hares and goats were let loose, and vetches, beans and lupins were
scattered among the spectators, all for reasons of fertility. Part of the
celebrations were nocturnal. Multicoloured clothes were customary. The
Floralia also came to be regarded by prostitutes as their feast. The
games drew crowds of commoners and prostitutes and were more licentious
than the Saturnalia."
(Please feel free to post to other lists.)

Salvete Civies,
This post concerns my recent change of gens and name.
(Most of you already know about it but I had not yet
made an official "announcement" on the main list.)
I have joined the Gens Cornelia and I have taken the
nomen Cornelia. I desired this because of my close
personal relationship with Lucius Cornelius Sulla. :)
Lucius Equitius has expressed frustration that I
dropped the nomen Equitia and we have discussed the
issue. I understand his frustration and I feel that
it would indeed be dishonorable to him to completely
abandon the name Equitia. I have respected him as a
fine Roman and regarded him fondly since the Gods
made our paths cross a year ago. :)
Therefore, I have decided to take the name Equitia
as an *agnomen.* I hope this will serve to "balance"
my relationship with both gentes and, for the record,
make note that I am aware and proud of where I came
from.
-Helena Cornelia Ovidia Equitia

Salvete,
This may be jumping the gun, letting the cat out of the bag, but. . .
the coincidence is a little too much for me.
To introduce myself a little: I'm the Ductor of the USC Latin Classics
Club, and a new (pending Nomenclator approval) citizen of Rome. As a club,
we've been researching the Ludi and Munera and have been constructing legit,
non-lethal traditional Roman gladiator equipment for the purposes of a
costumed exhibitional competition which will be taking place on the 27th or
28th.
We plan to fight 8 matched pairs "to the death", with Thraex, Myrmillo,
and Hoplomachus-style gladiators competing, and a few other surprises thrown
in that we're working on.
Training has already been going on for a few weeks, and the results are
quite exciting. (I'm a fan of the small-shield men myself)
Tonight (Friday 14th) is our third Ludus day, and I'll take some
pictures of our training. You can catch the scans online by Monday at
www.geocities.com/sclcc/ note that our weapons are currently unpainted, and
we do not practice in full costume.
If a munus is appropriate for this festival (and hell - old Romans held
them at the drop of a hat), we would be proud to consecrate our event to
Flora. (With a little direction from you as to how to do it correctly).
This is also a request for any tips from re-enactors or munera
enthusiasts. Anything you have to say, or ask is really appreciated.
Valete,

Salve!
This is for our new members in the California Province and elsewhere in Nova
Roma. There will be a gathering in San Gabriel, CA on April 22. We have some
civies confirmed. But, due to the increased numbers of citizens in California
in the past few weeks. I thought it would be a great idea to drop a note off to
the Nova Roma Main list. Hopefully our Senior Consul might make an appearance.
:) I will definately be there, as will Helena (who is organizing the event).
Other citizens have confirmed either on the California website or to Helena
already. If you would like any additional information regarding this event,
please e-mail me and I have the directions to Bella Italia (the place where we
are meeting) and the time.

When I was Curule Aedile I used to hold public games where I reported on the
fights between gladiators discribing the action. attached is one discription.
I also did one chariot race, but that is hard, because you have 6 chariots
to keep track of.

