My cat Zenobia (yes, named after the ancient Queen of Palmyra) was
pleased when I told her about this.

For centuries, the Romans captured lions and tigers and forced them
into careers as fighters in the Colosseum. It's rather poignant to
think that their feline cousins have won control of the place.

I would agree with Fabius. Our Rome is a time as much as a place, and I'm not
sure modern-day Italy would ultimately satisfy a bunch of anachronistic time
travellers. I haven't been to Italy, but I've lived in both Europe and the US,
and I do prefer to live in the US but yearn to (hopefully) visit Rome. But when
I do, it will be with filters on to focus on that layer, deep down, that was the
ancient city. How much of the medieval, Renaissance, and modern city will I
see? I don't know.

THE INQUIRY

Chapter VI --- A Slap In The Face

Cassius' thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Aeternia's voice.
"Gaius, we have a problem. I found Lauria."
"And?", asked Gaius.
"And she's...well, maybe you better come see for yourself."
He rose. "Excuse me for a moment, will you, Cassius?"
"I'm coming with you," Cassius said flatly. "You are not leaving me alone in
this place!"
Aeternia led them to one of the empty side rooms, where Lauria lay
unconscious on the floor. An empty cup lay beside her. "Oh no," Gaius
sighed, picking it up. "How much has she had tonight?"
Aeternia shrugged. "No idea. I only found her here a moment ago!"
"Well, we can't very well leave her here in this condition, not with these
perverts about."
"Did someone call?" The last voice was belonged to Sulla, who appeared at
the entrance. "So this is where you two went. I heard someone say
'perverts' and I...oh dear! Is the girl alright?"
"Sulla, where can we put her?", asked Gaius, concerned.
"Well, I suppose you can drop her off in the guest room upstairs, at the end
of the hall. You remember, the one into which we had to carry you last
month?" Gaius shot an annoyed look at Sulla, then shrugged. "Yes, Sulla, I
do." He carefully picked up the limp and defenseless girl, and looked to
Aeternia. "Tink, can you stay with her? I don't want her upstairs alone.
Not with Sporus up there." But Sulla shook his head. "No Gaius, she has a
customer waiting in her chamber." Aeternia sighed. "I'm sorry Gaius. But I
need the money."
"I understand," he replied. "But we need someone to watch her."
"Easily fixed!", said Sulla. He clapped his hands, and called for one of his
servants. "Formosanus!" The servant, a transvestite complete with earrings,
makeup, wig, and a matronly woman's gown appeared. "Yes, my master!"
"Formosanus, go with Gaius while he takes this girl to the guest room. Then
stay with her for the rest of the evening. No one other than Gaius,
Aeternia, or myself is to be allowed in the room."
"Yes, master!"
Gaius was worried, and still holding the unconscious Lauria, he approached
Sulla and whispered, "Can this man, er,...uh, can this person be trusted? I
mean, he isn't going to take advantage of her, is he?"
Sulla patted him on the arm. "Not to worry! I castrated him myself!"

Aeternia's chamber was dark, lit only by two or three oil lamps. She
had cushions for her to recline on, while her worshippers did her homage.
But as her customer, the wizened old Piscinus peered in though the beads
hanging over the entrance, she was standing with one foot propped up on a
stool, and her hands holding her waist. "Excuse me," Piscine said, "but are
you the Mistress of the Forbidden Pleasures?" The Mistress growled like
tigress. "Oh yes!" the man snswered, "I can see that you must be! My name
is Piscinus, and I am in need of a spanky. Do you do spankings? Aeternia
took her foot away from the stool and walked over to him. Grabbing him by
the nose, she pulled the man into the room. "You are not here to ask
questions, slave", she barked. "Oh goody!", he squealed, and then went on,
"Most people do not like discipline, but I have always enjoyed it myself. I
think the world needs more strictness and discipline, don't you Mistress?"
He then howled in pain as she stomped her foot onto his toes. "You will not
speak unless you are spoken to!" "Understood mistress!", he whimpered. She
then walked around behind him, and taking him by the shoulders she thrust her
knee into his leg joint. "On your knees!", she ordered as he dropped to both
knees on the hard floor. "Ouch!", he cried. Aeternia walked back in front
of him, and put her sandled foot back on the stool in front of his face.
"Kiss!", she demanded, and Piscinus obliged by kissing her big toe. She
slapped his head. "Not that one, you little toad. The little one!" He
immediately obeyed and moved to her pinky toe, and at that moment, Aeternia
bared her shoulders and let her dress fall to the floor, revealing her supple
body, covered only barely by a few strategically placed strips of leopard
skin. Piscinus' eyes looked up, and his mouth dropped open. "Oh my!" She
slapped him hard across the face and snarled, "How DARE you look at me!" But
before he could avert his eyes, she smiled sweetly. "Do you think I'm
pretty?", she asked.
"Oh, yes my mistress".
"I think I'm pretty too!", she giggled. And then her smile vanished.
"Pretty pissed off!" The foot he had been kissing kicked out, sending him
sprawling with a groan to the floor. "On your feet, scumbag!", she screamed,
hauling up by the scruff of the neck. Then she slammed him frontally into
the wall, and began fastening his wrists with the shackles hanging there.
This done, she picked up her whip from a table. "How do you like your pain
cooked?", she asked, "raw, medium, or excruciatingly well done?"

