Salve,
It is a degradation to the hallowed halls of government business that we
should first be accosted by the money lenders, on the steps of the civic
hall. I suggest the senate should deploy the Garrison of Rome to crush the
foul pestilence and thence toss them into the Tiber.

As for me, I like it. The less beaurocratization the better. But I
also strongly doubt that the magistrates will do. ;-) Till now
deptivation of citizenship and deptivation of civil rights to be
elected were the only *real* instruments of power NR government had.
And now you offer to abolish them!;-)
I also agree that the Edictum smells not very nice. It could be seen
(by an independent out-sider) this way: magistrates are just trying
to punish people who left (or will ever leave in future) to protest
against the magistrates' steps.

One of the newer members of our Gens inquired:
>... I am still interested in knowing what our
distinguished gens members are doing in direct relationship to our
fair nation. And maybe start a discussion, Mater, on how we
infuse our gens into Nova Roma. Any thoughts?
Upon reflection, I thought it may be helpful to share my comments to
family on the main list, with the view to correcting my failings and
perhaps opening some process of improvement in our Roman community
generally. In this spirit I share my reply...
A very good discussion to begin! The key to better participation in
Nova Roma is a careful perusal of the NR website, labyrinthine as it
is, to see what positions and functions may be open and suitable to
the individual interests which we have. I volunteered some time ago,
when a new member, to the Pontifical College, to represent Magna
Mater as Sacerdos/Hiereia.
Unfortunately, despite a few requests for follow-up, I did not
receive much in the way of response beyond general acknowledgement.
It is somewhat my fault that I've not badgered anyone about it since
changing my e-mail address slightly (though messages to the former
account would be forwarded by a household member). I would be quite
happy to serve Venus in some capacity as needed or really serve in
any other capacity in keeping with the volume of work I can do at
present.
I am on extended leave from my work owing to the pain resulting from
a herniated disk ... that does impose limitations, but certainly I
can take on something in addition to my small efforts in serving our
own Gens.
I'm afraid that a lot hinges on finding the correct person to
contact. making that connection, and hoping that they are diligent in
assisting your placement. There are several smaller and more intimate
lists unoffically associated with Nova Roma, such as Roman-Outpost,
also based on eGroups. If the main channels don't work so well for
you, try offering your services and interests there, to catch the ear
of someone who can help with making connection.
It seems to me that there is much to be done and many able
volunteers, and that the weak link (surprisingly or not) is in the
channels of communication. Perhaps this is a thing which should be
said on the main NR list, and it occurs to me to offer the text of my
response right there. Perhaps something can be done to set up a
clearinghouse web-page, easy to locate, to help match volunteers with
open positions, or at least better publicize such a page that may
already exist.
Do share with us (on the Gens list) your results, whether successful
or a bit frustrating!
Valete omnes!

Salve,
To go out well dressed, he checked his appearance in the mirror, and so draped the Toga on his body that a graceful knot gathered the folds, arranging them not randomly but with care, so that the sinus [the long fold below the right arm] was composed to flow down the side, defining its outline. On one occasion when he had arranged it with elaborate care, he charged a colleague who brushed against him in a narrow passage, destroying the structure of his Toga. He thought it a crime that folds should be moved from their place on his shoulder.

