Goodness me, to have been considered for such promotion is an honor in and of itself.
To actually have my Gens uplifted to the ranks of the Patrician Class puts me in august company indeed: Marcus
Cassius and Flavius Vedius - our founders and men I think of as friends, Marcus Minucius - a man I like, admire and
trust, Lucius Cornelius - who has likewise earned the name friend, Caius Aelius, Lucius Equitius, Quintus Fabius - the
list goes on of men and women with whom I have enjoyed helping to put form and substance to this Nation of ours. Any
and all, named and un-named, my hand to you.
I pledge to continue my efforts to help the New City become a physical as well as spiritual reality. I may fail to
meet my standards of performance at times, and I apologize ahead of time, but it is only because I have many irons in
the fire at once, all of importance to me and those they affect.
I am at once humbled and eminantly pleased, thank you.

Certainly, Feste, though I am rather surprised that you need someone to
interpret them for you. They mean that, with less than 10% of those
subscribed to this list responding, the "for"s are in the lead by a
large margin.

Salvete Quirites!
I would like to thank Senator Ericius for his idea that we have an
informal poll on the original provisions of the Resignation Edictum
and my proposal that we should indeed follow the ancient Romans in
this and say "Once a Roman, always a Roman," although permitting
"deactivation of citizenship" to avoid legal problems with the
outside world. A Novaroman returning home, i.e. to activity, would
just have to tell the censors that he was active again, and they
would change the status of his everpresent entry in the database with
a flick of the mouse.
I realise that some of us, certainly Merullus among others, are very
concerned that the dignity of Nova Roman citizenship be maintained. I
submit that by warning everyone from the beginning that, at least as
far as *we* are concerned, Roman citizenship is for LIFE would have a
sobering effect on anyone not treating it with sufficient seriousness
- and do so in a way that would nonetheless not cause problems or
resentment for anyone returning home or for the censors. We already,
as I understand it, have a policy of "Once an Augur, always an
Augur." Do we not?
I think it important that there should be *alternatives* about
controversial things like this, not just a yes/no vote on a finished
law with many different provisions inside.
So, I second Senator Ericius' call for a popular poll now on which
provisions are preferred by the silent majority of our cives. Simply
for the information of the censors and of us all.

While keeping abreast of popular opinion is an important job for NR's
leaders, I think you'll find that the "silent majority" isn't voting
because they don't care.
In general I think a lenient view should be taken towards Citizens
who
leave and return, but that those who undertake administrative duties
and then abandon them without notice should not be allowed to resume
their posts as if nothing had happened.

I like the edict as written, with one minor adjustment -- that the
six-month waiting period be waived for anyone who had resigned before
the edict went into effect.

I did not call for a
"a popular poll now on which provisions are preferred by the silent
majority of our cives."
Nor did I say we should not have one. I simply voice my opinion that
we should have a straw poll about what peope thought. I do a bad
enough time twisting my thoughts as they are on their way to my
fingers. Please refrain from doing so after they have left my hands.
Polls are a way to get a sense of what people think. Better tahn
just
going by what is said most often and loudest. But it is a faulty way
just the same. As Cassia pointed out, it does not cover those who
think the whloe schtick is a waste of time. And NO, the voting slot
labeld "I don't care" does not cover this. Those who do not care do
not vote. Same with those of the opinion, "A plague on both your
houses." It is yet another tool. And humans are tool using
critters.
We do what we can.
C. Aelius Ericius.

