Subject: [novaroma] Well, THAT was one of the stupidest things I've ever done...
From: cassius622@--------

Salvete,

Patricia Cassia has re-subscribed me to the list so I can make a much needed
apology.

It only took me three hours and three emails from concerned friends before I
figured out that not only was Vado joking, but was in fact supporting my post
concerning list settings.

I don't know *what* my problem was. Sure, it had been a long day at work, but
that's not enough to justify such public behavior. All my efforts to find a
suitable excuse have so far come up empty... I don't drink, I'm reasonably
sure I wasn't under control by space aliens, etc. I'm afraid I was just being
a complete idiot under my own power! :P

I've already made a personal apology to Vado, and would like to make a public
one as well. I have consistently found Vado to be an inspiration on this
list. His postings have brought smiles and laughter dozens of times, and his
religious posts have been exemplary, and his secular posts more reasonable
than most. To assume strong negative intent on his part after all his
wonderful participation was an insult on MY part, and I'm quite ashamed of
it.

Nicholas Moravius Vado, I beg you not to lose your sense of humor over this.
We'd be much the poorer for such a loss. I can handle this bit of temporary
embarrassment, but I'd never forgive myself if I've caused the list to lose
much-needed mirth and perspective. Being able to laugh at ourselves is a true
gift.

In any case, there was something good to come from this situation... I
believe I'll be setting my list subscription to "web only" for a bit, and
take a bit of a sabbatical. There are several Religio Romana projects that
have needed doing, and cutting down the amount of mail in my inbox will allow
me to get to them. See you folks in a couple weeks or so!

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus

To whom it may concern,

Please give me more information about the toga (I am researching an article about Roman clothing for my school's JCL newsletter/magizine, The Argus). Specifically, I want to know how the stripes on the toga trabea were arranged. For example, were the stripes parallel to each other, were there white spaces between them, and was the whole toga striped or was it striped only on one edge, like the toga praetexta?

gratias tibi ago

Salvete omnes

This is one of the dies comitiales (C), when committees of citizens can
vote on political or criminal matters.

Today is the Ieiunium Cereris (Fast of Ceres) decreed in 191 BCE after
consultation of the Sibylline Books. This fast was renewed every 5 years. By
the time of Augustus it became anual and fixed on October 4th.

The month of October is sacred to Mars.

Subject: [novaroma] List Moderator

Salvete, Citizens;

You all may remember a time not too long ago when I, as Consul, opposed
the return of a List Moderator to this main list of NR. My reasons for
that opposition were based on the desire, and the hope that in our
nation, we could maintain a quiet, informative, and self-moderated
communication medium without the assistance of a List Moderator no
matter how efficient or gentle that person might be.

Certain activities on the List finally overcame my objections and a List
Moderator has come into being, and for some time now the fruits of that
moderation have been apparent.

I would like to take a moment of your time to forward my appreciation to
our List Moderator, Senator Cassia for her effort in this particular
area, and to also forward my admission that her "steady hand at the
helm" and her consistant good humor, and wise counsel has gained for us
the very thing that I wished for previously. For that effort, I thank
her most sincerely.

As most of you know, I am somewhat of a tyro on this medium of
communication, and so I am not nearly the expert in this area that some
of you are. However, I have come to recognize that in order to have a
gently moderated list where we all enjoy a greater degree of comfort and
a greater degree of freedom in our communication with each other--each
of us must give up some modicum of individual privalege to the others
for a more level playing field, so to speak. As I am the tyro, I have
admitted to, I do not know the specifics of these individual privaleges,
but rather only the collective long-term effects of such and these are,
to my mind, of a significant value.

I do not by any stretch of the imagination attempt to chastise any
citizen for commenting upon any individual aspect of these individual
privaleges, as that is certainly your right and honor within Nova Roma
to do so, but I would expect that heat of your comments would be
tempered by the success of the overall procedure and effort that we
enjoy to date.

I thank you List Moderator and Senator Cassia for your extensive
efforts, for your patience in this sometimes demanding and unrewarding
position, and I further thank you for showing me, personnally, that such
moderation can and has been successfully undertaken to provide a list
that we in Nova Roma can be proud of.

Valete, Respectfully;
Marcus Audens

Salve, Most Esteemed Colleague;

Sir, mere words cannot describe the relief that I feel at your return to
Nova Roma in a mood to continue with us. I too have long esteemed your
calming influence on Nova Roma, and your wisdom in not allowing
individuals to forget the basic importance of what we are trying to
accomplish here over the heat and supposed importance of the moment.
While we have not always agreed on individual ideas, there are virtually
none in Nova Roma who have ejoyed that privalege, due to my somewhat
strange twist of views in some areas. For all that, I value your
friendship, your presence in Nova Roma, and your reasonable temperment
far more than I can express with my poor command of this language.

In reading Vado's post to the list, I too was nonpulsed for a moment at
the tone of the message, but several passages within the message seemed
to me to be so flagarant that I dismissed them as what they turned out
to be--just a joke. However, I have a very close relationship with Vado
and perhaps enjoy some small insight into his nature. Vado's apologetic
post certainly speaks for his feelings, and I would not attempt to
improve thereon, except to simply say how glad I am that you have chosen
to remain within the bosom of the "family" that you have worked so hard
to create, guide and maintain.

Vale, Very Respectfully and with Great Relief;
Marcus Audens

Subject: [novaroma] Name of Augustus
From: "Marcos Boehme" <m_arminius@-------->
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 20:32:28 -0300
Salve

A week ago, i have read a book, CAESAR of Messie, that is a romance about the life of G I Caesar from the viewpoint of D I Brutus Albinus. In this book, are the complete (original) name of Augustus: Gaius Octavianus Turinus, that i never have seen before, in any source.
Since it is a romance, it may be wrong.
Can someone confirm this information?
