Salvete,

I'm throwing around the idea of creating a Nova Roma National Library, not
like the Camenaeum on the website, but an actual physical library all about
Ancient Rome. It would be a way to help students and officials research and
study. It could be a focal point to choose and send books to Universities in
each provincia as a charity. Of course access to the library itself would
have to be restricted to citizens and only for a set of designated legitimate
reasons (especially because anyone checking out a book would have to send
shipping cost, wait for the book to arrive, and then send the book back).
The reasons probably should be along the lines of Students researching for
school. Anyway, I'm putting this out for open discussion. I have a number
of titles that I could use immediently to start a Nova Roma National Library,
listed below, but I would definitely need to add MANY more titles to really
create a good library for Nova Roma.

Salvete!

When I joined Nova Roma in October of last year, I was eager for Her
future. I saw great things ahead for Nova Roma, and I wanted to be a part of
that. I was ecstatic when I was accepted into the Patrician gens Cornelia
(which I've since found out is not quite the accomplishment I'd originally
assumed), and, because of the enthusiasm I showed, I was given the position
of Assensis by the Consul Quintus Fabius Maximus and the position of Legatus
by the then Propraerix of California Helena Cornelia Ovidia Equitia. During
the next few months I involved myself in the day to day goings-on of Nova
Roma, taking part in Her debates and conversations, and voting in the
elections. I found myself so in love with Nova Roma that I recruited three
new people into the micronation and into the gens Cornelia.
I was truly happy in Nova Roma until personal differences with members of
my gens made life in Nova Roma uncomfortable. So I, along with four others
from the gens Cornelia, attempted to make a break and get off to a clean
start in a new gens. This caused, as I'm sure you remember, quite an uproar
(including personal attacks directed at myself on this public forum).
I chose, however, to stick with Nova Roma and with the gens Cornelia.
But since then all I see in Nova Roma is personal problems affecting public
policy, petty political bickering, and constant power plays (power over what,
though, I'm not sure of) by the members of our government.
I can not stand to be a citizen of a nation whose Senate considers itself
more important than its populous. A nation through which people use their
authority as a means of attacking with impunity that which they are unable to
understand. So I, Drusus Cornelius Claudius, hereby resign my citizenship in
Nova Roma. I wish only the best for Nova Roma and Her populous in the
future; but I beg Her citizenry to stand up and let your voices be heard!

Ok... look. I'm going to say this right out right in the public forum. I am
going to delete any posts have "Green is the Colour" as part of the subject
line... I am part of a very large pagan community and have been witness to
the Witchy version of politics, cutely named Witch Wars. And I'm sick of
them!!!! Petty squabbles over CRAP! From BOTH sides... no matter WHO was
wrong. People begin to blame a person and then it becomes the person's
position or they begin to be blamed for doing one job poorly because they
had a disagreement on a totally personal level... I'm sorry. I do NOT want
to have to WASTE time reading about petty moaning and groaning on an open
forum list, ESPECIALLY when they become political attacks. I'm QUITE sure
I'm going to get alot of booing and hissing from this, but I felt it needed
to be said. I WILL NOT READ PETTY BICKERING and would hope that all of you
think before hitting the send button to see exactly what you wrote... it'd
save me time in hitting the delete button... Thank you... *goes back to

Slavete, Omnes;

I have just recieved communication this morning from members / former
members of Nova Roma who are apparently suffering from frustrations so
severe that the description of thier problems are reduced to vague
complaints and the use of gutter language on this "Onelist" to express
their thoughts and ideas. While I am very sorry that some of you are
irritated, frustrated, upset and angry, I do not believe it to be
necessary to resort to this kind of language. Whoever your anger and
frustration is directed against, you do yourselves no good in expressng
yourself in this way, as it simply reflects your own inadequacies and
hurts the very organization that you claim affection for in long-term
ways which in view of your terminology and approach--you do not have a
clue about.

Secondarily, in your anger and frustration you have made general and
therefore meaningless accusations against the government of Nova Roma
for which, in large part, I am currently responsible, in harness with my
colleague Magistrates. Your comments are all negative, but with no
specifics, you are talking about ideas and occurances on the Onelist
which I have no direct knowledge of even though I monitor this list
faithfully as part of my Consular Tasks, and none of you to my knowledge
have made any attempt to take positive steps to improve the situations
about and for which you so bitterly accuse the government of it's
massive shortcomings.

