Salvete, Cassia and Friends;
Unfortunately the listed dates for the tentative Nova Roma Event are
taken up by a Revolutionary War Event which has been in the planning
since last October. One of the problems with event planning where there
are a significant number of reenactors is the existance of some very
long term plan in effect (12 to 18 months in advance) In my case I will
be the British Invasion Commander and Military Govenor of the small town
being taken, so my presence is required throughout the weekend. My
apologies.

Salve, Advena;
Perhaps a light olive oil for the protection and annointing of the skin.
In some cases an asbestos suit of armor for unannounced flame wars
(usually of short duration) and a variety of scented oils to draw the
gentler and more delicate members of our micronation to your side.
I suggest that you sit in the heavier veils of steam, to soften the soul
as well as the skin, and perhaps apply from time to time a salve of
patience until you learn the main players and all thier various
mannerisms (a wide variety), together with a powder of watchful demeanor
and neutral attitude.
I have always recommended to all Nova Romans a strong ointment which
limits verbal repartee of a course nature, and a soothing pot of
refreshment which calms the mind and renders immediate retaliation to
thoughtless comments unnecessary.
I hope that this array will render your visits pleasant and productive
as well as fulfilling for your purposes.

Salvete omnes,
I'm looking for any opinions on a book I'm thinking of
purchasing. It's called "Love In Ancient Rome" by Pierre Grimal.
If anyone has read it, please send me any feedback.
I'm interested in reading on the personal and private aspects of
Roman life which include sex, marriage, prostitution, homosexuality,
sexual taboos, sex and religion etc. I would like to know if this
book would be relevant.
Also, if anyone has any other suggested reading on this
particular area of Roman life, please feel free to e-mail or post.
Gratias.

Excellent!
If a movie studio needs to resort to such pathetic "advertising", and if the
poster in question is representative of the quality of personel hired, then I
think we can expect a very low quality film. Perhaps even lower than
Pentehouse's CALIGULA.

True religionists may or may not be terribly interested, but anyone visiting
the Netherlands may like to know that is a prehistoric+roman+medieval 'theme
park' situated at Alphen aan den Rijn, just a few miles/kilometres/mille
passus east of Leiden. 'My' re-enactment unit, Legio Secunda Augusta,
recently spent four days there (and we were made to feel extraordinarily
welcome, too!).
One of the buildings in the Roman section is a small temple of Romano-Celtic
type, dedicated to Nehalennia. According to the temple staff, Nehalennia was
a fertility goddess who looked after the local people and also looked after
people returning from Britannia - so I, for one, hope to return next year!
There might be more information on the Archeon (the theme park's
name)website - my Dutch is even more deficient than my Latin, so I wouldn't
know. If you're interested, you can find it at:

Re: [novaroma] 3rd century Legions |
From: |
Caius Flavius Diocletianus <3s@--------> |

|
Salve, Caius Ambrosias Valerius.
Thank you for your message. I´m sorry for my delay, but I´m a little short of
time.
There is one major problem regarding shield devices:
All shield devices, also those in the Notitia Dignitatum, are highly
speculative.
The Notitia´s shield devices were copied again and again from the 5th century
onwards and during the medieval age. No one knows if they were copied correctly,
but it´s very possible that they are not. I think that the colors of the devices
are nearly correct (you can´t make a great mistake there), but the figures on
the shields were surely often simplified or misunderstood.
Also, the Notitia shows shield devices from the early 5th century, the 3rd
century lays, as so often, in darkness. Furthermore, the devices are only
depicted for field armies, not for the frontier armies. I have a book which
depicts a few shield devices from the 3rd century, but of course, they are
speculative, too. Also, the units which belonged to this devices are not
mentioned. I will make some scans for you, but give me a few days.
Regarding the 2nd Adiutrix:
There are only some possible devices from the Notitia. The frontier legion II
Adiutirx has no device depicted. But it may be the mother unit for one of the
secundani legions and for the acincenses, Legio pseudocomitatenses in Gallia
(from "Aquincum"). But, I´m sorry, my new Notitia copy has no device for them
depicted.
I´m sorry that I can give you no more help.
Vale

Hi everyone. I have been lurking in your group for sometime now, and find it fascinating, the way you are trying to create a genuine Roman lifestyle with the distractions of a modern age. I also find the emotions, rivalries and attempts to preserve power a good recreation of Republican Rome. Much as I admire Rome, I'm not sure I would want to live there, but I can respect people who want the order and certainty that Rome (at least for much of its history) provided. Of course, there were plenty of civil wars in old Rome, like the year of four emperors AD69. Alan Massie has just written a book about this period, which is a coincidence, because my own Roman historical novel is set then. It has just been released, if you're interested you can find it at www.pulsarbooks.com/historical

I'd suggest beginning at the Didaskalia site:
http://didaskalia.berkeley.edu/
Poke around the whole site, but especially look at the 'introduction to
ancient theatre' section; there's a place where you can watch a reading
such as you would like (from Euripides). If you'd like some 'performable'
versions of Euripides, go to:
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~loxias/euripides.htm
If you'd like something more Roman (and not necessarily theatrical), you
can listen to a poem of Catullus at:
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~loxias/catullus.htm
The same site has Vergil too:
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~loxias/latin.htm
A bunch of Latin poetry in mp3 format:
http://dekart.f.bg.ac.yu/~vnedeljk/VV/
A reading of a bit of the Iliad in translation (look for 'readings'):
http://www.dc.peachnet.edu/~shale/humanities/literature/world_literature/homer.html
A small bit of the Aeneid (ditto):
http://www.dc.peachnet.edu/~shale/humanities/literature/world_literature/virgil.html
... that should get you started (I have another site in mind but can't find
it!)
