Salve

I did not know that you could not send attachments, but I also tried to use
paste on the final attempt, but still failure. I guess legioI(I Germanica)
wants to keep some things secret. I found out that I could successfully send
the email privately, so if any one would like to have this information from
"The Roman Legions" by H. M. D. Parker please feel free to send me an email.
It would appear Legio I(I Germanica) had a tough life.

Salve, QS;

You cannot send attachments to everyone on the Onelist. It is a
restriction that we have so as not to clog the Mailboxes of those who
have limited capacity.

Subject: [novaroma] Patres et conscripti
From: "Marcus Attilius Regulus " <m.morgantini@-------->

Salvete omnes!

truppe a disposizione dello Stato.

Salvete

As I will not be available tomorrow, I send today the religious note for
June 24th:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is one of the dies comitiales (C), when committees of citizens can vote
on political or criminal matters.

Today is the feast of Fors Fortuna, solemnizing the consecration of Her two
shrines on the western margin of the Tiber, one consecrated by Servius
Tullius (the traditional founder of the cult of Fate) and the other by
Carvilius Maximus. These are respectively on the 1st and 6th mile of the Via
Portuensis. As part of today's cellebration, boats adorned with flowers
descend the river Tiber and libations are offered to the Goddess.

I also remind that Iunius is the month of Iuno, month of the young
(iuuenes).

Pax Deorum vobiscum

Antonius Gryllus Graecus
Pontifex

Salve!

This list does not permit attachments, but does allow members to
upload photos and other files to a special "Files" area, where they
can be made available to other members of the list.

To do this, go to http://www.egroups.com/group/novaroma - if this is
your first visit to the eGroups site, you'll need to register, and
otherwise you'll need to sign in - then click Files. There's a
handy "Add File" button at the top of the page.

Hope this helps!

Very much so. I am working to have as many aspects of the script,
including the descriptions of the armour and other equipment used as
accurate as possible. The opening scenes are actually set in
Augustus' house, just before Varus takes up his commission as the new
governing legate of Germania. To research this scene I have obtained
a floor plan of his house on the Palatine and pictures of some of the
frescos on the walls of two audience chambers in his house from about
this time.

Ancient Roman arms and armour are a particular interest of mine and a
lot of the action will involve military material, so I will be
concentrating on this aspect to get as many details correct as I can.

I do have a fair bit of material on the Augustan period army and I've
read Junkelmann in English translation - thanks. The website you
mention is excellent. I recently spent a weekend laboriously
'translating' it using one of those literal translation websites. A
clumsy method perhaps, but it meant I was able to get a lot of
information about the Kalkriese excavations. I liked the mention of
a
bronze armour fitting with a legionary's name carved into it - he has
now become one of my characters in the screenplay.

I am using a couple of ancient history discussion forums to get the
project known and to ask questions when I am stuck on a point of
research. One that has been puzzling me lately is this:
Fragments of *lorica segmentata* were found at Kalkriese as well as
evidence of *lorica hamata*. I gather that it was a revelation when
the *segmentata* pieces were found because it had previously been
though this type of cuirass had been introduced in the reign of
Claudius. If the troops who fought in the Teutoburger Wald wore both
types of armour I am wondering which troop types wore what armour
type. The later Imperial Army had the legionaries wearing
*segmentata* with the cavalry and auxiliaries (generally) in
*hamata*,
but would this have been the case as early as Augustus? Thoughts and
comments welcome.
Cheers,

Tim O'Neill