"Leave us", Sulla said to Formosanus. The servant left the room, and
Sulla and Gaius stood there, looking down on the girl they had carefully
placed on the bed. Sulla sighed. "Poor girl. She just can't hold her drink,
not like the others."
Gaius sat down on the side of the bed and took her hand. "I know" he said
quietly. Sulla looked over at him. "You are very fond of those girls,
aren't you?"
"Not really. I just want to see that they're safe." Sulla looked bemused.
"That's all?", he asked. Gaius looked up at him. "I understand this one.
She loved her father, and he died before she was ten. Her step father threw
her out of the house. Took her family away from her."
"Yes, I know", said Sulla. "But it was all so legal and moral, wasn't it
Gaius! The same noble Roman morality which allows a father to screw
prostitutes allows him to throw his daughter out of the house for loving the
wrong boy. Probably at least half the girls who work for me have similar
stories. But you have not answered my question yet."
"I did", Gaius insisted. "I told you already. I understand her."
"Oh? How so?", Sulla asked.
"Well, she lost her family, and I lost mine."
Sulla shook his head. "Come now, Gaius. You cannot compare your life with
hers. Your parents died while you were still young. But they loved you.
She lost her family because she was rejected. You have never experienced a
real rejection. There is no comparison between the two of you!" Sulla
playfully slapped Gaius on the head. "You are a very bad liar!"
"Oh really?"
"Yes, really! And I will tell you why I think you are so protective of them.
Because ever since you discovered Arsinoe's body you have been steadily
walling yourself off from people who would be close to you. Oh yes you did!
Don't deny it. You pushed your friends away, left your home, and have been
hiding clear on the other side of the empire, hidden behind your own stone
wall. And somehow or other, these two girls have managed to push aside one
of your stones, and poked their heads through to see who was inside. And you
love them for it, even if you cannot bring yourself to admit it."
Gaius smiled and shook his head. "You think you know it all, don't you
Sulla?"
"No, Gaius, I never said that. But when you have run a tavern as long as I
have you learn a lot about people. I've seen just about everything, from the
well known man trying to hide in the crowd, to the little man pretending to
be someone. And you are not the first man I have known who tries so hard to
appear to be the detached cynic with a heart of marble."
Someone knocked on the bedroom door. "Yes?", called Sulla. Draco's
voice answered. "Ah! I was told you were up here somewhere! Gaius, Cassius
is practically begging for us to leave now! I told him I would go if we
could take the wine with us! Is that alright with you?" Gaius rose to
leave. "I'm coming", he replied. The he turned to Sulla. "Make sure she is
safe tonight, will you?"
Sulla nodded. "Have no fear. She will be fine."

Piscinus, his face bruised, red welts on his back, and Aeternia's teeth
marks on his rear, somehow managed to stand up. "Well Mistress", he said
happily, "I have never enjoyed myself so much as I have tonight. I am
certainly going to recommend you to all of my friends!" Aeternia's popped
open wide and she nearly gasped. "Oh god...you mean there are MORE of you?"
"Oh yes!", giggled Piscinus, "And I can't wait to tell them all about this!"
He dropped the ten denari on the table and left, a very satisfied customer.
Aeternia shook her head ruefully. "Damn sicko!", she mumbled.