<BR>
AntoniusGryllusGraecus will now translate...<BR>
Hail Citizensl!<BR>
Today, April 14th the Roman Games begin.<BR>
I, Antonius Gryllus Graecus, Aedilis Plebis elected for the year 2051 AUC, start these Roman Games in honour of Goddess Ceres. <BR>
<BR>
Most honourable citizen Quintus Fabius Maximus selected the gladiators.<BR>
The Editor of the Games was the one who decided their fate.<BR>
<BR>
And in Nova Roma this rule applies. As such, I shall decide the fate of surrendered gladiators.<BR>
<BR>
Before the Games begin, lets pray to Ceres<BR>
<BR>
AntoniusGryllusGraecus covers his head... <BR>
Hail Ceres!<BR>
Mother of the Gods,<BR>
Mother of the Romans,<BR>
Accept these Games,<BR>
Accept the blood of the gladiators as our sacrifice<BR>
Give plentyness to the Roman People!<BR>
And hear their prayers..<BR>
It's done<BR>
It's done<BR>
Ut Ludi Romani incipiantur! Let the Roman Games begin!!!!!<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
Flavis (Flav) is moving right to left on your computer screen. Flav has beautiful silver triple crested helmet with lattice work mesh. He's wearing a blue loin cloth with silver threads.<BR>
<BR>
Acco (Acc) is wearing a bronze bucket with eye and air holes. He has a double crested helmet with white egret feathers. He's wearing a green loin cloth, with golden trim.<BR>
<BR>
Arena is in good shape for today's bout. Lovely white sand raked into mini furrows. I've got to say the grounds crew has done themselves proud today.<BR>
<BR>
Wait, the fighters are approaching the Editor's dais. There's the salute, and there is the traditional chant 'We who are about to die salute you!' <BR>
<BR>
AntoniusGryllusGraecus stands...gestures... <BR>
<BR>
We are ready to start. Both secutors salute each other, assume stances. They are just awaiting the signal. <BR>
<BR>
AntoniusGryllusGraecus drops his arm... <BR>
<BR>
There it is, and we are underway!<BR>
<BR>
Acc throws a cut which misses, backs up. <BR>
<BR>
Flav is just standing there. This does not bode well for Acc, but we'll see. <BR>
<BR>
Acc moves forward, there's an overhead strike in the tradition of his people. <BR>
<BR>
Flav, catches it on the edge of the scutum. Thrusts back. <BR>
<BR>
Ohh that was close, Acc just got out of the way. Had that landed this fight would have been over.<BR>
<BR>
Flav seems to be content to just wait out Acc. Acc who looks stronger maybe exerting too much strength early. <BR>
<BR>
Acc braces himself, looks like a rush is coming, no it was a feint, <BR>
<BR>
There's a strike to Flav's right. Flav parries it with sword. <BR>
<BR>
There's a shield swipe! Ohh that shocked Flav, he's backing up!<BR>
<BR>
Acc wins points on that one. Acc 1 Flav 0<BR>
<BR>
OK, now Acc is moving towards Flav, Flav is in a low crouch, spins slightly feints a slash towards the limbs and cuts for the head. <BR>
<BR>
Strike! Acc is backing up. <BR>
<BR>
No blood, but a feather is gone and the helm is dented. I can see that from here.<BR>
<BR>
Flav 1 Acc 1<BR>
<BR>
And both fighters seemed to pick up the pace now, there's a slash from Flav, blocked by Acc.<BR>
<BR>
Acc overhead strike is blocked by Flavs shield. Acc shield pushes Flav away by sheer strength.<BR>
<BR>
Flav is moving again, here he comes! <BR>
<BR>
Another shield swipe!! Flav is down! Could this be it? <BR>
<BR>
No! he twists away from Acc slashes! He's up again! Flav is fast. Sheer speed just saved his life.<BR>
<BR>
Acc 2 Flav 1<BR>
<BR>
Flav has rethought his strategy. <BR>
<BR>
He was doing better when Acc was attacking. Looks like he's reverting to that.<BR>
<BR>
Acc is doing a shield rush!! It misses! <BR>
<BR>
Flav slashes as Acc goes past! <BR>
<BR>
Strike! No! Acc's armor turns the blow. <BR>
<BR>
Both fighters have exchanged positions.<BR>
<BR>
Acc steps in and throws another overhead stroke! He is trying to beat Flav down like a post!! <BR>
Another! <BR>
Another! Flav slashes at the left leg in desperation! <BR>
<BR>
Strike! <BR>
Upper thigh! <BR>
There is blood! Habet!! First blood goes to Flav.<BR>
Flav 3 Acc 2<BR>
<BR>
Acc backs up. Not a major wound through. A shallow cut. <BR>
<BR>
It is bleeding badly though. Acc's whole leg looks washed in red. <BR>
<BR>
Here comes Flav. Looks like he wants to finish it. Thrusts! <BR>
Acc's shield is up! Just turns it!<BR>
Here comes Flav. Thrusts! <BR>
Acc's shield turns it!<BR>
Flav. Thrusts! <BR>
Acc's shield is up! Blocks the blow, throws a backslash! <BR>
That's a Strike! <BR>
Right Wrist! Ow! That had to hurt! <BR>
Flav shakes in pain. Blood to Acc! <BR>
Flav 3 Acc 4.<BR>
<BR>
Flav may be losing this one. Hard to thrust with a split wrist. <BR>
Yes there goes any thrust chances. He's changed the grip on the sword. <BR>
<BR>
OK here comes Acc. He looks confident. I think this is it. <BR>
There is one overhead stroke! Blocked! <BR>
Another! <BR>
Blocked! <BR>
Another! <BR>
Blocked! <BR>
<BR>
Flav can only block, he can't attack. <BR>
Another! <BR>
Bloc.. No! it was feint! Cut to the kneecap! Flav drops his shield.. <BR>
<BR>
But not in time! Strike! Blood everywhere! <BR>
That's it. It is over. We'll wait for the appeal. <BR>
Final scoring. Acc 6 Flav 3.<BR>
<BR>
Acc stands over Flav. He removes Flav's helm. He makes the appeal. <BR>
'How say you, Editor?'<BR>
AntoniusGryllusGraecus stands up calmly<BR>
'Flavis the Samnite You have lost.'<BR>
'But you have proved your valor fighting to your limit.'<BR>
'Ceres is a merciful Goddess...'<BR>
'Your life is spared!'<BR>
Acco takes off his helm and gestures to the crowd. His hair is covered with sweat, and his mustaches are plastered to his cheeks. He is still goodlooking.<BR>
<BR>
Litter bearers are placing Flavis onto a stretcher. <BR>
He is removed from the sand, and leaves through the Gate of Life. <BR>
AntoniusGryllusGraecus stands: <BR>
'I declare this day's of games are closed.<BR>
<BR>
Thank you for coming. <BR>
Ladies and Gentlemen. please appreciate our Players<BR>
Robert Haverland as Flavis. Rob Goodwin as Acco<BR>
Carol Bundt was the typist, and of course me Q. Fabius, judge and narrator.<BR>
Thank you for coming. Good night <BR>

Salvete omnes
I've just become a new citizen, so I thought I should introduce myself.
I reside in Australia. I dont know whether there's a provincial name, if not, can I suggest Terra Australis Incognita? It has historical veracity, being what Australia was known as before Europeans were really sure it was there at all.
I'm a student of Classics and Archaeology. Currently I'm working as a volunteer in the local museum, where my project at the moment is to research and classify a collection of Roman pottery sherds from Britain and Syria circa Late Imperial period. Its difficult and time-consuming, but great fun! Lack of information is the biggest hurdle. It seems Roman pottery takes a back seat to Greek vases in the publishing stakes (My university library would have 10 books on Greek pottery to every one on Roman). Still, it makes for a challenge!
I look forward to communicating on the list and hope I can be a worthwhile citizen of Nova Roma

I would like to suscribe to the Eagle, but I read that subscription
is for U.S.A. and Europe. According to this, I wouldn't be able to
suscribe because I'm from South America, Am I right ?
