Salvete,
Some of you have inquired about the status of the Eagle. Quite
obviously, I have fallen behind in the publishing schedule. That has
changed. One issue is at the printer's office and will be sent out to
subscribers directly from there. Another issue is 3 or 4 days from
being sent to the printer's and should follow in the mail from there
a week or 2 after. I should be completely caught up soon.
My apologies to all subscribers for any inconvienience. If you have
any questions about the Eagle or about the status of your
subscription, please email me directly at bcatfd@-------- as I
will probably not see it if you post it here.

In a message dated 6/29/00 1:04:14 PM Pacific Daylight Time, S.A. Draco
(hendrik.meuleman@--------) writes:
Draco:
<< After all, there *is* quite a difference between making the
politics of the Senate more "accessible" to the common Nova Roman and
making it a total democracy where politicians are stuntmen rather than
people with some ideologies. I agree with much that was said in *both*
postings, but I do raise an eyebrow at the fact that Senate membership is
for a lifetime. It may be adequate in a way that they don't have to waste
their energy on elections and things like that, but there are other options
of (re-)elections, such as being (re-)elected on basis of the Quirites'
opinions on the capacities and things done for the NR community of the
candidate for the Senate.
Cassius:
The difficulty I find with this is that its a huge and fundamental departure
from the ancient Roman system. One of the most basic expressions of Roman is
"stability", the idea that people who have a permanent stake in something
will put forth the most consistent effort to maintain it. This is why Rome
was based on the family as it's most basic unit. This is why property
ownership and stake in social community were for so long the criteria for
being a soldier, knight, or senator. Elected officials are just as apt to
serve the people (read that *their* people) better than the state itself...
because their status depends on their popularity and electability.
The Roman system is to balance between the tyranny of a single ruler, and the
whims of the mob. Neither of those courses has ever proved to be stable. To
make all governmental positions elected is to assure that Nova Roma will veer
from one popular course to the next, depending on who's the best at whipping
up Citizen opinion. We have elected magistrates and FAR better than ancient
lines of communication to make sure that the will of the People is heard.
Must we remove all signs of permanence as well to match that? Remember, with
instant communication Nova Roma will always move faster than ancient Rome and
for us stability is a commodity that is in short supply, rather than in
excess.
Draco:
Because no matter how clear-minded a lot of
people here are, within a few decades, the Senate could become a bulwark of
conservatism and even dogmaticism, and if the Nova Romans can't have
something to say about that, this is what eventually, someday, can and will
happen. This is not a reproach to the current Senators of course, but I am
just talking about human nature in general. If I well remember, among the
(artistic) ancient Roman virtues was imitatio, (namely to take over another
artist's style or theme to honor him or her), but also aemulatio (to
improve it)! Nova Roma is indeed a more modern community than Antiqua Roma,
but that doesn't mean there can be always room for more improvement.
Cassius:
I find this idea to be even more interesting; it assumes that after some
period of service, (a year? two? ten?) ALL Senators will become moribund
conservatives incapable of enlightened decision, instead of more experienced
and discerning - and able to see situations in a way that new people with
less experience might not.
I can't help but see this as an example of the difference between the "old
civilization" and "new civilization" ideas on aging and maturity. In ancient
societies experience was in a way venerated. There's no coincidence that the
root of "Senate" comes from "Senex", or "old man". In new society age and
experience are sure signs of obsolescence... the old must be constantly
*replaced* by the new, not simply augmented by it. This is why people in the
modern world strive so much for youth... to not be young is to be worthless
and as good as dead.
Do we really believe that Senators who have been working with NR for years,
who've been through the resignations, and the list wars, and secret plots and
gods know what else, will automatically become less able to make good
decisions than the new person of the week coming in with new ideas?
The Senate is not a closed body. It will continue to grow, and bright, new,
enthusiastic Citizens are *supposed* to be added to it. It does not follow
that those who have paved the way for them must then be removed. The new
people with fresh ideas will join the Senate, if they can prove through
behavior and action that they will do well in such a position. In this way
the Senate will always have a new influx AND stability, instead of a constant
changeover.

Marcus Cassius Julianus

Salvete,
I am beginning to gather material for a new fictional Roman story, and
again, I would like to use real Nova Romans as characters.
Unlike 'The Scroll', this one is going to be serious, and darker, though
it will probably have some comic moments. It is set during the reign of Nero.
I would like the following people to be characters if they like the
idea.
Cassius and Patricia Cassia
Consul Audens
Piscinius
Draco
Rest assured that your roles will be dignified and in good taste.
Sulla....I can't make the same promise to you!
Are there any others who would like to be in an ancient Roman story? If so,
here is what I need. Please EMAIL me and tell me your age and a reasonably
accurate description of yourself. I need this to place people in appropriate
roles. {For instance, no 60 year old women as dancing girls! If you have a
scanned picture of yourself or can direct me to a web site with a picture of
you, that will help.
While I can't promise to be able to include everyone, I can promise that you
will not be depicted in any vulgar, tasteless roles. The story is serious,
but this is all for fun.

Salve, Festus;
I should be proud to be in any role that you assign to any story that
you feel the desire to write. While I am 63 and an "old man" to some in
NR, and I assure you that I am no dancing girl-- it's all I can do to
walk!!! I am always interested in a Roman story, so it may be that
buried in the "old man" there may still be just a small kernel of
appreciation for new ideas!!!! Do your worst, my friend--you always
have my interest and attention (grin!!!!!!!).

Salve,
There are a couple of companies that do reproduction lamps... these are
modern replicas which can be used for lighting at those posh Roman banquets
you're probably planning to throw! ;) I'll see if I can find some info for
you. Reproduction lamps generally sell for about $10.00
I deal in ancient artifacts and do have some authentic ancient ancient Roman
lamps. These technically could still be used, but since Roman lamps aren't
glazed the oil seeps through them and you wouldn't be doing them any favors.
Better to have the modern ones for use and an ancient one for display. I have
ancient lamps for $45.00 each, which come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
I'll be happy to answer any questions you have by off-list Email.