"She's the sweetheart of the Av-en-tiiiiiiine!", sang Cassius.
"And my heart so longs to make her miiiiiiine!", sang Gaius. And then Draco
chimed in, "Though she has an Olympian behiiiiiiind!" "Damn it Draco, that
isn't how the song goes!", Cassius complained, irked. "I can't remember the
words!", Draco protested. It was but a few hours till sunrise, they had just
arrived at the house Cassius had rented, and they were
all pleasantly intoxicated. Gaius wobbled precariously in the saddle of his
horse. "I can't believe you forgot the words to 'Sweetheart of the
Aventine'! It's...uh....let me think a moment...damn...maybe you had it
right." "Oh, lets try it again anyway", Cassius suggested. They cleared
their throats, and thus the cacophonous row began again. This time, an upper
window of the house opened, and Justinia's face peered down at them.
"Aaaaaaauuuuughh!", creid Draco, "A harpie!" Justinia sneered, and called
back into the house, "Patricia! They seem to have made it home!" "Uh oh!",
mumbled Cassius as he stumbled from his horse. "I think I'm in trouble!"
Patricia stumbled out of the house, and when she saw Cassius' condition,
grew alarmed. "Cassius? Oh my, what have you been doing? Gaius! Where did
you take them?" Cassius hugged his wife and tried to appease her. "It's
alright love. It wasn't Gaius' fault. We might have left earlier except
that this prostitute passed out, and..."
"Prostitute!", cried Patricia. "What were you doing with a prostitute?"
"Nothing! We just went to a party at Sulla's house, and..."
"Sulla?!? Oh gods...."
"Wait a moment", Cassius continued, "we went to Sulla's and nothing happened,
except that Draco met a dominatrix..."
"DOMINATRIX?!?!", Patricia exclaimed. "What were you doing with prostitutes
and dominatrixes?"
Cassius was thoroughly irritated. "If you would just let me finish!" Draco
stepped in to help. "Patricia, really, nothing at all happened. We got a
little drunk, that's all! We made sure Cassius was well behaved. We were
just having fun."
Patricia held up her hands and shook her head. "Alright...no more now. Come
inside. Tell me in the morning." She took Cassius by the arm and led him up
the walkway to the house. At the doorway she stopped. "I'm disapointed in
you, Gaius!", she said sadly. Then, she and Cassius went inside. Draco
patted Gaius on the shoulder. "Don't worry", he said. "I'll make sure she
understands. It will be alright." He turned and followed them inside the
house.
Only Justinia remained in the doorway, and she looked at Gaius with no
expression. She looked at him for a several moments, saying nothing. He was
about to take the horses and leave, when finally she spoke. "No, wait.!" He
stopped, and she came to him down the walkway. "Wait a moment. Let me look
at you!" She looked him up and down for a few more moments, and then slowly
shook her head. "Gaius Lupinius Festus. Gods, aren't you a sight! So this
is what the last of the noble Lupinii has come to, after rejecting his home,
his birthright, and his country." Her acidity stung him, but before he could
think of something to say, she continued. "Dressed like a barbarian. You
had to show yourself to Cassius this way, to throw into his face your
rejection of us."
"That's not true", Gaius protested, shocked by her attack.
"Oh, please do not insult my intelligence with that crap!", she responded
angrily. "When you just packed up and left the way you did, you told us in no
uncertain terms just how little you thought of us!"
"Justinia, please!", he pleaded, shaking his head. But she was not to be won
over easily.
"Oh no? Am I so wrong? Then please enlighten me!"
He bit his lip. "Rome was unsafe for me."
She laughed. "No less safe than for any of the rest of us! It was your
home, your inheritance, your pride! Gaius, you had no idea how proud I was
of you and Cassius when you donned your togas and when you entered into your
father's seat in the senate. Aside from Cassius, I had never felt such pride
and tenderness for anyone as I did towards you then. Why did you do it,
really?" He turned away from her. "Because Rome is a place where you can
survive only if you bend over and let the emperors and their disgusting
sycophants screw you up the.....damn it." He slapped one of the horses whcih
snorted and backed away. Gaius smirked, "Well, you look like you are doing
well for yourself Justinia. Perhaps you already let them!"
She slapped him, and the suddeness and the sting left him shocked. Justinia
was in tears now. "Don't you ever, ever say that to me!" She slapped him
again, and Gaius slowly, numbly, raised his hand to his burning cheek.
Justinia was choking back her tears. "Don't you DARE say that to me", she
cried. "When my husband joined with Messallina and Silius in their plot to
overthrow Claudius, the emperor had him executed. The man I had lived with
for five years! And he would have had me killed too. Were I not my
brother's sister, I would be dead. You think you are the only one who has
lost someone close to him? Arsinoe was our friend too, Gaius! And when my
husband was killed, and when I needed support, where were you? Where was my
childhood friend, Gaius Lupinius Festus, the man I was once so proud of! Out
on the other side of the empire, drowning himself in wine and self pity
because he once lost someone! Well, may the gods damn you Gaius Lupinius!
Damn you to hell and back!" Justinia covered her mouth, as if she was
horrified to have said such a thing to anyone, and then she turned and ran
back into the house.
Gaius made no response, and only watched her as she entered the house and
shut the door.
As he began to ride away, holding the reigns of the other horses as well
as his own, Cassius came running up behind him. "Gaius! I overheard. I am
so sorry Gaius. She's wrong."
"I'm not so sure she is", was his response.
"No, no...she is just very upset. That's all. I'll talk to her tomorrow.
She'll be alright. But you...will I see you tomorrow?"
"What time?"
"Just come at noon. Porcius Festus office. I'll make sure the guards know
you are coming. Please come!"
"Alright Cassius. Noon it is."
"Wonderful! I will expect you."
"Very well."

