Has anyone bought this book ("Classical Living: Reconnecting With The
Rituals Of Ancient Rome" by Frances
Bernstein) and had time to read through it? Any reviews? If it's decent,
can we add it to our web page, so that we can buy it from Amazon.com and
Nova Roma can get a cut? I may still have the link that someone formatted
somewhere...

The idea of recreating classes has a certain appeal, therefore if
any one cares to volunteer to be my household slave, I will consider
any applications. In return for labor in the house and garden I offer
a cot in the kitchen, a new tunic and blanket every year, as well as
healthy, nutritious leftovers. I generally keep a vegitarian kitchen,
but make exceptions for feast days. You would have Market Day
afternoons off, and light duties during Saturnalia! I'll be waiting

The time has come, I think, for your Curatrix Sermonem to post a few
words regarding behavior on this list. These should be considered
suggestions, intended to make this list a place for learning and
community.
1) Demanding things seldom works. If you want someone to do
something, ask nicely, offering factual information where needed,
offering to help where appropriate, and offering specific suggestions
for action. Act on the assumption that any offensive remark was not
intended as such by the sender. (This is often true, and when it
isn't, you still make yourself look good by acting with an extra dose
of dignitas and allowing your adversary an opportunity to save face).
2) This list has a lot of people on it, and too much traffic makes it
difficult for ordinary e-mail users to keep up. To keep the list as
open for general discussion as possible, I'd like to suggest that if
you have something to say to one person, say it in private e-mail to
that person. The same applies when your real audience is just a few
people, rather than the whole list.
3) The way to drop a subject is to refrain from posting about it,
resisting all impulses to get in your last word. For extra credit,
post about something else, preferably something productive and
interesting.
4) In general, typing in all capital letters is considered "shouting"
in Internet forums. This applies to subject lines as well. Also, pay
attention to subject lines, out of consideration for list members who
are making decisions about what to read. If you are posting in a
thread titled "Roman military engineering," for example, but the
subject has turned to the status of slaves in the Roman world, change
your subject line to reflect the new topic. Some people who had no
interest in the first topic will enjoy the second, and vice versa.
5) If you have a suggestion which you would like to bring to the
Senate, write it up with as many specific suggestions for action as
possible and send it to senate@-------- I promise we will
examine your ideas.
6) If you have any questions or suggestions about how to make this
list better, please e-mail me privately at pcassia@--------
Thank you all for being here - and a special thanks to those whose
continued good behavior makes this a place to ask questions, get
answers, hold civilized discussions and get to know your fellow Nova
Romans.

[novaroma] ATTN (Religio Romana): ante diem XIV Kalendas Sextilias (July 19th) |

Salvete omnes
This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.
Today is the fist day of the Lucaria which take place on July 19 and July
21. The exact meaning is since long forgotten, but the feast is probably in
honour of the deity of the grove (lucus), that stood on the Capitoline Hill
between the Arx and the Capitol, where the Asylum had been delineated by
Romulus. The third of the original tribes of Romans, the Luceres, took their
name from this grove, where the stateless fugitives, slaves and outlaws,
were received into Romulus' protection. The other tribes, the Ramnenes and
Tatienses, took their names from Romulus and Tatius, respectively. The
Ramnenes would have been the Albans and the Titienses the Sabines. The
Luceres would have been composed of the "Other", the uncategorized
foreigners accepted in Rome.
The Lucaria must then have celebrated the deity of the grove, Asylaeus, and
who was the collective tutelary dity of the Luceres.
The celebration consisted on a ritual clearing up of the woods and fences,
cutting and burning the shrubs. So, the feast can also have been the
celebration of all the Genii Loci, the spirits of the places, woods and
groves, close to Leucaria (mother of Roma) and Rhea Silvia (mother of
Romulus and Remus).
The month of Quinctilis was renamed Iulius in 44 BCE in honour of the
deified C. Iulius Caesar. This month is sacred to Iuppiter.
Pax Deorum vobiscum
Antonius Gryllus Graecus
Pontifex

