"Salve omnes
With the forewords that I'm asking for the kind collaboration in
translating my posts; I can write only in italian to avoid
misunderstandings and translation problems.
Anyway, in english, you'll meet me online togheter with my friend Piscinus
at 2:00 pm CET (Greenwich +1) where I'll be glad to debate with you on the
themes of interest for the NR's cives.
Now, "paters et coscripti" is not an original idea of mine but I originate
it from the thesis of prof. Arnaldo Momigliano (The origins of Rome ,in
Cambridge Ancient History, VII ,second edition); Momigliano is maybe the
greatest rapresentant of that school trying to make compatible tradition
and modern historical critic.
I believe, togheter with prof. Massimo Pallottino, famous etruscologist,
that he offered a acceptable framework for the ones living the history of
Rome as a faith rather than a scientific discipline
Patres Conscripti is an attributive form for Senators; Patres ET conscrptu
is way different: it shows a division in the senatorial body. While the
Patres are the patricians, who are the conscripti? Why it was necessary to
include some non patres senators in the senatorial assembly? When it was
statued? By whom?
The problem is, objectively, strictly tied to another one kind of duality:
populus plebeque- la plebs was part of the populus? Let's try to give a
plausible answer to this questions all togheter.
marcus Atilius greets you readfirming hei great esteem for your efforts
towards the history and civilization of my city, unique in the qorld, our
most beloved Urbs.

Salvete Piscine et Alii!
I had always believed in the theory which Diocletianus
repeated, that the Conscripti were conscripted ("written
into") the Senate as a result of the Plebian
political/constitutional successes. All of the most reliable
sources I have in my possession say this. However, in one
source recommended on the net by you, Piscinus, I find this
story:
Originally, the Roman Senate consisted of a group
of one hundred leading Roman citizens that served
as an advisory body to the king. The members of
the Senate were the patres, or fathers of the
important families and, by extension, the fathers
of their city. Later kings packed the Senate with
their own clients and followers. These men were
known as the conscripti or the enrolled ones, a
term with a somewhat negative
connotation. Later, the Senate as a whole came to
be known as the "Conscript Fathers", or, Patres
Conscripti. This was a title of respect and the
title by which those speaking to the Senate
addressed that governing body.
This does seem to push the use of the term back into the
regal period, but this source does not seem in general to be
carefully written, and I am not sure how much to believe in
it. Not far away it speaks of the "auctoritas" of the
consuls in a way that suggests it meant "imperium", for
example.
You wrote:
The phrase Patres et Conscripti dates back into
the regal period, some sources claim all the way
back to Romulus, but before the Republic, as laid
out by Ogilvie (Comm. 1965). It can not therefor
refer to the Plebians attaining rights in 330 bce,
nor in 493 bce.
I would appreciate it, Piscinus, if you could provide
concretely the ancient literary source(s) or inscription(s)
which has made scholars (or some of them) change their minds
since the time of all of my books and move the date of the
usage of the term back to the regal period. Although you
cited an authority, it would be difficult for most of us to
get hold of it. (And what does the no doubt standard
abbreviation "Comm." refer to?) (I am, by the way, aware
that in Zonaras (VII.9) it is claimed that Servius Tullius
had admitted some Plebeins into the senate, but I do not
have the source here to see if "conscripti" was the word
used.)
The points you have been raising are very interesting, and I
appreciate your links, although most seem to have more
pictures than interpretive text. The latter would probably
be useful to me at least, although some of the pictures are
beautiful and/or fascinating..
Speaking of "imperium" by the way, surely Domitianus was
incorrect of speaking of Censors having imperium? Their
powers of determining who was eligible for the Senate (not
to mention citizenship) were enormous, but I do not think it
was *imperium*. Who is right?
I look forward to hearing to more on this.

Salvete Omnes:
I was combing through my bookmarked sites on the Roman Navy, ancient
vessels, etc. and I thought I would share this link with you from the
University of Bangor, Wales, UK.
It contains some excellent information regarding ancient craft of Greece,
Rome, and the Brits.
They are in the process of adding drawings to the site to correspond with
the text.
The URL is <http://www.history.bangor.ac.uk/shipspecial/SHIP_int.htm>
I would also like to thank Senator C. Aelius Ericius for posting some
excellent sites last weekend on the Roman Navy and ancient sailing. They
will prove very useful for the Sodalitas Militarium. :)

Salvete omnes!
I'm on digest mode, so forgive me if someone has answered this one
already. When I was in Athens about two weeks ago I took pictures of the
reconstructed trireme called the "Olympias." They used Oregon pine in the
construction, believe it or not. It had a big apotropaic eye on it. Of
course, the triremes had to be beached every night. I also took a picture
there of a transport vessel which they've also reconstructed. This ship was
designed for long-term sea voyages, and it was of the type the Athenians
would have used around 300 B.C.E. I believe it's been tentatively called
the "Kyrinea."
You can see my picture of the Kyrinea (taken at a distance) at:

Salvete M. Apollonius Formosanus et alii
Thus far my humble efforts have only been to report on the
conversations I have been having with M. Attilius Regulus in the
Forum chatroom. Not a format conducive to runnig around gathering up
sources to back up one's comments. I myself am attempting to locate
the books of more recent authors which he has recommended. Just as
you mentioned, most of my books that even broach the subject are out
of date. Earlier I had posted to the egroups site a list of the
English translations of those books recommended by Regulus. The
other book to which I referred (not on the list I previously posted)
was R.M.Ogilvie <A Commentary on Livy 1-5> Oxford:1965.
As for the online sources I posted, well, they are admittedly
limited, but that's all I have been finding on the net thus far.
These sites were primarily meant for those interested in Archaic
Italy and who do not have a scholarly background in the field. That
would include myself. I am only sharing what I have thus far
discovered, and that has been unsatisfactory. All online sources I
have found so far, on any topic, have been rather disappointing. In
part because of the medium itself, and secondly because of who
prepares this material. I would not rely on any online commentary.
What I have found the net useful for, though, is in providing
pictures of objects and of places to which I am unable travel. These
provide the visual information to the interpretive texts I find
elsewhere. The other use it seems to have would be to provide copies
of ancient texts that might otherwise be unavailable. Now if only
someone would be so kind as to translate them. I have yet to find an
English version, even a poor translation, of Pliny the Elder.
Now that it seems we have a few people on the list who can better
understand Regulus than I, and can translate his comments, perhaps
the sources you seek will begin to appear. Or you might join us in
the forum chatroom, weekdays 13.00 Greenwich.

Caro Cives Domizio Costantino Fusco,

Salvete omnes,
This is my first posting to the Nova Roma list, and I apologize if someone
has written a reply like this one before me, but I get the mails in digest
form so please bare with me. Although I've only recently applied for
membership, and I'm also a recent member of the list, I must say that I
think that making people who are dissatisfied with Nova Roma leave silently
without a word is wrong. Of course heated arguments and emotional postings
won't help anyone further either, and perhaps it could be that some are
written with the intent to take a final attempt at getting some positive
input and possible ego-reenforcement, but I don't think that everyone who
is not pleased with the Nova Roma governement, or the way things work over
here, does such things only to become better of it himself. People who do
stupid things will be ignored after a while, which makes them all the more
pathetic, but if someone can give rational and clear air to his problems or
distress, let him or her do so instead of silencing all opposing elements.
Valete;

Dear Popillia Cassia,
I speak and I am Italian, so I hope
sometime to be able to help, but I have two limits:
1) TIME : It looks as here it would be needed to be instantly available,
which cannot be often my case.
2) The quality of my english arrives only up to a point and not further.
Vale.