Gaius walked up to his bedroom, tired, still not quite sober, but in
numb. Justinia's outburst had unsettled him, forced him to look into
himself, to see if she might be right. Of course, Justinia did not know
everything. She did not know the circumstances of how things came to be the
way they were. And she could sleep soundly at night.
He picked up a mirror and looked at himself, illuminated only by the oil
lamp, his one light. His brown hair had been starting to show signs of gray,
and his bloodshot eyes and wasted expression made him throw the mirror aside.
She was right about one thing for sure. He would be a shame to his
ancestors. He had already been a bit of a blacksheep of the family, a
disapointment to his father. But this life of wine and prostitutes would
have his father so ashamed that it was perhaps good he had died long ago.
Gaius plopped down on the bed, again not even bothering to get out of his
clothes. Too tired, too worn out. He just lay there, allowing himself to be
hypnotized by the candle, and slowly entered that area between sleep and
wakefulness. Voices, inaudible" could be heard, and fleeting visions of
dreams flashed before his eyes. In this dream state, one voice began to be
heard, a voice from the past...

Fifteen year old Gaius was shaking, trying not to show fear, but
failing, and the monster saw it. "Look at that man over there, boy. Look at
him! All I have to do is nod, and your throat is sliced." He tried not to
look at the monster. "You tell, you die. I can reach out and crush you,
wherever you are, boy!" He heard the monster laugh, a disgustiung little
giggle. "Now, whose little girl is this?"

Gaius woke up feeling breathless. The muggy air of the room stifled
him, and he got up and fumbled for the little statuette of the Winged Isis
which Julia had once given him. He kept it on his nightstand, Isis with her
outstretched wings, hoping She would protect him from...her, it, whatever.
It would not enter the room, he hoped, if his Isis was there. But she could
not protect him from the breathtaking atmosphere of the closed room. It was
unhealty, heavy, and he slowly realized that it was the musty smell of damp,
wet earth, as if a grave had been opened. He ran to the window and threw it
open to let the sea air in. In a moment, he felt relaxed and calm. Until he
looked down from the window.

And was too terrified to scream.

It stood there in the moonlight. It's face was bruised, with burn marks over
it's body, and blood trickled from it's legs. But what Gaius Lupinius Festus
could not help but notice was it's eyes. These eyes had once scanned for
friends at play, watched for father to return home, and gazed at the treats
offered in th marketplace. Now, they were lifeless, and stared up at Gaius.
It was the dead, pale face of Arsinoe. She said nothing, but only stared
sadly up at the man in the window. As he watched in mute terror, her hand
extended out towards him.