Salvete, Citizens;
I am having some problems with my WebTV Unit in that I cannot read all
of the messages on Digest without getting a "This page is too long"
determination on the screen. Since this seems to vary in what I am
allowed to view, every time I try it, it is somewhat disconcerting. If
anyone has a suggestion for this problem, I would be glad to hear it.
This has started only in the last week or so.
Within the last two weeks or so, there have been one or two requests of
me to set some items before the Senate for consideration at the next
Senate Call. The Senior Consul who presently holds the fasces has
indcated that upon his return from PA, he intends to make that call.
I would ask that anyone desiring me to write a proposal to place on the
agenda please notify me ASAP. If you have asked before, (since the last
Senate Call) I ask that you make the request again in order to make sure
nothing is overlooked.
I remind the new citizens that a proposal to be placed before the Senate
for a decision is best deliniated in a Yes / No answer format.
Questions / Items to be discussed by the Senate may also be offered of
course, but no decision will be rendered.
I thank you all most cordially for your kind patience in this matter.
Valete, Respectfully;
Marcus Minucius Audens

Salve, Patricia Cassia
I will try to answer your questions, sure. So, the bread consists of
Wheat meal
a sort of grain called "Dinkel" in german language, also as meal
Honey
Water
Salt
Fennel
Anise
Yeast
The mixture of all that is baked for about 20 minutes in an oven heated by
charcoal.
The bread smells very good, full of flavour with a small sweet taste. The
grain is of "Vollkorn" in German, a partly mealed grain.
I can´t deliver a receipt, I´m sorry, but I have a receipt of Military
Bread. If you´re interested, I will post in during the next days.

Salvete, Citizens;
In a recent incident on this net an unfortunate remark was made which
alluded to a difference in the veracity of one country as a whole. Such
a remark is of course erroneous and insulting if in fact the true
meaning was to indent upon all the members of that nationality, which I
strongly doubt. In any event, it was not a terribly clever thing to say
on this net where it could be so easily misunderstood.
One of the citizens mentioned that it was unfortunte that no-one had
commented on that natonal reference. I wish again to point out that not
everone is glued to their computer. In my case, this is the summer
reenactment season and I am gone almost every weekend and sometimes
during the week as well. In addition, I have been having some small
problems with my computer. So, I believe some patience is required in
these items before being too critical.
In relation to the subject and its vital importance to this micronation,
let me say this:
In my view, there is little difference in the intentions of any people
except for language, culture and political divisions. I have lived and
or visited a good number of countries in this old world, and most of
those represented in NR. I find that the honesty, integrity, and pride
of the residents of these countries rival that of my own. I have never
been refused hospitality, information or any reasonable request for aid
/ assistance in any country I have visited.
My reenactor friends often accuse me of being more British than
American, when I lived in Spain, I wore Spanish clothes, shopped in
Spanish stores, banked in Spanish banks and idled on long hot evenings
in the Spanish way. My visits to the Portuguese Islands were pure
enjoyment. These people are hard-working, courteous, and very proud
people, and they have cause to be proud with thier clean cities, and
obvious industry to better themselves and the lovely country they call
home. Much the same can be said, in my estmation, for most of the other
countries I have visited, Germany, Italy, Greece, Malta, North Africa,
various countries in the Carribean and South America, Australia,
Phillapines, China, Japan, Micronesia.
I am an American, and I am proud to be such, but I have found that my
many friends around the world, have the right to be proud of thier
countries as well, while also being helpful, couteous and hospitable,
and I bend over backwards to assure thier rights to that pride and
heritage.
If anyone who has identified himself / herself to be my political
associate or advisor, or in any capacity working with me in Nova Roma,
has made a statement which causes bad feeling in regard to national
pride then I most humbly apologize for that individual, and I ask that
individual to make the proper amends. It is difficult for me to believe
that a person who has agreed to assist me as Consul, considering the
personal agreement that we have, would be so deliberate as to insult
another country. Words get twisted here as do meanings, and it is easy
to make a serious mistake without thinking.
For my part, I take some part of the blame upon myself for the obvious
lack of inspiration tendered to any such colleague, and having assumed
that portion of responsibility, do hereby most humbly apologize for the
lapse and for any discord or discomfort caused by such a lapse. I
cannot, of course, speak for every person in NR, but for myself, I honor
the countries who have favored us with their citizens, and exult in the
fact that I am able to drink freely and often of thier wit, thier
knowledge and thier culture.
Salvete, Very Respectfully and Sincerely;
Marcus Minucious Audens