My friends, government is not your mother who caters to your every whim.
Government must be driven and must be controlled and must as a result
grind slow but exceedingly fine. Your views while important, are but a
small part of this process as a whole, and our government is dedicated
to the principles of recognition of the majority, protection of the
rights of the minority, and an open forum to all.

However, I do not believe that an "open forum" extends to slinging mud
simply to dirty the walls of Nova Roma. No-one who has a problem and
who has contacted me has ever gone away with a totally empty hand, and
those whom I can help I will--even my many detractors must admit that.

But , my friends, those of you who whine and groan about the awful
government, the cruel oppression of the Magistrates, the stupidity and
unresponsiveness of the Senate, and the lack of overall direction in
"your very general terms" so that you may not have to reveal how very
little you really know, I ask----where is your rational and significant
input, where are your ideas archived carefully in the Consular Idea
archives which I recieve a report of monthly. where are your
applications for Sodalitas, your application for Senatus Consultas, or
your application to run for office in order to change this awful
place--Why my friends -- in asking my Scriba to carefully check my files
I find nothing from your hands--Nothing except general accusations about
a government that I work very hard to maintain and improve along with my
colleagues.

When you insult the government in general terms and with language better
utililized in a brothel rather than among educated men and women, you
do several things. You shout to the world your inability to communicate
in an acceptable way, you indicate an inability to pinpoint your wishes
and take reasonable action to change or modify the circumstances in
which you find yourself, you insult the hard-working Magistrates who
labor in the halls of govrnment day by day, you insult both my and my
Consular Colleague's efforts to bring to Nova Roma a lasting, stable and
responsive government, and lastly and of far less importance you insult
me. You do all this without the least glimmer of how I can help you,
what I have done to deserve such insults, nor the proviso of any ideas
to me of what I may do to relieve your frustration.

My friends, in any time, in any place, and in any culture of which I am
aware, that is a greedy, thoughtless, unfair and an insulting approach,
and I think it far beneath the behavior expected of a member of Nova
Roma to whom you have pledged your support.

Valete, Respectfully;
Marcus Audens

Salve,

I believe this was only a figure of speech. If you've heard the CD of "Roman"
music by Synaulia, you're immediately struck by the fact that most of the
cuts aren't tunes at all, but rather almost random musical notes to a beat.
The reason for this? The folks from Synaulia didn't know any Roman tunes, but
DID want to reproduce Roman instruments... so they do it in a fairly
disorganized way. By doing this you can hear what ancient instruments
*sounded* like, without their having to make any claim about having
reconstructed ancient music.

I've heard a great deal of early music. Ancient Greek tunes, a couple of
tunes written for the Emperor Hadrian, and even some very early Medieval
stuff (9th and 10th century as opposed to popular Renaissance music). All of
it had some sort of discernable tune. There's something in there you can
whistle... it's not just random notation and trills on a flute.

Superstitious the Romans may have been. They may not have stomped their feet
to music. (Interesting bit there, I've not heard it before, btw!) But, they
WERE practical people, and would almost assuredly prefer a solid tune to
musical notes so random that they're less repeatable than complex Modern
Jazz. Ancient music in general is understandable enough so that it can be
sung, played on a simple flute, etc... so that people in everyday life may
have music without benefit of hearing it only from professional
musicians/recordings.

Whew! All that being said, the Synaulia CD is worth buying. There are two
songs that sound rather like background music in a Temple... the stuff that
musicians would have played in the background to cover any mistake in the
ritual itself.

Valete,

Salve Correus Appius,

I hope you do not judge us to harshly for the action of so few. On this, the
main list, there are only two types of discussions. The first, which many
wish was the only topic, is the sharing and discussing of new information
about Ancient Rome. The sharing of information has brought many of us Nova
Romans much closer together. However the other topic is politics within Nova
Roma. The introduction of new politics, usually from the creation or
possible creation of a new law, has often started political debates. The
political debates are nothing more than political debates, they clearly show
our right to critize, discuss, and suggest ideas about the Nova Roma
Government. Unfortunately some citizens of Nova Roma become distressed by
specific political discussions. I urge you and other citizens to, in the
future, to take these debates with a grain of salt. No matter how heated
these debates become, they never go beyond debates, they do not show defiance
of citizens towards the government. After all it is our right to critize,
dicuss, and suggest ideas... but that is not disrespecting the authority of
the government. I hope you find Nova Roma enlightening.