I am a Folkish/Tribalist Asatruar (Germano-Nordic Heathen), who gives Honor, Respect and Worship to the Holy Æsir
and Vanir os Æsgard. Being F/T basically means I believe that each Tribe of Man has Holy Ones who look after them and
are as Family to them, and that each of us should look to our own Heritage first before plighting Troth to "foreign"
Gods.
Would I turn my back to one who truly believes that my God call to them, in spite of their non-northen European
ethnicity, nope; only the Gods know to whom They speak. I also believe that as the face of Man is wondrously infinite
in its variety, so must be the Face of That Which is Holy.
Diversity, difference amongst peoples, is good. It takes a mix to build a society, just like it takes many
different stones to build a strong wall. The Fringeists be damned.

Any attempt to define a culture as broad as that of Roma Antiqua (or Nova) by any one facet is facile at best and
just plain nastiness at worst. Besides, with all the invasions and migrations over the past millenia, who can say with
complete certainty who all of one's Honored Ancestors may have been? I can't.
An interesting topic indeed, and one we in Heathenry confront all too often, and one with which any group of people
must come to terms.

means I lead because I lead, you do not lead because I
lead. Ago has a few other tranlations besides lead,
but it basically means to set in motion. I am but a

Subject: [novaroma] Latin Notes
From: "M. Apollonius Formosanus" <bvm3@-------->
Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 08:51:48 +0200
Salvete Omnes!

I would like to announce for those of you who have been following
the NR Practical Latin course, that I have just uploaded a WAV file
to the Latin Materials folder on the Novaroma list-site at eGroups.
It gives the six vowels of Latin in their long and short forms, the
short forms first. So what you hear on it is: a, á; e, é; i, í; o, ó;
u, ú; y, ý. It is only about fifteen seconds in length. The lesson on
consonants and accent is coming soon!

There has been some talk of the Nova Roman capitol and capital.
Which is which? "Capital" is from the Latin "caput" (genitive
"capitis") meaning head. It is in Latin as in English used to mean
the "head city" (exactly parallel to the use of head in German
"Hauptstadt"or Chinese "Shou-tu": "Haupt" and "Shou" mean head.)

"Capitol" is from Capitolium, the Mons Capitolinus or Capitoline
Hill in our beloved Roma. Capitolium is also the name of the temple
of Capitoline Jupiter (Iuppiter Capitolinus) on the Capitoline. And
of course in America, Capitol Hill is that on which the Houses of
Congress are built. Thus, in both Roma and Washington the Capitol is
in the capital. The ultimate origin of "Capitolium", however, is also
"caput".

Vale!

Subject: [novaroma] Villa dei Quintili - Via Appia - Roma
From: "Marcus Attilius Regulus " <m.morgantini@-------->
Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2000 09:40:39 -0000
Marcus Attilius omnibus salutem dicit.

Hostilio ,dove si combattè la sfida fra gli Orazi ed i Curiazi;

HERCVLEVS ROMANVS EXSVPERATORIVS AMAZONIVS INVICTVS FELIX PIVS !!!!!)

pitture policrome. I pavimenti erano in marmo colorato e granito,
a Roma!

Papa Pio VI°. Tali lavori arricchirono i musei Capitolini.

amava ritirarsi in completa solitudine a meditare.
venne definito Teatro Marittimo.

vestigia dell'antica nostra amatissima Roma.

Con amicizia.
Marcus Attilius Reg.

Marcus Attilius omnibus salutem dicit.

archeologiche dell'Urbe.(in particolare Colosseo e Foro Romano)
quindi prego nessuna ironia in merito.
salvati dall'abbandono.

Viva i gatti di Roma!!!

Con amicizia.

Salve Marce Attili,

Very interesting! I had heard that Commodus had the Quintili
brothers assasinated because he coveted their villa.
The period of the Antonines has always been interesting to me. It
seems as though it's the time from which Rome begins its decline.
Non parlo italiano, but I understood perfectly. Parlo
franchesi, espagnole, portuguese poco (thank god(s) for our Latin
roots!)
Gratias tibi ago.