[novaroma] "Clementia" Closing |
From: |
"M. Apollonius Formosanus" <bvm3@--------> |
Date: |
Wed, 19 Jul 2000 16:47:54 +0200 |
|
M. Apollonius Formosanus Quiritibus et Senatoribus Novae
Romae S.P.D.
I would like to thank all of you who had constructive
replies, even if critical, to my post on the bringing to an
end of the ordeal of the unfortunate once-and-future civis
Lucius Marius Aurelianus. Among these I wish to first note
that of Censor C. Marius Merullus. He is a my brother in the
Sodalitas Latinitatis, where working with him has given me
considerable respect for his decency, capacity and probity.
Because both he and another Senator whom I respect highly,
M. Cassius Iulianus, have asked me politely to do so, I
shall agree *temporarily* to give the Censors a respite in
which to administer the law they made in a proper and fair
manner with no further interventions from me. My primary
reason for doing so is that there were strong intimations
that the case is finally going to be resolved in a quiet and
normal fashion, which is all I am concerned with. Giving
them a few weeks to accomplish that is surely reasonable. I
shall, as one would expect, be watching and collecting
information ready to act longer and less tractably in the
future if this implied promise is not kept. If I have been
impatient, it is because this has already been allowed to
drag along for too long and to cause avoidable suffering to
a person who does not merit it. But after this post I shall
be silent on this particular issue for a while unless in
response to new postings by others or a change in the
situation.
Let us all remember that the decisions and edicta which
have held Marius out of Nova Roma have been made by human
beings. These decisions and their written generalisations
have caused much mental anguish. If those decisions had not
been made to stop a person from simply having a name of his
choice in good Roman form officially registered (and being
allowed to use it in oaths of office, ideally), human
suffering would have been avoided. And if we had from the
very beginning let Marius live among us under that name *how
would Nova Roma have been harmed*??? Obviously it would not
have been harmed in any way. We now have legislation in
place which will permit exactly the same person to do that
after much tribulation and expense that could have been
avoided. But by insisting that someone define his identity
contrary to his own feelings we have seen both suffering and
conflict generated which have hurt living, breathing human
beings and have hurt the tranquility of Nova Roma. With no
gain to anyone.
The mistakes of the past cannot be completely undone,
but the Censors who have limited freedom in an way
completely unnecessary for the good of the Respublic,
creating tension and dissatisfactions that were perfectly
avoidable, have to take the responsibility for that, and
recognising that bring this situation to a decent,
compassionate and speedy close. Then we can all have peace
from this.
I would like to thank L. Cornelia Aurelia for her
research into the difficult, expensive and otherwise unjust
and harassing laws and bureaucracy that people still have to
suffer with in various lands and jurisdictions. I would like
to think that due to our idealism based on our Virtues and
the fact that we have such rapid public communications due
to our being a very small and predominantly
internet-connected community, we could do better than the
macronations in our arrangements, and show more compassion
and justice and freedom from bureaucracy.
I might note that in my last post ("Clementia") I did
not mention sex change, but *name change to a name normally
associated with another gender*. If I used U.S. state law,
it would be relatively easy (as Cornelia points out) to have
my name legally changed. And if a "man" wanted to become
"Mary" instead of "William", that would, I do believe,
normally be permitted. That is the true case to be
considered. I have never heard that Marius insisted on
having a checkmark beside a box for "male" in the records, I
have just heard that he wanted his name to have a certain
grammatical form. ***Any connection with bodily sexuality
was purely the result of a censor making things difficult
for citizens without advantage to the State.***
I would also like to thank Senator M. Cassius Iulianus
for taking the trouble to go through and annotate my rather
long post. I cannot agree with every point you made,
Senator, but on the whole your comments breathed Humanitas
and good sense.
My most *special* thanks goes to our very own Festus,
who so brilliantly satirised some of my writing. A good
satire is to be admired, and it can also be instructive on
surprisingly profound philosophical levels. The political
purpose of this piece is, of course, to change some of the
terms in my arguments in a manner that will make the form
look incorrect, or even absurd, so that my conclusions will
seem unproven.
But a little careful consideration will show that
despite the apparent similarities between the argument with
your terms inserted and my original, it is a comparison of
apples and oranges, and whereas my argument makes sense,
yours is so different that it is no wonder it does not
convince people. So, let's take a look.
Festus wrote:
This is to complain about the injustice I have suffered at
the hands of
Censor Sulla.
I quite agree it is good to complain of injustice, and
to do so loudly and long until it is eliminated.
This is little known to the population at large, as it
is an issue I
have kept private. I do not identify myself with humanity.
I am a
trans-ontologized person. While having the physical form of
a man, I am, in fact, a God. Specifically, I am an
