CALL TO ARMS
David Michaels aka Crispus Candidianus has arranged
with Franklin & Marshall College to have us participate in their
Greco-Roman Festival followed by a "Roman Revel"
back at Michael's Place.
On October 28, Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania,
is putting on a Greco-Roman festival, of which we are to be the centerpiece.
This event was planned last year; but we were notified to a little to late
to
become involved in the plans. This year they remembered us and have
invited our legionnaires, along with those of Legion XX in Maryland to take
part.
Dave Michael's has been coordinating this with the faculty, and
there will be barracks space (I.e., floor) available at his house, which is
also in Lancaster (bring your own sleeping bag). Here is what Dave has for
details:
Friday, 10/27, 7-10 P.M.: The advance team will arrive to set-up camp
and equipment along with whomever wants a head start on the next day's
activities; shows up at Villa Michaels, the muster point. From here,
they can--
(a) Leave equipment at Michael's place and disperse to a nearby hotel
(which will be paid for by F&M), or--
(b) Flop at Villa Michaels. He has a large, finished basement which
can house 6-10 guys (who provide their own sleeping bags).
Saturday, 10/28, 9-10 a.m. -- Advance team proceeds to F & M and set up.
Camp will be set up at Heartman Green, a large, central outdoor area,
if weather is decent. If rain "pelts," we'll forego tent setup and take up
station in the Atrium of Steinman College Center. Remaining legionaries
arrive and kit up.
10:30 a.m. Opening muster and remarks.
11 a.m. First tactical demo.
12 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Lunch, a banquet-type affair for 50+ (Legionaries,
F&M students and faculty, special invited guests), at Dissler Commons,
an indoor space near the Green. The lunch will be prepared by the
F & M Classics Dept. teachers and students. All Roman food and
recipes. During lunch, one student recently in England will do a
slide show on the Ermine Street Guard and Roman sites in Britain.
We can also do a presentation or just eat and answer
questions from students.
2 p.m. Second tactical demo.
3 p.m. Tentative -- Roman Drama/Comedy presentation (maybe a
segment from a Plautus play) by the F&M drama dept.
4 p.m. Legionary Olympics. Three events: Armor race; armor long jump;
pilum toss (accuracy more than distance). Winners in each event
get a REAL ROMAN COIN, courtesy Classical Numismatic Group.
5-6 p.m. Down time, when we just hang out and answer questions,
pose for photos, etc.
6 p.m. Closing parade and remarks. END OF F&M EVENTS
6:30-7:30 p.m. Knock down camp; tent and gear can be stowed at
F & M for evening. Transfer back to Villa Michaels.
8 p.m. Start of ROMAN REVEL at Villa Michaels. This will be an all-out
Roman theme extravaganza, featuring the Emperor Trajan and a
cast of dozens.
Wine! Food! Dancing girls! And a PLOT TO KILL OUR BELOVED EMPEROR, which
must be ferreted out by the Praetorian Guard
(Legio XX). Party till 12-1 AM or thereabouts.
Legionaries who have chosen to stay through the Roman Revel can either
crash at Villa Michaels for the evening, or proceed to nearby hotel (F&M
will pay for ONE NIGHT, whether Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday).
Sunday 10/29 -- Planning for this day remains flexible. If we desire to
continue in Roman character, we can kit up and set up camp at a large public
park adjacent to F&M. We of Legio XXIV and XX can decide whether
we want to continue to demo on Saturday, or just call it a day and head
home. If we do head over to the park, we'll probably knock off around 2-3
p.m. so everyone has plenty of time to get home.
Dave needs hear from from us RSVP so F&M knows how many rooms to
reserve--contact him at Palladium@-------- For more details, you can also
contact Harriet Flower at F&M, H_Flower@--------
This promises to be a great event in our region and Dave is working
hard to make us all welcome and show us a good time!
He needs and deserves out support!
Christmas Pageant - Call for Roman Soldier Duty
We have again been requested to participate and add atmosphere
to the Annual Christmas Pageant of the Christ United Methodist
Church at 2900 Springfield Road, in Broomall PA. The church is
located just south of the shopping plaza at the junction of Springfield
Road and West Chester Pike (PA Rt 3); two miles west of the
I-476 exit 4 "Broomall".
The dates are Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15 & 16, 6 to 9 PM.
We will join with the church's cast in our reenactment armor
(preferred) and hollywood attire, as this is not intended to be a
historically accurate event. They just want as many Romans as
they can get.
Please contact Praefectus Gallio if you can take part. This event
is right in the Philadelphia area, no several hours drive!
The Praefectus has been in contact with the Fort Mifflin Historic Site.
They have expressed interest in having Legion XXIV appear in
conjunction with a couple of the annual events. It has been difficult
trying to arrange events in the Philadelphia area. The big thing
here is Rev-War and Civ-War. Please contact me if you have any
contacts or know of any events that the Legion could take part in.
We need to expand our activities and get ourselves better known
in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
NEW RECRUITS
Two new members have joined up and have proven themselves as
worthy Roman soldiers. Unfortunately, both are some distance out
of the Mid-Atlantic region.
Mike DuBois aka "Placus" of Taylor MI; was with Praefectus
Gallio at the annual Time Line Event at Fort Malden in Amherstburg,
Ontario on August 5 & 6. He has an auxiliary persona, which is quite
welcome among the rest of us who display the standard 1st Century
legionary soldier.
Welcome aboard Placus! Praefectus Marsallas was relieved to have
some help in defending the frontiers of Rome in the northern provinces!
Daniel Collins aka "Gaius Licinius Marcellus" ( no relation to
Marsallas) from the western province of Texas was on duty with the
Legion at Pennsic War XXIX. He came onboard as a raw recruit with
his basic kit of tunic and caligae. After being outfitted with armor,
helmet
baltius and gladius from the Legion's Quartermaster; he quickly proved
himself a Roman Trooper. Though he lives in Texas, Gaius comes east
from time to time and has offered his service when he can.
Also at Pennsic was Julian Tario aka "Julianus Lucius Sevonius" of
Brooklyn NY; who was serving with the SCA Roman era unit of Darkyard.
He is also an associate member of Legion XXIV.
Troopers Hugo Brenes, J. LeRoy and Jeff Crean have come on board
as associate members of Legion XXIV. They are working on getting
their kit together. A big welcome is extended to these new Commilitonis
of Legion XXIV and we look forward to having them in Service to Rome!
.
BALLISTA CATAPULT AT PENNSIC
Kurt Suleski aka "Darius Architectus" had his historically researched
and museum quality Ballista at the Pennsic War, in New Castle PA.
Your Praefectus and trooper Gaius Licinius were proud to be a part
of the crew manning this awesome machine; which with a solid sounding
"thrump", was casting three pound projectiles over 200 yards!
The firing range area was barely large enough and great care had to
be taken not to discharge into adjacent parking lots and properties;
not to mention keeping people from straying into the machine's field of
fire. See pictures, diagrams and details of this serious weapon of war at
http://www.legionxxiv.org/lrgballistacrew
Check out our/your Website http://www.legionxxiv.org
It has been under frequent update with links to other roman legions,
suppliers and contacts, along with historical roman organizations
and data on equipment. Our "Links" pages, "Roman Names" page, "Glossary"
and "TimeLines" are quite comprehensive, along with a
Photo Gallery thru Time. Check in often !
I remain, as always,
