Salve Alex,

I am interested in reading your novel. I saw the excerpt of your book on
the website you mentioned. Since my little effort at a book for Nova Roma is
set just a few years before Nero's fall, yours definitely looks interesting!

Salvete,
I have been on the Internet for the past 7 years, on and off as a source of
entertainment. I have played just about every type of game there is to play
online. One of my favorite types of games online are text-based multiplayer
games sometimes called MUDs or MU*s. The vast majority of MUDs are based on
medieval times and the purpose of the game is competition. You walk around
a virtual world (in text, like a book) and slay monsters and other players.
This type of game play is called ‘hack-n-slash’. There are many more
types of text-based multiplayer games out there, but the other one I like is
called MUSH (Multi-User Simulated Hallucination).

In the MUSH environment you can build rooms and virtual objects as well as
program them to perform virtual functions. It would be very easy with the
right knowledge to program an object to act as a roman board game of some
kind. Generally on MUSHes there is no killing, simply role play. You can
build sets, as in a movie or play, and act out scenes of any complexity in
the MUSH environment. I also feel that a MUSH is a great place to spend
your online time as you can learn a lot from other people.

Recently I set up my own MUSH. Currently it is not really designed around
any theme but I was thinking of turning it Roman. I would really like some
assistance from anyone who might be interested. What I need is:

1. Someone who can build or code MUSH softcode, or
2. Someone with a good bit of knowledge of roman leisure activities.
3. Everyone else to interact with one another and make the MUSH a fun place

If you wish to help me or are interested in the MUSH thing, send me an email
at Elokk@-------- For more information on MUSHes I recommend checking
out the MUSH Manual. You can find it at this URL:

http://www.godlike.com/mushman/

Please keep in mind that the MUSH manual is VERY detailed and if you are new
to MUSHes you may want to just skim through it. The MUSH manual mainly
covers coding MUSH objects.

If you want to try the MUSH then connect via telnet to:

Salvete omnes,

I was thinking about the current movement to encourage further
interaction and communication among the nova romani and a question
came to mind. I had never thought of it before, but it struck me to
ask, out of curiosity, does Nova Roma have a capital? I say capital
to mean any form of a central nexus or nerve center for our political
and social organization, be it a physical locale or a designated
center.
Just a thought.

Ave,

Currently we dont because we dont own land. :) I am sure once we reach that
great period when we actually purchase or acquire land, that would be our
capital. :)

Salve, G. Metellus Valentinus;

That is an interesting thought. I cannot be as sure as the Senior
Censor is, of course, as he has much more experience in Nova Roma than
I, but in listening to the citizens of Nova Roma and thier views and
discussions, I would have to say that the closest that we come in Nova
Roma to a nexus of our thoughts and efforts is Rome herself.

I defend my above comment with the following obsevations. It seems to
me that the hub of thought in a micronation such as this cannot be
determined by a single person or group of persons but rather must be a
feeing that gathers its strength from those of us who feel the feelings
and grows amongst those who are dedicated to the idea. Not just a
political idea or to a miltary idea, or to a commercial idea or a
religious idea not to say that those ideas are not important, but rather
to the whole idea of belonging to something or somewhere.

Certainly each of the great Provinces of Nova Roma possess cities of
extraordinary beauty and grace. Lisbon and Funchal stand out in my mind
as places that I long to return to for the beauty of the city and the
people. Alexandria, and Berlin were fun and Amsterdam was a wonderful
place of canals, and bright lights and instant friends. There are the
old cities of Eastern Europe which I have not had a chance to visit,
which I have read about extensively and hope some day to visit, but
still Rome is where my ideas begin and end in my Roman view. While I
probably have not reached that point yet, I aspire to be a Roman in
thought and deed, and to claim some small success in the Roman Virtues
as well as in the thoughts of the great military and political figures
of the Republic and the Empire who were thoughtful, dedicated and
carried forward the glory that was and is the legacy of the Roman World.

In relation to that thought, the most that I see on the internet, and
the place where ideas begin and end seems to be Rome. Rome has a
mystical aura about her, which is fleeting to anyone actually going
there. I spent 10 days in Rome twice in my life, and at first it seemed
like just another large European city to me, and as I walked the streets
and visited the famous places it seemed to grow in stature and beauty
and the scale of years seemed to fall away While the noise and bustle
of a modern city, is still very much a part of Rome, it seems that there
is another shadow city that lies beneath the actual physical city that
softens the harshness, and allows those who are really interested to
view the city and the long heritage of her history in a softer light.

I know that my view is one of a romantic, except that I am not known as
a romantic person at all. I did not sense the same feeling in Athens,
nor in Iraklion, Crete, or even in London. Athens was impressive,
Iraklion mysterious and very strange and old, and London dear old
London, can't get enough of, but----------Paris and Naples did not
effect me that way either. Perhaps Edinboro, Scotland came the closest
of all but I have memories of distant relatives who have honors in great
places in that city and that too makes a difference.