Thursday 17 PORTVNALIA / Ianvs nefastus publicus

ante diem XVI Kalendas September
The Portunalia

This day (NP), is for special religious observance.

The Portunalia is a festival sacred to Portunis, an alter-ego of the god Janus. The temple of Portunis was built at the port on the Tiber, and This is one of these called the Tiberinalia, or the festival of the Tiber river, as Portunis is the god of the Tiber. Portunis is also known as the god of keys, or the opening of locked gates, while as Janus he was the god of doors. On this day old keys were burned in the hearth as a sacrificial offering.

Hail citizens,

At the risk of sounding boring, here's a short as possible reply to the
latest subjects that I feel I may have something to add to.

Structor; yes, why not let return the bacchanalia? That seems like a good
idea to me :-).

On the topic of the capital, I agree with the views of the Senior Consul
and Piscinus.

And on another note, I bid a heartly welcome to the newcomers that have
seemed to wash upon the Nova Roman shores in great numbers recently! I hope
most of you will stay active within the community for long.

Salve Sextus,

I am pleased that another person shares this philosophy, without imagination
we are as lifeless as a marble morgue. All the new members are my disciples,
unincouraged I assure you.
I intend to take them bungy jumping from the nearest viaduct, it would be a
pity if some of the masonry were to work its way loose as it were.
At this point I would like it to be known that I am offering my services to
Novaroma as Sooth Sayer, or to use my proper title.
MYSTICUS SOMNIUM INTERPRES
( mystical dream interpreter )
I ask nothing only your blessings, send me your dreams and I will give you
their meaning. The Gods have seen fit to bestow this gift, who am I to
question their wisdom. ?

On the Bacchus note, I am up for the feast and festivities but have slight
reservations for some of the minor details concerning the Bacchus Cult. I
refer to the dressing of the women folk in skin of the fawn, and sending
them into the wilderness.
My wife is of a nervous disposition and could not be expected to fend for
herself, although she tells me she is keen to help in the selection
process...

EX DOMO CONSILIARIS RELIGIONIS DE CONSULIS IUNIOR

At the request of Consul Marcus Minucius Audens the following prayers and sacrifice are offered to thegods for the preservation of Senator Flavius Vedius Germanicus and Priscilla Vedia Serena from the recent floods, and for the blessing of their coming child.

"To the gods Iuppiter Optimus Maximus, Neptunus and Oceanus, and to the divine Musconetcong, whether god or goddess, Consul Marcus Minucius Audens, on behalf of the Senate and People of Nova Roma, offers through me Nicolaus Moravius Vado, grateful thanks for the protection and deliverance of Senator Flavius Vedius Germanicus and of Priscilla vedia Serena and of their unborn child, and also of their house, their land and property from the flood; for which the said Marcus Minucius Audens freely and joyfully performs through me Nicolaus Moravius Vado this sacrifice of incense, of cakes, and sweet wine, at this my lararium.

"For these things, therefore, Iuppiter Optimus Maximus, Neptunus, Oceanus and Musconetcong, be honoured by these offerings. Fiat! Fiat! Fiat!

"And to the goddess Iuno, to the Mother Goddesses of America, and to all the numina whose care is the conception, growth and wellbeing of the unborn, the said Marcus Minucius Audens offers through me the said Nicolaus Moravius Vado, on behalf of the Senate and People of Nova Roma, thanks for the blessing of fruitfulness to the said Flavius Vedius Germanicus and Priscilla Vedia Serena, and for the future wellbeing of their unborn child; for which the said Marcus Minucius Audens freely and joyfully performs through me the said Nicolaus Moravius Vado this sacrifice of incense, of cakes and sweet wine, at this my lararium.

"For these things, therefore, Lady Iuno, Divine Mothers and numina, be honoured by these offerings. Fiat! Fiat! Fiat!"

These prayers and sacrifices have been made and offered at my lararium this day.

If some kind and pious citizen able to do so would actually offer cake and wine into the waters of the Musconetcong (as I am not confident that these offerings could reach a river deity 3,000 miles away), I shall be most grateful.

Pace deorum,

Vado.

Estimado lincoln :
Espero haber comprendido tu mensaje.
Espero no malinterpretarte.
Me
equivoco
