Very well, Festus, if it is good enough for Consul Audens,
it's good enough for me! You may put me in your new opus, if
it please you. I am 52 years of age, of medium height, and
decidedly barbate. A picture of me is available at

Salve, Lauria Maria Crispa:
I just wanted to take a moment to wish you a warm welcome to Nova Roma. You
will find the civites very friendly; many of them in their list posts
provide us all with a wealth of information on their particular body of
knowledge of Ancient Rome.

Thank you, Lucius Cornelius.
In the Republic, the four aediles were responsible for public records;
streets, sanitation, and buildings; and public games.
At present, we have no streets or buildings... the most significant piece
of State property is the web server, and I have asked the Senate for
permission to take responsibility for the server, by moving the site
onto one of my machines.
I have created new tools for viewing and editing the citizens' database.
These include an Album Civium and Album Gentium that are always up to date,
and allow searching and display of citizens by gens or province. Soon,
customization of how your information is displayed will also be possible.
The database tools are nearly finished, and will require about one more
day's work before they can go "live" and replace the existing Alba. I have
been in communication with both Censors throughout this process and we plan
to make the switch on or about the Kalends of Sextilis/August. If
everything goes smoothly, I'd like to move the rest of www.NovaRoma.org
to the new server at the same time or shortly after.
(I'll be spending a week and a half in San Francisco for IBM Websphere
training beginning 7/9, and will finish the new Alba soon after returning).

I've been concentrating on maintaining public records and civic
infrastructure, and have neglected the area of games... but, then, we
do have two other aediles! :)

[novaroma] INVITATIO AD SODALITATEM LATINITATIS |

Salvete Senatus Populeque Novae Romae!
We of the Sodalitas Latinitatis Novae Romae would like to
express our deepest thanks to the Senate for its approval of
our Sodalitas. The unanimous vote of the Senators was highly
gratifying to us, and we hope to prove ourselves worthy of
the great support and confidence that the Senate has so
shown us. Our goal is to serve Nova Roma and Her citizens
through cultivating the noble and ancient tongue of Rome and
making it more accessible to all, together with its vast
literary heritage.
According to our founding procedures, we would at this point
in time like to invite all Nova Romans wishing to become
founding members of the Sodalitas to express their intent by
sending a message to latinitas@-------- stating their
full Nova
Roman name. Obviously this will provide us with your e-mail
address too, but if the correct address for some reason will
not appear in the header, you may put the correct address in
the body of the message. State clearly your desire to become
a member. (In Latin you could write "Velim sodalis
Sodalitatis Latinitatis Novae Romae fieri." - I would like
to become a member of the Latin Sodalitas of Nova Roma.)
Applications in other languages are also perfectly
acceptable.
If any non-citizens of Nova Roma are reading this, you are
also invited to join, and you will have full voting and
participation rights, except that only citizens of Nova Roma
may be elected to the Tresviri. You must, however, clearly
state that you are not a Nova Roman citizen in your
application message, or it will be invalid. (The membership
categories are different, and your Latin name if provided
would have to be understood differently, as you are not a
member of a gens.)
This should be done by July 21, A.U.C. 2753, at which time
we shall freeze the membership roll until after voting has
been completed. At a date to be announced, voting will take
place among the members to ratify the Lex Fundamentalis (the
Sodalitas constitution). There will also be a vote to elect
the Tresviri to replace the Founding Tresviri now organising
the initial phases of the Sodalitas. Following this, the
membership roll will again be opened to all. But if you wish
to be a founding member, sign up now!
Membership does not require a knowledge of Latin, but only a
sincere interest therein. Much of the Sodalitas' work is
done on its list in Latin, however, and this can only be
participated in fully if you know or are prepared to learn
Latin. One may, of course, also post in English or any other
language known to persons on the list.
We also invite all interested parties to sign up to the list
<Latinitas> at eGroups: ( http://egroups.com/group/latinitas
) Note that signing up for this list in itself does *not*
count as a membership application. All new *members* should
sign up for this list *in addition to* applying for
membership, however, as this is where official announcements
on voting arrangements will be posted.
If anyone has questions, please feel free to contact one of
the following Founding Tresviri:
Gaius Marius Merullus
Gaius Cordius Symmachus
Marcus Apollonius Formosanus
Again, we thank the Senate and all Nova Roma for your
support, and hope that we will be able to serve you well to
make Latin alive again in Life, Religion and Art.
Dii Romani nos bene ament in opere nostro.

If any one has any suggestions or ideas, please let me know. Also, if
any Magistrates, Senators, Pontifices, etc... wish to be featured in the

Salve Laura Maria! (now I know I've got the wrong case here, could
one of the Latinists let me know how I should address a lady?)
As a citizen of Nova Britannia and an alumna of Boston University I
bid you doubly welcome!
We are planning a Nova Britannia convocation in Maine in October, and
may do one or two informal events in between. In addition, Cassius
and I do visit Boston from time to time and would love to meet you in
person.
Your thesis topic sounds fascinating! Let us know if you hear of
anything Roman-related happening in Boston.

How about writing something about Emperor Commodus' attested
gladiatorial addiction, in the form of historical fiction? You could
provide a worthwhile (i.e. more accurate) counterpoint to the current
movie (which of course I loved).

Your advisor is right. The first source to mention the Mithraic Mysteries of
the Tauroctonos Mithras comes from Statius who wrote in the second half of
the 1st century AD.
In contrast, all the deities you have mentioned were adopted during the
Republic.

Aletheia and I use reproduction cast bronze lamps modelled on an original
found in Pompeii. One was slightly flawed and leaked until I coated the
inside in Rad-Weld and baked it in a hot oven to approximate car engine
heat. Now they are as un-messy as can be. If anybody's interested, I'll find
out the name of the supplier from the place we bought them from.
