Subject: [novaroma] Emperor's Private Battleground
From: Jeff Smith <JSmithCSA@-------->
Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 00:55:21 -0700 (PDT)
Article from "Archeology Today", forwarded by L. A.
Dalmaticus.

Ruins Reveal Emperor's Private Battleground

By Rossella Lorenzi,
Discovery.com News

July 25, 2000 — The Roman emperor Commodus might have
cultivated the gladiator skills showcased in Ridley
Scott's blockbuster film Gladiator by building a
personal miniature Colosseum in the back garden of his
villa.
Archaeologists believe that a large oval area bordered
by ruins in the Villa dei Quintili is in fact an arena
used by the emperor for private gladiator contests.

"There is a good chance it was Commodus' personal
arena. In fact, the building is connected with the
private part of his residence," Rita Paris, the state
archaeologist responsible for the excavation, told
Rome's newspaper Il Messaggero.

Commodus ruled Rome from 180 A.D., succeeding his
father Marcus Aurelius, until 192 A.D., when he was
strangled in his bath by a wrestler.

Immediately after he became emperor, he vaunted his
strength in gladiatorial combats at Rome's Colosseum.

The emperor confiscated the Villa dei Quintili in 182,
after he sent its owners, the Quintilius brothers, to
death for supposedly plotting against him. He then
began a renovation plan by adding rooms, baths, a
heating system, a thermal bath complex and the
sporting arena.

The villa, recently restored and opened to visitors,
is still under an extensive digging program.
Archaeologists think they will find the final evidence
for their claim as they get to the base of the
structure.

So far, the discovery in the adjacent area of basins
normally used by athletes for ablutions, as well as a
large, elongated area probably used as a gym, seems to
confirm the literary accounts of Commodus' arena
performances "in private."

According to his contemporary Dio Cassius, Commodus
killed men in his private gladiatorial bouts, and was
known for "slicing off a nose, an ear or various other
parts of the body."

An accomplished left-handed fighter, determined to
cast himself as "Hercules reborn," Commodus was also a
highly skilled beast-hunter who showed his ability in
the Colosseum by killing bears, tigers,
hippopotamuses, elephants, but also domestic animals.

He delighted the public by shooting crescent-headed
arrows at ostriches, who continued to dash around even
after they had been decapitated.

"The discovery at the Villa Quintili raises the
question whether Commodus perfected his skills in his
own private arena," said Jonathan Edmondson, an expert
on Roman spectacle and associate professor of history
and classical studies at York University, Toronto.

"This is a very exciting finding indeed. It is quite
possible for Commodus to have built a private
amphitheater at the villa. After all, a number of
other villas in the countryside around Rome had their
private circuses."

Subject: [novaroma] Latin Phrasebook & Congratulations
From: "M. Apollonius Formosanus" <bvm3@-------->
Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 14:10:47 +0200
M. Apollonius Formsanus N. Moravio Vadonti et alii SPD

You express an interest in a conversational phrasebook
for classical-style Latin. I am not certain exactly what you
want to say if useful things like "My postilion has been
struck by lightning" leave you cold. :-) However, there are
numerous things like this produced by the University of
Saarland. A good little one is "Latein Aktiv" by Father
Caelestis Eichenseer published by Langenscheidt. ISBN
3-468-42520-1. It provides expressions like: "I want a
receipt," "Please develop this film," "In which cinema is
the film about the eruption of Vesuvius showing?" "When will
the football game begin?" "Have you got a local telephone
book?" There are others available directly from the Societas
Latina at the University, which come with cassettes to
improve listening comprehension. Classical grammar and
phraseology with neologisms as necessary is the principle.
The language of translations is German, of course. The forms
in these books have acquired a considerable acceptation as
norms in modern Latin in Europe due to the outstanding
scholarship of Father Eichenseer, Sigrides Albert, and
Christian Helfer.

We may eventually produce one or a series for ourselves
too, depending on demand.

Finally let me congratulate the new patricians - Gens
Annaea!

Valete!

After all, as E.

all of us as
visitors could use a good phrase book. Beard's 'Lingua
Latina ad Multas
Occasionibus' just doesn't have the phrases I need, for one.
It's more of
the "my postilion has been struck by lightning" variety. I
assume there's a
parallel English text, Veni?

Failing that - Formosane, how about writing one for us? Te

dulcissime supplex?

Vado.

Subject: [novaroma] Latin herbal
From: wicachu@--------
Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 08:23:49 EDT

Salve Lucilla Cornelia Aurelia Antonina, and my thanks for your kind words :)
I do have a question for the assembled citizenry this day. My religion
involves me heavily in herbs, both the cultivating and usage of. I am
teaching my Daughter, Titiana Sententiosa Britaega
( 'Ana) the craft as well, and she has begun studying the herbal I sent
her. What I would like to find is a herbal, in Latin. Preferably one of
historic nature. I am hoping that seeing Latin used on a subject she enjoys
will spur some interest on her part to learn some. It does come in very
handy to those of our kind :) Anyone know of any in print, or a good source
for finding obscure texts?
My thanks and may all be well this day.
May what you truly seek , find you.

Iona Sententiosa Britaega

Salve, Gaius S.B. Sura;

There is currently one Tribunus Militarium Laticlavius in Nova Roma.
There are two Tribunus Civicum because that is what the Constitution
calls for at the present time, and that seems sufficient.

Since it is apparent that you have many questions, I respectfully
suggest that you carefully go through the NR Website which will answer
most of your questions, and look into joining a Sodalitas of which there
are now several, which will be able to answer your further questions
without having to wait for the Consuls to respond.

Most of the Senators and Magistrates are very knowledgable, and the
Consuls and Censors are particularly busy at this time in our schedule.

Vale, Respectfully;

Salve,

If anyone out there has some good sites, photos, etc. of roman house plans
etc. please post them or let me know. Legio VI is in the process of
undertaking a project here in the North East to reconstruct a 2nd Century
Fortress with an ajoining "locals" Village. we have the property now and We
are hoping this will become one of the premiere sites at which Roman era
recreationists can come and play. We are also going to construct a portion
of Hadrian's Wall to give the place some more flavor.

So send any info you might have and if you are independently wealthy please
feel free to contact me to make a donation to our little project.