incarnation of Pan-Min, a hybrid of the Greek deity and the
Egyptian, being as I am a God of Joy in a perpetual state of
massive erection. I accordingly asked Sulla for a name
change which would allow me to incorporate the names of
these deities and that I be allowed my own cult within Nova
Roma, with a Priestess appointed to tend to My rites. I ask
the State nothing other than giving Me my due in this
matter!
Many would say you were a brave man to satirise the
deities having such a close association with this part
of the anatomy. Be that as it may, "Pan" and "Min",
being of Greek and Egyptian form do not meet the
fundamental criteria for Nova Roman names very easily.
I never suggested that the very fine work of both Sulla
and Merullus in regulating the Romanness and Latinity
of our names be disgarded; it makes far more sense than
the involuntary connection of that with physical
sexuality.
Religious cults in Nova Roma should be referred to the
College of Pontiffs, not the Censor's office. I
certainly never proposed a cult for the person I have
been defending, and indeed his modesty would not allow
it, although I understand in your case that this would
not pose a problem.
I also quite understand about wanting that priestess. A
natural desire. :-)
As to the whole history, I think that the essence of it
is simple:
I. You have personal trouble with a trans-ontologized
individual because you honestly believe that "A human is a
human and a
God is a God" in a rather limiting and over-simplified
sense.
You do have a point here. I believe most seriously in
the divine spark of Ratio in every human person (yes,
even you), and we should note too that many Roman
emperors were officially divinised.
2. I, Gaius Lupinius Festus The Divine Pan-Min have
discovered through introspection and self-observation that I
has a Divine nature. I wish to be
treated on the basis of that, My true core identity, in
social relations.
This, of course, is the crux of the matter. Why not
believe in, respect and act on your inner perception if
we grant another person the right to discover his sex
and to expect us to respect and act upon it? (I might
wonder if a real deity would write "I has", but I shall
not content myself with so simple an answer, easy
though it would be.)
To tell the truth, I basically agree with you. We
should allow you to believe what you wish and address
you by any Romanly-correct form you may propose, say C.
Lupinius Panminus Divinus.
There are some problems, though, which were not there
in my case.
1) It is reasonable to expect that a human being will
be male-heterosexual, female-heterosexual,
male-homosexual, female-homosexual, male-ambisexual,
female-ambisexual, male-asexual, female-asexual or
asexual-asexual in psychosexual orientation and
identity. If he she (or it?) introspects and discovers
one of these psychological predispositions, it is
logically inevitable (barring lies) and empirically
probable that what is reported to the world is true. It
might be a self-protective lie if any of these
orientations is discriminated against, but it makes no
practical difference, as it costs nothing to others to
respect the identity the other wishes to project in
little things like name and pronoun. And the sexes are
equal in Nova Roman society, so there is no clear
advantage in choosing one over another for any reason
other than one feels it to be true for one.
2) Being a deity is a high-prestige occupation. It is
extremely conceivable that someone claiming to feel
this identity subjectively is in fact a victim of
wishful thinking or deliberate prevarication. Not
certain, but this element of enhanced prestige in the
highest degree is attactive to conscious and
subconscious alike, and it makes claims of a change of
status vis-à-vis human beings that a sexual variation
does not.
3) We also observe that in the Religio Romana, gods
living on the earth in human form are very rare.
Normally persons who become divine, like emperors, do
so after they have passed from this earth.
Statistically speaking, that makes any given human
being's claim to be a god highly unlikely, although
perhaps not impossible. Having one of the sexual
variations mentioned above is, by contrast, virtually
100% certain, whichever one it may be, and there is no
paticular reason for doubt or suspician.
4) Due to the combined reasons for doubt in a case like
yours, completely different from someone claiming a
given psychosexual orientation/identity, it is
reasonable to demand more proof in your case.
Fortunately you have given us a way to check your
claims. If Censor Sulla were to turn to me, his Scriba,
and ask what to do, I would have to recommend a
physical examination. After all, you did specify as
part of your claim to divinity that your, um, organ was
constantly in a certain state of perpetual tumescence,
and if the Censors were to substantiate this claim, it
would partly verify your larger claim. Whereas, if they
disconfirmed this claim, it would make the larger claim
of divinity highly unlikely, since you linked them.
It should be noted that in the matter of physical
confirmation, someone who is making a claim of sexual
orientation/identity is stating a purely psychological
fact. Such facts are found *only* in the psyche, as one
would suspect. They have nothing essential to do with
the shape of body one is in, and so cannot be confirmed
or disconfirmed by physical inspection. Your, case,
however, is partly confirmable/disconfirmable by
external inspection, and you should make an appointment
to come unto the Censors' offices as soon as possible.
My Censor is very much in favour of bodily inspection.
:-)
3. Sulla has constantly threatened to invoke precedent and
