Salvete!
N. Moravius Vado, thank you, (and other who have contacted me
directly) for your welcome to Nova Roma. Your points on political
involvement are well taken. I had been reviewing messages from
earlier NR times and was (am) curious as to the discrepancy in the
number of members listed (269 today) and the considerably smaller
number participating in recent conversations. The same names seem to
turn up often, causing a this newcomer to NR to wonder what's become
of the voices of the rest of the citizenry? Also, I wonder at the
distance NR seems to travel at times from its initial self-
description. (Some newcomers to the territory might read that stuff
in order to discover what manner of folk ye be.)
I am in agreement with you, Vado, that all have a right to
participate in debate and a right to make and re-make the laws. I
only wonder, why do more not do so? (Do you frighten them away, Vado,
with your certainties?)
I do, at times, look around me in any forum, and see timid souls who
might, indeed, have an opinion, and who are yet afraid to voice that
opinion in the face of an aggressive stance taken by others. I care
little for the "survival of the fittest" concept, Roman as it is
thought to be, believing instead that it is incumbent upon the strong-
minded and strong of voice, to lend a little of their strength to the
quieter ones, to encourage them to speak up (or at least whisper more
loudly). Is it the timid ones who have slipped away from NR since its
earlier days, fearful of raising their voices lest they raise the ire
of the Vados amongst you?
Perhaps, though, it is not that some don't care about "politics" in
general, but that some don't care for the politics of the day? Or
perhaps some are not as quick of wit or strong of voice as others,
and so do not articulate their thoughts?
Is there a will in NR to draw back any members who have lost interest
in the issues of the day and simply wandered off? Perhaps this is a
matter for another, gentler, time.
In the end, N. Moravius Vado, I continue to remain a slave to the
law. This does not, please note, preclude my working toward the
betterment of that law. I may not agree with a law as it stands, I
may well work toward remaking a law, yet the law is a starting point.
Verbum sapientibus ... it is the law, Vado, that guarantees you your
right to speak also.
Tempus fugit and my studies call.
Omnes valete!

Ave,
Every citizen has an opportunity to sign up for any NR affilated email list.
Every citizen (if they are of age) can participate in political offices or
can get involved in the Religio or the variety of Sodalias that the Senate
of Nova Roma has authorized. The ultimate responsibility lies with the
citizen, if he/she wants to get involved. :) I hope that our citizens do
take an interest and become involved in any capacity.
Also, I wonder at the
> distance NR seems to travel at times from its initial self-

I am truly sorry, but I dont understand what you are referring to in this
part. :)

Well, there is a broad spectrum of interest in our citizens. Some of our
citizens are just intersted in the Religio or cultural aspects whereas some
are just intersted in Politics and government. Then we have some who are
interested in everything. So, we tend to attract all types of people. :)
The common love is of all things Roman. :)

LOL, well that has unfortunately happened in the past. And, while some of
us do need to develop thicker skins, but I think all of us must look at the
bigger picture. We are doing something totally unprecedented.
Reestablishing a culture that existed 1500 years ago. Our goals are lofty
as they are noble. But, we all have opinions, and many of them differ.
Becuase of our differing opinions conflicts do arise. Occasionally we lose
citizen, but at times we do gain them back again. Always remember, Rome
wasnt built in a day. :) In a little over 2 1/2 years we went from 2
citizens to almost 600. And, as Censor, I see NR continually growing.

Those are all possible reasons. But, politics is about as Roman as you can
get. There isnt much of a way we can make it less political.

We have. There have been quite a few citizens who have left NR to come back
again.

As many have already said, welcome to Nova Roma!
I see that you have been in contact with our estimable Propreator, Vado
(guess where I'm from?).
>I am in agreement with you, Vado, that all have a right to
>participate in debate and a right to make and re-make the >laws. I only

>with your certainties?)
Well, I'm one of those who don't often pitch into a debate. That's sometimes
because I am reading both sides and trying to decide where I stand. As a
digest subscriber, I should also add that some of our more mentally (and
electronically) nimble citizens often say what I was thinking before I get
the chance to think it!
Vale bene!
PS. Vado isn't scary (unless you spill his prize Falernian, that is) - he
just manifests gravitas now and then (unless you spill his prize Falernian,
that is);-).

Salve, Kymmee;
Well, that subject is a pretty broad one, and can and does fill many
volumes. Perhaps if you narrow the playing field just a bit, it will be
easier to answer the question, in the way that you need and desire.
I will make a list of a few of the areas of interest covered by the
subject and you can tell me which ones you are specifically interested
in. How about that? Here we go:
--Marriage and Children;
--Military Life;
--Religio Romano;
--Dress and Ornimentation;
--Roman Law and Politics;
--Literature and the Arts;
--Building and Architechture;
--Interaction between Friends;
--Roman Virtues;
--Roman Philosophies;
These are just a few areas that can be discussed at length under your
discussion topic. I am sure that my friends in Nova Roma will be able
to come up with even more.
Now which of the above topics would you like to discuss first???
Vale, Respectfully;

Salvete omnes
This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.
Today is the Meditrinalia in honour of Meditrina, Goddess of healing and
wine. This festival celebrates the end of the vine harvest. By extension,
the festival also honours Liber and Iuppiter, Gods of the vine as well. The
offerings consist of must treated with old wine.
The month of October is sacred to Mars.

My name is Titus Coruncanius Rufus. I have been a
citizen for about a week and I must say I wish I knew
about NR a long time ago. So far, this group has more
than met my needs. But I have a question. Where do I
go from here? I have surfed the whole site, I
faithfully read the mail feed, but I am lost as far as
what to next. I would love to get to know other
citizen. I have ICQ #89131054, and feel free to
e-mail. I would really like to get involved any way I
can.

Thank you for the welcome. I have enjoyed this list so far...still playing catch-up in the archives. I look forward to getting to know everyone and Nova Roma itself better.