Salvete omnes,
I hesitate to post for two reasons. First, being a recent addition to NR, I
feel somewhat out of place voicing my opinion. However, and please correct
me if I'm wrong, the idea of free speach originated with the Greek and Roman
cultures. In that spirit I will speak. Second, I find it difficult to
express myself in a matter that is clear. It's hard to understand a person
without knowing that person. I posted once to the list about the California
E-list edictum requiring enrollment, and felt like I sounded like a hopeless
romantic or maniacal militiaman. I will try to be as brief and clear as
possible this time.
In order to understand my remarks it may help to give you a small piece of
info about my personal background. I have been very fortunate in my life to
have lived through personal loss and tragedy that I feel has made me
stronger. I think I could include my six years as a U.S. Marine in this
catagory :) So please understand , I don't intend to sound harsh. I believe
in the principle Thucydides attributed to Archidamus that the "...human
beings who come out on top are those who are raised in the hardest schools"
If I sound too Spartan I apologize in advance. But, I think the problems
some cives have with various edictum can be boiled down to a question of
priorities. Do we place the individual or the State first? Are we a club or
a Nation? Do we have the dedication and perserverance to manifest our Nova
Roma in reality, as opposed to only existing on the web.
I realize the priority assigned to Nova Roma may difer from cive to cive and
my enthusiasm and willingness to sacrifice may not be shared by all. For my
part I believe all things are possible and it's as easy to think big as it
is to think small. Finding Nova Roma was the culmination of years of
searching for me. I look forward to the day when I or my descendants live on
Nova Roman soil, serve in the Nova Roman armed forces, and participate in
the furtherance of the state religion.
I understand we want to be kind and gentle to our cives. I am not by nature
a harsh person. I have often gotten myself in trouble by being too giving. I
need balance in my charatcer, as Nova Roma does in her laws. However, my
opinion summed up briefly is this, we should examine how serious we are
about our citizenship. Then we can ask how we should legislate our
citizenship.
I feel we also need to look to our spiritual forefathers for guidance in
these matters. Are we perhaps caught up in modern political correctness?
Were the Romans politically correct? Let me assume the reply, "But they had
territory, citizens, money, and army....and we have none of these but
citizens we can't affford to chase away." Was that the attitude of our
ancestors? I think not. Perhaps we need more discussion about the attitude
we wish to have as a people. For my part it's this. We're (NR) right, we
have virtue, we will bring peace and order to the world. Unlike our
ancestors who only managed to control a quarter of the worlds population, we
hope someday to govern the whole planet.
If we have this attitude and the God's will it, it will be so. If not, I
become a better person through the attempt. What sort of attitude do the
rest of you have about NR? What sort of attitude should we have as a nation?
What do you think was our forefathers attitude?
I like the idea of unrenouncable citizenship, but as I tried to make clear,
I know I hold a hard line. WWRD (What Would Roma Do?)

P.S. Anyone get the WWRD joke?

Salvate people of Rome!
Today is important date in Western Civilization. It is the traditional date
of the Battle of Salamis (480) off the coast of Attika, Hellas.
On this day a Hellenic fleet of 300 tres (three banked) galleys (127 of them
from Athens) crewed by 57,000 men defeated an Iranian fleet of 450 tres,
manned by 94,500 men. It marks the end of the Persian/Median advance in
Hellas, effectively stopping the invasion, since the Shah of Shah, Xerxes,
loses heart after the defeat of his fleet and returns to Sardis that winter.
This is the turning point in the history of the Mediterranean basin.
Victory at Divine Salamis ensured that Asia and the East's customs and
beliefs would not dominate Western history, Hellenic thought, word and deed
would flourish. The Agora at Athens would be a place of learning, not a
bazaar, the assorted Hellenic scholars would be free to spread their
knowledge, not to be cloistered in attendance of the Great Shah. And most
important of all it insures that Rome, our ancient ancestor will continue to
expand and grow,
With a Persian victory in Hellas, the Shah's next step would be aid Carthage
(Tyre of the Phoenicians was Carthage's mother city and a Persian ally) in
conquering Sicily and once that was accomplished, who knows how Italia would
have fared. Not well I'm sure. And if Rome, Latium, and Eturia had to send
to the Great Shah, gifts of Earth & Water, and Italia denoted a satrapy of
the Persian Empire, what would have Rome become? Our history would be very
different.
So Romans, join me in raising a glass to the shades of Themistokles of
Athens, Eurybiadas of Sparta and their gallant command of many polis.
Without them, our beloved Roman greatness is but ashes, our accomplishments
mere dreams. Themistokles of Athens I salute you!
Vale!

For the democractically minded out there...
Why should any "counter-proposal" be seriously considered when the majority
already like the currect policy?