No, I think that there is only one place that all Romans who feel that
they are Romans in thier heart look to, and that must be Rome. It is
perhaps that idea that restrains us as a micronation from actually
deciding upon a physical place within Nova Roma, because the place in
our hearts is Rome, and no place can ever take over that idea, or that
desire.

I suppose these thoughts can be dismissed as nonsense, and the ramblings
of a hopeless romantic. There are those who have said in the past that
all I do for Nova Roma is write strange messages and that may be true as
well. But I must say that your question appeared to be one whose time
had come for me and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. I would
like to hear the thoughts of others in this respect as well, but I am
afraid that for now my friend, I must personnally opt for the Eternal
City, and believe further that there are many who would agree.

Vale, Respectfully and with Thanks for your question;

Lionel Casson's renditions of Plautus (Amphitryon and Two Other Plays;
The Menaechmus Twins and Two Other Plays--both put out by Norton Press,
both usually easy to find at your local secondhand-book store) are
eminently readable, and thus I suspect eminently performable as
well--not to mention hilarious! Casson also wrote a more scholarly
work on Roman comedy in general, whose title unfortunately eludes me.

To add another to your growing list of sites, you might want to take a look
at

http://artemis.austinc.edu/acad/cml/rcape/comedy/

I can't remeber how I came across it, but it contains the text of Plautus'
Curculio, which is a short comedy. The text has been conveniently divided
into acts and scenes (I'm moderately sure the ancients either didn't do
this, or at least didn't indicate such divisions in the text). There is also
some introductory information relating to Roman theatre.

hope you find it useful

Salve,

Ramblings? Not at all. I really appreciate your response. It
was food for thought. I think that Rome, the living breathing
eternal entity of the great Italian city, would definitely be our
spiritual center, our Mecca so to speak (no offense to any muslim
citizens).
I haven't had the fortune of traveling much, let alone outside
of the US. Rome has always held some magnetic pull on my psyche, my
soul (now I sound like a rambling romantic). I think when we try and
explain WHAT that is, it comes out as "romantic" rambling, but then,
anything ethereal or intangible that speaks to the soul is looked on
in that sense.
I've wondered why Rome has this hold on me. I've never been
able to explain it. On my mother's side, I come from Spanish/Catalan
ancestry. My grandmother's Catholicism had this deep ritualistic
nature to it that had nothing to do with christianity and more to do
with Roman (i.e. Latin) customs. The small altars of saints in her
house where she prayed daily and burned incense. Even her surname is
tied to the cognomen of a Hispanic Roman family.
These might seem like little things, but I've always looked for
any tenebrous connection or tie that would explain the pull that Rome
and it's culture has on me.
In any case, I hope I didn't stir too much meandering thoughts.
I look forward to the day when we can reaffirm our ties to Roma Mater.

Ave, G. Metellus Valentinus

Salvete,
I love some of the topics that come up n this list. Simply reading it is
extremely entertaining. I have some thoughts on the capitol issue.

I think there is no way we can consider getting a capitol at this point.
First off we would need a much larger population. Next, we would need land
and looking over last years budget, I don’t think we have quite enough in
the treasury. Lastly, we would still have to pay a tribute to whatever
nation would govern the land that we ‘owned’.

I think the best way to begin, however, is like are doing now. Slowly
obtain members who hope for the prosperity of out nation. Over time we
should have enough political force to get some things done.

As far as where to place the capitol, I am quite fond of Italy. I have never
been there in this life, however I think it only suits us to be located in
the land of our fore bearers. Also consider, where ever we go it must be
away from the United States. Although I love the United States and I was
born here, the political power of the United States is sure to overwhelm us
if ever we get on their bad side.

In our current state, even the smallest nation could easily destroy us. I
think, therefore, that peace is the best method toward getting a foothold in
the world. For who would annihilate a peaceful people who only wish to live
as they choose.

I think that if ever we possess the ability to scrape together more then
180,000 per year, we might consider attempting to join the United Nations.

Just my thoughts on the topic, apologies if I ramble, I appear to think in a
rambly manner.

Vale!

( let us live and let us love )

My heart is heavy, all this discourse and sentiment has induced my tears. Nescimus quid facturi simus, ( we don't know what we shall do )
I am longing for my youth in the orange groves near my fathers house.
The delicate Nymph whom I loved and lost, was given to someone else
She was given to a nobleman her own age, times three.
We met in the grove once more for an innocent encounter, which, was misconstrued by her debauched protector.
Now she is exiled to an Island for a solitary life, with no prospect of escape, and I shackled, to a heavy heart.!
