Ave,
I have just purchased a book called, Roman Law: An Historical Introduction, by Hans Julius Wolff. ISBN: 0-8061-1296-4, Published by University of Oklahoma Press. I was wondering if anyone has heard of it, and if you have, what are your thoughts. I have just started reading it and it looks interesting. The Introduction states it is a basic introduction to Roman Law from the period of the Kings all the way to the Byzantine Era.
Also, if anyone else has any other recommendations, I would really like to hear them. I find this type of law very fascinating. :)

Salvete omnes
This is one of the dies nefasti (N), a day on which no legal action or
public voting can take place.
The Nonae of Quinctiliae are called Caprotinae because they are sacred to
Ivno Caprotina. On this day slave girls dressed as matrons were chased from
the temple of Iuno, gathering under the wild fig trees outside the city. The
milky juice of the fig-tree is offered to Iuno, and branches are cut from
the trees, used by the girls to whip one another in a celebration called the
Ancillarvm Feriae. Plutarch associates this feast to the events that occured
during the sack of Rome by the Gauls. After the Gauls had captured Rome, the
Latins advanced on the city and demanded the Romans hand over their women. A
serving girl named Philotis suggested that the Romans send out their
servants dressed as free women. This was done, and the serving girls then
disarmed the Latins while they slept. Philotis then lit a wild fig-tree on
fire as a signal to the Romans, who fell upon the Latins and defeated them.
Today, the Pontifices or the sacerdotes publici sacrifice to Consus on the
underground altar of the Circus Maximus. Consus sacralises the storage of
the grains after the harvest of June.
This is also the feast Palibus Duobus, dedicated to "the two Pales" (male
and female?), deities of shepherds and sheep.

As I'm not available tomorrow, here is the posting for the day.
*********************************************************
This is one of the dies nefasti (N), a day on which no legal action or
public voting can take place.
Today is the Vitulatio, a sacrifice offered to Goddess Vitula by the
Pontifices. It seems that this celebrates the victory of the Romans over the
Etruscans, after the Poplifugia on July 5th. Others regard Vitula as a
tutelary Goddess of life (vita). In fact the fruits of the Earth are offered
to her. But Macrobius refers also to the calf (vitula) which Vergilius says
to be offered "pro frugibus" (for the fruits).
Today is the third day of the Ludi Apollinaris.
The month of Quinctilis was renamed Iulius in 44 BCE in honour of the
deified C. Iulius Caesar. This month is sacred to Iuppiter.

I was wondering if anyone had ever considered doing up an actual calendar
that could be used at home or the office? Not something that would replace
all the wonderful information provided to us by Antonius Gryllus Graecus, but
simply something we could have on hand for reference? I thought it might
also be a good conversation starter. You never know where you'll find more
people who have been looking for Nova Roma! :)

Salve,
I was hoping to produce just such a calender for this year, but didn't have
quite enough information about all the holidays, "fasti" days, etc. in order
to make it accurate.
The information that Pontiff Graecus has been researching will be invaluable

Well, that's an easy one -- I think, although my Italian isn't so great. I
think that you asked "Who will win?", vincera looks like a future form, as
opposed to conditional vincerebbe (?).
So, unless the book that you have been reading is fantasy, Lucius Cornelius
Sulla will win, although the Gaius Marius left in Rome to face him is not
the great man himself but a younger one, actually his son.

Well, very little of it was Latin. The bulk was Italian, and the gist
of it was that Marcus Attilius is going to be spending 10 days in
Sardinia, reading about the civil war between the historical C Marius
and L Cornelius. Quies et otium means peace and quiet.

Be *very* wary of much of the info in the calendar at this site; there are
plenty of howlers in terms of mistaking one emperor for another (e.g.
Tiberius for Claudius) and plenty of others besides. By the end of summer,
my 'This Day in Ancient History' site will be updated and relocated and
should satisfy many folks' desire for accurate info in this regard (this is
not, by the way, suggesting that our own Nova Roma calendar is not an
admirable piece of work).
