Salve,
I'm French and may have some time to help you in your translation. Do not
hesitate to e-mail me the parts you want to translate which are not
completed yet.

Salve, Gaius Lupinius Festus;

My dear sir, I should be most happy to "start over on the right foot."
I have for some time admired your comments on philosophy and literature,
and have read your posts with interest. Your apologies have assured me
that you are sincere in your thoughts and your assurances to consider
others more fully in the future, puts me easy in my mind.

Therefore, I extend to your my "virtual" hand in friendship and wipe
away with the cloth of "Gravitas" our differences of the last few weeks.
I, in turn, apolgize for any comments which I may have made in haste,
which you may have found intrusive.

Your ideas regarding the Eagle fall right in with Palladius, Cassius and
myself, all of whom have labored to bring the Eagle up to the level of a
first-line publication as well as a house organ. Our first editor, who
is unfortunately no longer with us, provided a very high mark to aim at,
and we continue by dint of consistant effort, contribution, and
encouragement to maintain that standard.

I like your idea about contacting the author of the book that you
mentioned and inviting her to Roman Days. However, before taking that
action I want to contact Mathew Amt (Commander of the Legio XX) whose
event "Roman Day's" really is and ask his agreement. I would also like
to have a "show of hands" from the NR people who will be able to attend
"Roman Days" this year, in order to inform the lady of a potential group
of people to greet her. Additionally, I would like to come to some sort
of accomodation with the host site for a place for the lady to set-up,
and perhaps offer her book for sale, speak with interested people about
the book, and perhaps even give a short talk about the book and her
wriing of it.

If you agree to these ideas, those of you who have contacted me
regarding such, please let me know and I will immediately undertake
getting in touch with Commander Amt, the Host Organization and the
Author. Meanwhile, I welcome you, Gaius Lupinius Festus, to Nova Roma,
in a belated greeting, and hope that you will be able to find something
here among us, of interest and purpose in your life.

My apologies in not getting back to you immediately, and to those who
have also contacted me over this long weekend. As most of you know, I
am a re-enactor and this last week-end was a special re-enactment
celebrating the march of some 400+ colonists, under the command of
Isreal Putnam, from the Brooklyn / Thompson area of Connecticut to the
Revolutionary Forces surrounding Boston. This march commemorated by a
group of 45+ re-enactors consisting of approx. some 16 re-established
Revolutionary War Mlitary Units consisted of a 17 mile march from
Lebannon to Thompson on Saturday, camp overnight on Thompson Town Green,
and march 7 miles on Sunday from Thompson to the Massachusetts state
line. Since my recent operation forbid my marching with the group, I
was asked to take command of the Ceremonial Corps who performed musket
firing ceremonies at 12 sites over the weekend commemorating fallen
soldiers and the rededication of the march, and some other
organizations. While this is somewhat off-topic, I thought that those
who are awaiting my answer to various posts should at least have an
explanation.

Vale, Very Respectfully;
Marcus Audens

Salvete Omnes

Here is an interesting site I've found, wandering around on the web.
It is a map and model of the ancient city of Rome, at the University of Caen
in France. You can zoom on key sites.

Hi all,
I am very sad to see Dex leave this list. He has spirit.

Please remove my name from the list of citizens of Nova Romans.

If possible, I would like to stay subscibed to the email lists, even
though I rarely participate in conversations these days. I am
currently set as "read off the web" because I am spending very little
time on the internet these days, but I'd still like to keep in touch.

Sincerely,
Diana Aventina

Salve, Honored Senator;

I am most pleased to find that I was correct in my estimate of your
meaning of the subject term. I also wish to thank you for pointing out
the difference in our ages. It gives me an infinately satisfactory
feeling to afirm that I have some advantage (age) over you, since your
qualifications in other areas are so daunting!!! (Grinnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!)
It is always good to share a joke with you, and I hope that you are
holding up well.

Salvete omnes:

Not having been paid recently -- ergo, having currently no money to blow on
yet more lovely books :) -- I'm wondering if the citizens on this list can
define for me when one should be capite velato. Capite velato is a
specifically Roman thing, as far as I can tell -- neither the Greeks nor the
Celts seem to have done it.

I notice that one need not be capite velato in the performance of the daily
lararium rite, but in the rites for the Kalends, Nones, and Ides, it is
required.

I had *thought*, therefore, that for rituals involving the major deities, or
public rituals, that capite velato is required, but not for rites involving
only the Lares and Di Penates.

Then I read that various emperors had such gods as Iuppiter as "Di Penates,"
and therefore concluded that, besides the "small gods" of the storerooms,
"Di Penates" means "hearth-gods" and by extension the tutelary deity/deities
of the familia or gens are included.

So, if I'm doing a private rite for, e.g. Iuppiter as a "Deus Penatis" (?)
of my familia/gens, should I be capite velato or not?

Subject: A Question of Confusion
From:

Salve Great and Noble Romans,

I recently suffered of a great personal tragedy. I'm not sure exactly how to
place it into words, but I would like your guidance. I definitely feel that
I need some sort of religious comfort. I was raised a Christian - Methodist,
when I was very very young I attended Sunday school at the United Methodist
Church in Snellville, GA. Although my family and I never actually attended
service there. I still celebrate all of the Christian holidays, but I have
never even read the bible. Since the past few years I have started to feel a
stronger connection with the ancient Roman religion, especially since I have
joined Nova Roma. I've never really practiced the religio Romana, except
possibly the yearly celebration for the Nepunalia consisting of 100 drunken
and raving lunatics in a park somewhere. Help?

Lost,