Edicta to
thwart the official recognition of My Godhood man by the
Divine Name
which feels appropriate to me. All he does is blather about
"blasphemy of the gods" and such, which is really
irritating, since I do not feel blasphemed at all. The real
blasphemy, in My Divine opinion, is that NOT to allow my
name change and official cult is blaspheming against moi.
I quite understand your feelings (if you are really
what you claim or have been deluded by a subconsious
craving for the rewards of god-hood), but as pointed
out above there is a far bigger claim in your case than
in the case of the gentleman whose interests I was
defending.
4. My interest in this as a civis of Nova Roma is that
justice be done here. IUSTITIA is one of those virtues that
Nova Roma exists to further, as is
AEQUITAS. And as I see the matter, Iustitia demands that we
RESPECT Gods such as I. One's spirit and one's identity and
one's ontological self-understanding are all very private
and intimate things, and they are matters for us
individually to decide according to our most inward sense of
self. To deny anyone the right to make those decisions and
to live outwardly in accordance with the identity one knows
oneself to have is to fail in Iustitia.
Well put! I could not have said it better myself. And
indeed a respect for Iustitia is divine. However, as
mentioned above, the criteria for proof of god-hood are
naturally not the same as for proving that you have
*some* sexual orientation/identity, which is
practically certain and practically irrelevant in terms
of prestige.
Instead, what did Sulla do? He said if I could produce
documentation
that a macronation recognized me as a God, he would treat me
as an an
exception and allow me my name change, as well as petition
the College of Pontiffs to organize My Cult. He also said
he would petition the Senate to bestow the Divine Worship
which is my due on another Trans-Ontologized person of old
Rome, Caligula.
Yup, I quite agree that this is a lot of rigamarole. We
have our own inspectors who can recognise an erect
organ when they see one, and capable of using a
calendar to determine the perpetuity of such a state.
But, then, you have to consider that in the case of the
person whose interests I was defending no cult was
thrown in as an incentive for going along with all of
this hassle - indeed no compensation was offered for
the time and money wasted in jumping through these
hoops. In offering a divine cult, Sulla could be called
magnanimous, and I might think that a little effort
could be spared by you in offering proofs with such
generous compensation already in sight. (Even that
priestess, I guess...)
This is unfair. I see myself as a God and that should be
enough for him
and the Senate and the College. When a God says 'jump', the
only thing they need to do is ask 'how high, divinity?'.
We should indeed all jump when someone makes a just
claim on us, true. But that you 1) really see yourself
as a god [Don't I remember a certain Festus loudly
saying in public hearing that the gods didn't exist?]
and 2) are correct in so seeing yourself, are two
things that must be proven first, after which I am sure
everyone will ask "How high?"
The Divine Gaius Lupinius Festus Pan-Min
_______________________________________
I hope we all had fun with Festus' satire. And I hope we
all see clearly the differnce in claims between his and mine
on Marius' behalf. Everybody in the world is one of the
sexual types listed above, and one's orientation/identity is
a purely psychological matter only having a loose relation
to one's physical body or any external thing. There is no
way to be completely sure of someone's sexual
orientation/identity except by asking. And even then someone
could lie. So, in the absence of certainty, it is rational
to just go along with whether a person wants us to use
pronouns "he" or "she" and put an -A or an -US at the end
of his/her names. It does not harm us or Nova Roma, so why
not be agreeable?
God-hood is, however, something making a claim beyond
what is in the psyche. A god, quite literally speaking,
should have ichor in his veins, be immortal, and perhaps
have other powers. And a god might legitimately desire a
cult, thus imposing socio-religious obligations on others.
Because claims to objective realities are then being made,
it is reasonable to expect objective proofs.
___________________________________________
As I said above, I shall now be quiet for a while on
this matter unless there are new posts or new facts. The
issue will not go away completely until justice has been
done, obviously.
And there are other public issues to deal with, indeed.
The most obvious is that Festus gave the appearance of
insulting all Britanni. I myself am willing to believe his
explanation that he only meant to attack the governor
(although that fact is not in itself a bit pleasing, said
governor being one of the finest Romani among us). But
people being people, many Britanni, and maybe a lot of
Europeans, and even a lot of non-Americans in general may
feel something very unwelcome here. It would really be an
unfortunate thing if it became common. One might then begin
to hear anti-American comments too. And Nova Roma could
become divided by this in an extreme and ugly way. We have
not had this problem so far, so maybe you could reassure the
Britanni a bit more, or even give them a little apology? Or
at least an explanation other than that you were "just"
attacking their governor by mentioning his
nationality/provincia? I am sure that you can find better
ways to attack Vado than mentioning where he lives
disparagingly, which implicates other innocent people. You
are resourceful that way. :-).
Bene valete omnes!