Vale in pace,
Iulius Titinius

Correus Appius Iulianus to Iulius Titinius -
Salve

> I hope you do not judge us to harshly for the
> action of so few. >>

I shall not do this. I just thought some should
be made aware of the light that is being shown on
Nova Roma. Had I not taken it upon myself to
learn all I can about this truly spectacular
community, these e-mails might have turned me off
with the thought - "just ANOTHER group who do
nothing but squabble instead of work together for
the benefit of all and not just the few". What
is being done within this community is nothing
more than magnanimous! It is one thing to debate
and discuss in a polite way, but to let it fall
to such debaseness is another.

Perhaps the Roman virtue of honor should be
looked at in more depth. I would, for one, NEVER
disgrace a member of my familia, the government,
patron, or even client or slave by lowering my
self to public insults! To me it chips away at
ones dignitas.

Petty insults, slurs, and fights will inevitably
happen, but do it in the old fashion way and keep
it in the familia. If you must fight in this way
- send private e-mails. This type of squabbling
(other than true debate and discussion) can be a
cancer to our noble community and do nothing but
destroy.

> I urge you and
> other citizens to, in the
> future, to take these debates with a grain of
> salt. >>

I do, but it saddens me to see people stoop to
such lowness when name calling and personal
attacks (all in public) take place.

> I hope you find Nova Roma
> enlightening. >>

So far I have and hope to in the future. I also
hope to become an active, viable member who will
be able to share and learn much.

Vale

Salve Correus Appius et welcome to Nova Roma

Nova Roma is a re-creation of a somewhat mish-mashed version of Roma
Antiqua. As such, it includes many of the warts of Roma A., including
nasty political squabbles and demagoguery. At least it hasn't included
the riots, murders, and political pogroms of ancient Rome.

The previous poster's remarks don't appear responsive to anything I've
seen here in the Forum for at least a couple of weeks, so I'm not clear
on what his distress was all about. I think anyone who's been here a
while will agree that if he came here to find a place where everyone is
pure of heart and intelligent and ethical and dedicated to love, peace,
and understanding, then he came to the wrong place. This is real life.
There are arguments, there are bitter debates, there are hurt feelings --
i.e., there are humans, which, as you may know, are notorious for the way
they behave when they get together in groups.

There is also a lot of good here, and even a lot of good humans. Like the
rest of life, you have to be prepared to see the good and the bad, else
you'll probably be leaving in disgust, too.

I don't know how people with such thin skins as that cope with life. I
guess they leave lots of places. I wonder where they wind up.

If you decide to stay, again, welcome! We hope you'll contribute more to
the good than to the bad.

Hallo, Mr. O´Neill.

When I take a look on your email, I think your project will be an
interesting one. I´m glad that you want to make your movie historically
accurate. I hope also that this is meant also for the appearance of the
roman soldiers.

The Website of the University of Osnabrück (my fellow citizen metioned it)
is also highly recommended by me. I also recommend the study of Marcus
Junkelmanns book "Die Legionen des Augustus". There the numbers of the
legions, which were wiped out, are listened. Also you can get an idea how
the roman legionary looked like.

Please feel free to mail me directly, if you have further questions.

--- You know I'm very open minded pagan witch, myself and definitely
no stranger to the Witch Wars. But before you say we're all bickering
about one person's post maybe you should read what we're posting
before you point the finger. There are alot of us here who are
already tired constant bickering that goes on here on a natural day
to day basis, who really don't want to add fuel to the fire.

Salvete Nova Romani:

I am pleased to inform you that the Outreach Sodalitas of Nova Roma was
approved recently by the Senate, and was officially established June 14.

All civites in good standing of Nova Roma are invited and encouraged to join
us.

The mission of Sodalitas Egressus is to

.....dedicate itself to the promotion of Nova Roma worldwide in friendship
to classical historical societies and other associations dedicated to
the culture and history of Ancient Rome

.....dedicate itself to the promotion, publicizing of events at
which Nova Romani may personally associate with members of other
organizations with a love of "All Things Roman".

.....dedicate itself to the promotion of opportunities for growth and
appreciation of the culture, history and spiritualities of Ancient
Rome.

Our complete Senatus Consultum, including just how we propose to do this may
be viewed at http://www.novaroma.org/tabularium/sen00140601.htm

If we all work together toward these objectives in some small way, in the
area in which we live, Nova Roma will soon be a well known and respected
Republic, whose civites enjoy more person-to-person contact with each other,
as well as with members of other like-minded groups.

If this venture interests you, we welcome your ideas and participation.
Please provide us the following info and send it to
