Salvete Quirites
Mille Gazia M. Attilius Regulus
Posted to the message board by Attilius Regulus is a list of books he has
recommended related to Archaic Italy and the founding of Rome.
Regule has also spoken with me in the Forum about a very important recent
find on the Palatine of a wall predating Rome. The stone wall is laid
directly on the earth without footers. This precludes the wall of being of
Roman construction, and also of the possibility that it was meant as a
defensive structure. I gather from what else Regule said that it far too
small to be considered part of a building. What that means is the likely
possibility of a pomerium. A pomerium is a sacred area divdied out from the
rest of an area by a low enclosure wall. If this is true then what has been
found is the earliest known sacred structure on the Palatine Hill.
In other parts of Italy there have been found the various inscriptions
written in Umbro-Oscan that refer to similar pomeria. One of Regule's
recommended books is on the Iguvinian Table which relates a sacrifice to
Jupiter. The Cippus Abellanus, erected in 183 bce, designates an arbitration
settlement made by a Roman magistrate between two Samnite cities, Abellanus
and Nuvlans (Nola), with reference to a pomerium Sanctuary to Hercules. The
third inscription is the Agnone Table that indicates the various ritual sites
inside a pomerium designated as the "Garden of Ceres." A Palatine pomerium,
relative to these other sites, designates the Italic portion of the origin of
the religio romana.
I have not found any information on this pomerium available as of yet.
Regule is looking to provide more information. If anyone, however, is
interested in the period we are considering here, you might try <A
HREF="http://www.shef.ac.uk/~assem/4/">assemblage, no. 4</A> . In different
parts of Lazio the transition from the Iron Age culture of the Villanovans is
either abrupt or transitional. In the area of northern Lazio and Rome the
transition was abrupt, taking place about the time of the founding of the
Republic. But in the more southerly region of the Lepine foothills, on which
this website has an article, there is found more of a continuity extending
into a much later period.

Salvete Omnes:
I just wanted to post to tell everyone what a wonderful time I had at Roman
Days. It was a very positive, inspiring weekend...I really connected with
what I shall call "My Roman Roots".
I have always had an unexplained affinity to Roman culture, history,
military, literature and various philosophies since I was a kid. I am very
gratified to be able to share these things with others of like mind.
The displays, artifacts, fashions, armour, weaponry etc. were
"out of this world"....no pun intended!!!
Meeting other Nova Romani in person was a real treat, as was visiting with
the members of the three Legios in attendance. I am going to save my
denarii for next year's Roman Days.
I took a few pictures (72!). Senator Cincinnatus was the only person who
seemingly knew how to open the latch of my camera to change the film (it was
sticking)..so he kept the thing loaded with fresh film for me. Thanks,
Senator.
I would like to thank Merlinia Ambrosia, Patricia Cassia and Pontifex Marcus
Cassius, for providing me with transportation to and from the site, and to
the Metro. I felt so welcome. We met Sunday night for a great Chinese
buffet at a restaurant in Lanham, Maryland- (thanks, Pontifex Cassius!).
We shared a drop of Falernian wine afterward at the hotel. Monday we met
for breakfast before we went our separate ways.
Merlinia's Roman cuisine was succulent...she is the most organized person in
the world, I think!
All in all, a Magnus experience......I encourage you to take it
in...especially if you are reasonably close to Maryland.
Valete,
Pompeia Cornelia Strabo

Salve,
In order to get to the files in Egroups, you first have to "log in" by giving
them your *full* Email address and your password (the one you had to give
them to get onto the list in the first place!). Perhaps not the most
convenient system, but it works.
Hopefully we'll soon have a website page up about the stickers, in the

I just uploaded unofficial Latin translations of three Senatus consulta to
the Latinitas e-mail list's file area. If nothing else, they are samples of
work in Latin composition. I invite Nova Romans who enjoy conversing and/or
writing in Latin to sign up to that list and consider joining the Sodalitas
Latinitatis, which we hope to have up and running within a month or so,
pending approval of the Senate of Nova Roma.
I understand that the official, English versions of the Sentus consulta will
be posted in the Tabularium within the next few days.

Part of what we are seeking to do with the Sodalitas Latinitatis is provide
free, online courses in the name of Nova Roma to anyone and everyone who is
interested. But, it is going to be at least a couple of months (probably
more) before even the simplest lesson is ready -- we aren't even approved by
the Senate yet. I hope that you'll still be interested when we do get our
act together.
In the meantime, if you're anxious enough to get started that you wouldn't
mind paying a fee, another civis, M Papirius Iustus, has an online course.
You can check that out at
http://web.idirect.com/~atrium/learnlatin/learnlatin.html
I studied Latin in a brick-and-mortar school :) and unfortunately can't
attest to the quality of Iustus' or anyone else's online courses.
Whatever you decide to do, you should consider subscribing to
latinitas@-------- You'll be able to get help and "ad hoc tutoring" of
sorts from a variety of people who are either studying, like you, or are
advanced enough in the language to teach it, or in between.

I will look into this also.
I would really like to get back into Latin so
that I can use it more often with this group. It
would also help while doing research!

Simply because one of the authors is a friend, I have read "Latin for
People" by Nicholas and Alexander Humez, and recommend it for its
combination of real learning and a lighthearted approach. You won't
be fully fluent at the end of it, but you'll understand the basics of
the language and how it works. Plus you'll know a couple of
good "bear-walked-into-a-bar" jokes in Latin...

Quiritibus salutem

This is exciting indeed! My thanks to Piscinus and Regulus for making this
known. Some immediate questions arise in my mind:
i. What shape is it?
ii. Can the original height be inferred from the width of the remains?
<AMPUTATIO>
>A Palatine pomerium,

of

Two more questions:
iii. Could this be the very wall built by Romulus Quirinus, which Remus
leaped over (and died as a result of this demonstration of contempt)? Could
his death have been a case of capital punishment for sacrilege? (to borrow
Schliemann's 'face of Agamemnon' idiom).
iv. Have any contemporary artefacts or deposits been discovered within the
pomerium?

Agite! :-D

Excellent site. Thank you.
The Cippus Abellanus inscription, and the adjudication it records, brings to
mind the hypothesis made by Martin Henig, Miranda Green and others that in
Gaul and Britain major (pre-Roman)temple sites, presumably of tribal
significance, tended to straddle political/territorial boundaries, often on
roads (which, like temenoi/pomeria, defined
boundaries/ingress/egress/between different 'worlds' and were, ipso facto,
sacrosanct).
Vah!
Vado.