Diana Meridia Aurelia Civibus Omnibus Novae Romae S.P.D.
may I also, and following the example of my fellow new citizen in the
Provincia Germania Superior, Caius Valerius Opilio, introduce myself
to the list.
I have been granted the status of citizenship by our honourable
Censor Sulla about two weeks ago.
I am single, 35 years old and am working for an American company in
Desktop Publishing and translation here in Stuttgart.
I hope that within NovaRoma I will be able to further my studies of
all things Roman, particularly Roman Military, Religion and Politics -
and I shall be indebted to anyone offering me an opportunity to
become active on behalf of our Republic and the furtherance of her
goals and interests.
I am committed to my duties as a citizen and hope that I will soon be
able to participate actively in discussions in this forum. As yet I
do not feel condident enough to do so - but I have seen that I am not
the only new cives who struggles with this apparently.
However, on one subject I would like to state my opinion briefly, if
I may (I would have done so via the poll yesterday but a problem with
our server prevented me form doing so in time).
I am new to NovaRoma and her politics and therefore in no position to
judge on the basis of long-term involvement with our state, so please
forgive me if my speaking out on this subject seems premature.
I have followed the arguments regarding the edict concerning
resignation of citizenship for the last week now with great interest.
I believe I understand everybody's position and the reservations
against the edict and why they have been brought forward.
So without further ado I only wish to say that I will support the
edict as it stands. I feel that there ought to be a standard policy
on resignation of citizenship and I don't think the conditions as
outlined in the present form of the edict are too harsh on anyone
wishing to return after leaving.
I personally regard my citizenship in NovaRoma as a privilege, not a
lottery win with no strings attached - and I think that goes along
the lines of the attitudes to it in Roma Antiqua - and it should be
taken and guarded as that. No more, but also no less.
This is more or less the answer to yesterday's poll, and I hope that
I have not offended anyone by saying so.
I am very much looking forward to continued discussion and exchange
with all of you, honored fellow Cives of NovaRoma.
Valete,
Diana Meridia Aurelia

Savete, Omnes
I will be gone again for the entire weekend to Monroe, New York (Museum
Village). I have been asked to portray a U.S. Naval Commander (flag
captain) North Atlantic Blockading Squadron (Civil War) as the Naval
Staff Officer and Skirmish Narrator to the Federal Commander.
I have been absent much of last week as well, on local activities, so if
I owe you a message I will get to it as soon as possible. Meanwhile for
Sodalitas operation please conact Pompeia Cornelia Strabo, Senate
concerns -- Senator Merrulus, Consular concerns -- My Consular Colleague
Q. Fabius Maximus.
Valete, Respectfully;

Ave,
The Edicta is not retroactive. We have never kept records of how resigned
before. :) Hope that helps.

[novaroma] ATTN (Religio Romana): Kalendae Septembres (September 1st) |

Salvete omnes
This is one of the dies fasti (F), on which legal actions are permitted.
This is the day of the Kalendae Septembres. This month is sacred to Vulcan.
Today the Pontifices announce the Nonas from the Curia Calabra, after
performing a sacrifice to Iuno,
where Ianus is also invoked. The Regina Sacrorum also sacrifices to Iuno at
the Regia.
Today, capite velato, I have invoked Iuno Covella on the 5th day by
saying the traditional formula:
"Die Quinti te kalo Iuno Covella"
This day is dedicated to Iuno Regina, the Goddess that Camillus brought from
Veii. She was called Uni by the Etruscans. Her temple, just like the temples
of other foreign deities, was installed on the Aventine hill.
Today is also the dies natalis of Iuppiter Liber on the Aventine. Iuppiter
Liber is the God of Freedom.
Pax Deorum vobiscum

Salve, Diana Meridia Aurelia.
As I did with our fellow citizen Caius Valerius Opilio, I want to express my
heartly welcome to you, both in Nova Roma and the Provincia Germania.
One remark from my own: There is no Nova Roma Province of Germania Superior.
Germania Superior was an antique Province of the Orbis Romanus. The NR
Province is just called Germania.
You live in Stuttgart, so you are assigned to the Provincia Germania. I will
put your name on our citizens roster.
By the way: You are invited to visit our Provincia Germania website:
www.novaroma.de/nr/. Please take a look. You will find some interesting
information about our Province.
If you have some questions, donīt hesitate to ask them.
Bene Vale

The same problem as in all modern democracies. But it shows that NR is a
democracy.

Thatīs my opinion, too. Some citizens donīt understand that citizenship is a
privilege. But, I must repeat, if they leave and return they must make their
minds about their whole membership in NR at all. Thatīs all. The Resignation
Edictum gives them time to think about membership.
What about office holders? If they leave, they abandon their duties. They
desert. Some office holders must swear an oath of office. They break this
oath, committing a sacrilege. In my opinion thatīs an important point. So I
fully agree with Patricia Cassia. If they return, they have no right to
resume their posts.
Remember: Roman Auxiliary soldiers served 25+ years to win roman
citizenship.