Salve all,

We are redoing some of the rooms (mainly my study) here at Casa Tiberia and
are really considering some repro stuff for a base
(Besides I just got a Lifesize bust of Ole' Julius Caeser himself as a
centerpiece, can't keep the poor guy in a room full of Ethan Allen's
Hattaras collection, now can I??

I've seen some Roman-themed furniture in the more expensive catalogs,
but nothing that makes any kind of case for itself as being based on
actual ancient furniture. Please post here if you find anything! A
triclinium would be nice... ;)

I don't believe that will happen. I confess that sometimes I feel irritated
with the too many references to the (in my personal, humble opinion) not so
democratic Constitution of the USA and its numerous ammends. Nevertheless, I
don't feel that those things have a too big proportion.
>Festus is a loose cannon, and so is that Tiberius. I would

Apolloni. Two Censores have enacted a joint edict. The Senate trusts the
Censores. The Tribuni seem not to be willing to call the Comitia. The matter
of trangendered people is CLOSED, at least until the next elections. I
confess I've not been reading the thread about Marcus Aurelianus or Lucius
Fimbria. I personally don't care, and I even care less about personal
disputes.
>Why is a
>Praetor not getting both of them into line?
Has someone presented charge? I've not received any official pleas for a
public trial, together with the due proofs (copies of postings) to analyse
and a list of witnesses.

>think, supposed to have some rtle in keeping this list

While talking of lions and crucifixion, It seems that it is not me who wants
to tear and crucify. As to my duty on keeping the list civilised, I've
already told my point some time ago:
I have enacted an order for the subscribers of the list to close the
trangendered topic as dangerous for the unity of the State. My order was
considered to be against the Constitution and vetoed. A Curator Sermonum was
appointed as a solution to the problem and I intend to respect and follow
the instructions of the Senate.
