Subject: [novaroma] WinAmp Skinz

Salvete!
There was discussion about a month ago about ICQ and WinAmp skins for
Nova Roma. I made a basic skin for WinAmp for Nova Roma. You should get
the latest version of WinAmp if you don't have it and want the skin. If you
don't have WinAmp, you can download it at: www.winamp.com
If you have WinAmp, just start up the WinAmp program and then download
the skin file from
http://www.egroups.com/files/novaroma/Skins/NovaRoma.wsz
To use the skin, first start up WinAmp. Then, go to the above link
(http://www.egroups.com/files/novaroma/Skins/NovaRoma.wsz). Then, choose to
"Open the file from its current location", not to "Download" it, when
prompted. The skin should change automatically after it is done opening.
If you download the skin by accident, then copy it to your \Skins
subdirectory of your WinAmp directory (usually c:\Windows\Program
Files\Winamp\Skins) and then choose to change the skin from the menu.
I tried to mimic the style of our homepage -- marble background,
red/yellow/gold color scheme, small flag, etc. Some of the buttons (and
especially the equalizer) are subtle, so you may have to look close. ;)
I'm not an artist, and this is only my first skin. I'll try to improve on
it and make alternative ones as time goes on and time becomes available.
I couldn't come up with much MP3 music in Latin to listen to on quick
notice in WinAmp with your Nova Roma skin, but Apotheosis' "O Fortuna Remix"
is nice. It's at:
http://www.colorado.edu/cure/Barn/uploaded/Apotheosis%20-%20O%20Fortuna%20Re
mix.mp3

beginning! Once some folks get to know each other it becomes easier to have
more such gatherings. The important thing is to make sure everyone is
comfortable and feels free to share ideas, etc. and things will grow from
there. :)

Cassius:
If you don't mind a bit of advice, it might be easiest not to hold your very
first meeting strictly to an ancient Roman format. Being able to talk and
share a meal together is of course important, but if you're stuck for easy
entertainment otherwise, watching a video of "Fall of the Roman Empire" might
well be more fun than reading aloud from the works of Virgil! A Roman game
such as Tabula might help as well. The BIG thing to remember is that some
fellow Citizen's spouses, while tolerant of Roman things, might find a "pure
ancient" Roman gathering boring and be disinclined to attend a second
get-together. You can't go wrong with providing alternative stuff to do.

>I
am hoping to have one gathering a month but my wife said that that was too
much(my Legio boys don't think so we are going to meet every month for
"training!?!"heh heh), every two or three months would be good.

Cassius:
Your wife is wise! Listen to her! ;) No need to do a lot of planning right at
the beginning. If you can manage a fun evening where everyone finds some
common interest, you've succeeded. Let the folks involved plan the next
event. If everyone involved had fun it might be sooner... if some more
"testing" is needed you can put it off for a couple months. However, don't
let the evening pass without some sort of future commitment, if you can help
it.

As far as the Legio, meeting more often for that is only to be expected. Most
of the Legions I've heard of get together for "fabriciums" or crafting nights
where they work on armor and gear, and also times for drill, etc.

> I also
believe what our good Consuls say, that face to face interaction in our home
Praefectures is critical in order to build a proper foundation for Nova Roma
to sit upon. I would appreciate any more help if anyone has any more
information, I have read the web site and it is great, but it doesn't say as
to the proper agenda for such a gathering should be.

Cassius:
The Provincia are critical in my opinion as well. Nova Roma couldn't be done
without the Internet... but the more it can do outside the Internet the
stronger it will become. People bond best when they get to meet each other in
person and share their lives outside the computer. I am uncertain what other
advice to give you since I'm not sure exactly what plans you have so far. If
you wish to email me off list to discuss things further, (and thereby avoid
boring everyone to death with very small details) feel free! :)

Vale, Quintus Sertorius:

Actually, I for one find this line of discussion quite welcome!!! I planned a
Roman Feast for a group of non-Rome loving friends a few years ago and it was
successful but they decided I was nuts. I Second Cassius' observation to go
slowly....and also take suggestions of what they'd LIKE to do.

I posted an mp3 file in the Misc. folder of the Files section.
It's probably one many of you have heard, the hymn from the GLADIATOR

Can someone tell me if the vocalist is singing in Latin?

