Subject: [novaroma] ATTN (Religio Romana): Idus Iunii (June 13th)

Salvete omnes

This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.

The Idus of every month are sacred to Iuppiter. An white ewe is
sacrificed to Iuppiter by the Flamen Dialis.

Today is the first day of the "Minor Quinquatrus" (the "Maior Quinquatrus"
being held on 19-23 Martius), the lesser Festival of Minerva. This festival
is mainly celebrated by the 'tibicines' (flute-players who play at religious
occasions to drown out any ill-omened noises). For three days they wander
the city in masks and festive clothing, making music and livening up
everyday business. Minerva, who is the patron Goddess of the tibicines.
Each year the guild of 'tibicines' meet at the temple of Minerva and then go
to the temple of Iuppiter for a feast near the shrine of the Minerva.

Pax Deorum vobiscum

Antonius Gryllus Graecus
Pontifex

Lucius Equitius has provided an excellent account of our activities,
so I will not burden you further, except to offer my thanks to the
Legionaries and Citizens who attended, and most especially to
Merlinia Ambrosia Artori.

Merlinia, who has long experience in cooking for crowds through her
involvement with the Society for Creative Anachronism, and
her "slave" Fiona both toiled long and hard to provide us with
delicious tastes of ancient Rome. I hope she will consent to grace us
with recipes and information on her work, which is so beneficial to
the participants in this event.

Subject: [novaroma] Roman bumper stickers
From: "pjane@-------- " <pjane@-------->
Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 22:20:47 -0000
The Nova Roma bumper stickers are now available!

If you missed the first announcement, the design is online at
http://www.egroups.com/novaroma/files/smallsticker.gif

These are an attractive way to let the world know about your interest
in ancient Rome. A Nova Roma bumper sticker adds class(ics) to your
vehicle, motorcycle helmet, notebook or other flat surface.

They're $1 apiece, or outfit your Gens or Legion at six for $5. Add
50 cents for postage and handling if ordering by mail. You can get
them from the main NR postal address (P.O. Box 1897, Wells, ME 04090).

A portion of the proceeds will go to the Nova Roma Treasury. The
remainder will be set in reserve for a Nova Britannia gathering in
the fall. Speaking of which, if you hope to attend this gathering,
please let me know. I don't want to put a lot of effort into planning
a fun and informative weekend until I have some idea that people will
come to it...