Salvete!

As it happens, I went to that exhibit yesterday.
There is a good collection of authentic glatiator
equipment, as well as some recreated gear to try on.
Combined with this show is one on the coliseum and one
on Roman kids' games. It was well worth the DM 12, -,
particularly if one visits Speyer Dom, just a block
away (and free).

Salve Senator

Thank you for the opportunity I now have of being advised by a Senator no
less. I have 13 adults, not including their children, that have said they
are interested in attending this event. If all show up I estimate that there
will be 25+ persons(if all show!). I have not asked all the people I attend
to ask yet, nor have I opened this the general public, yet(this I will do
for the next time). I want to make this event and all future ones a family
affair, not pushing anyone to fast, yet I do not want to have anyone loss
sight of the fact that we are here to spread Roman virtues. As far as an
agenda for the event(I want to start in the afternoon), I felt that we
should get every one together first for light beverages and
conversation(around 2P.M.). Then I will have everyone seated for the
meal(around 3P.M.) which will have at least some Roman period fair(I do not
know what to do for food and drink). At this time I will begin the
explanation as to what I would like to see in the future(during this short
speech everyone will be eating). After the meal I want to make a
presentation that I am working on for approaching various institutions about
our Republic, don't worry it will not be boring. I have been told that my
public speaking is strong(I was a drill sergeant, but I won't scream at
them!). To close off the night I want to have everyone sit and discuss what
ever they want. Before the end of the night I will ask about the next
gathering(by this time I should have gauged the group as to the possible
frequency of future gatherings). Throughout this whole event I hope to
insert as much Romanism as possible. this will be the first of what I hope
will be regular gatherings that will spread the word of our Republic. I
would like to know what your thoughts are on this matter.

Vale

Subject: [novaroma] Emblem for LegioI Germanica
From: "Quintus Sertorius" <quintus-sertorius@-------->

Salve

We will follow the very good advice given by Consul Audens to follow Legio XX's Commander when he
states:

..."...I agree with the previous answers, play it safe and stick to what
evidence there is. If you don't know what the symbol of Legio I Germanica
was, you don't have to use one at all: those vexilla (banners) seen in
artwork apparently never show a symbol. Some are blank (the paint having
worn off) and some have only lettering, so "LEG.I.GER" would be perfectly
accurate. The animal symbols are not always seen on the signum, either, so
a few discs, a spearpoint or hand, and a crescent and tassel are all you
need (not that those are simple items to come up with...). If someone
starts to grill you about your Legion's symbol, just tell them "We don't
know!"..."...

Therefore we should use a staff with discs, crescent, and tassel, toped with
a spearpoint over the inscription stating:"LEG.I.GER". Of course if there is
any more evidence or advice it will be greatly appreciated.

Vale

Quintus Sertorius

Salvete

Sorry for not having been available on July 23. Here is the religious
posting for the day.

*****************************************************

This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.

Today is the Neptunalia, a festival in honour of Neptunus, the God of all
the fresh water, from rivers, from springs; the refreshing water. Identified
with the Greek Poseidon, Neptunus rules also over the seas. The Neptunalia
comes in the hottest days of Summer, when water is needed most.

The month of Quinctilis was renamed Iulius in 44 BCE in honour of the
deified C. Iulius Caesar. This month is sacred to Iuppiter.

Greetings m htp:
i'm a lurker here on the NovaRoma list, being interested myself in ancient
Egypt, but finding all reconstructionist societies, esp. those who also keep
the
religion, fascinating.

This is from the Ancient Near East list from the Oriental Institute. i
thought that some of the citizens of the society might find it of interest.

May Djehuti turn His Face to you!

This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.

Today is the Furrinalia, festival in honour of Furrina. The role of Furrina
is forgotten since long, but She may have been connected to the underground
waters and the action of taking them to the light (the archaic Latin word
for 'well' was 'fur'). If so, this festival is another water festival, which
at this time of the year must be linked to the Neptunalia of July 23.
Furrina had Her own Flamen, the Flamen Furrinalis, who most likely presided
the celebration.

The month of Quinctilis was renamed Iulius in 44 BCE in honour of the
deified C. Iulius Caesar. This month is sacred to Iuppiter.
