Salvete Omnes;
I realize it is beyond the boundaries of our period, but I was hoping one of
our Cives might have an interest in Byzantium. In particular, I am looking
for an English translation of "De ceremoniis aulae Byzantinae" by FLAVIVS
PORPHYROGENITUS (Constantine VII). I've found the partial translations at
Fordham's web site, but I need a full translation. An on-line version would
be ideal, but if someone has a hard copy, please let me know; I'm looking
for a particular passage (the "Gothic Dance").
If anyone can assist with this, please email me at germanicus@--------,
rather than on the main list. My thanks.
Valete,
Flavius Vedius Germanicus

I've just started reading this list. My main field of interest is Late
Antiquity, but that interest extends more backwards in time than
forwards. I'm not a Nova Roman (as yet) but this subject caught my
interest.
Constantine VII's book: I looked for an English translation a few years
ago for a paper but could only find references to a French translation
and, of course, a few stray bits translated in secondary works. I'll
try to find my references to the French translation (though don't hold
your breath) but I never found a copy of it. I would love to read an
English translation so if you find I would like to know where.

Salve,
Flavius work has never been completely translated into English. There was a
French Translation done, and I remember a German version that was 90%
complete but never a complete version. There are excerpts available, however
I have never seen the Gothic Dance excerpt translated into English.

Salvete omnes
This is one of the dies comitiales (C), when committees of citizens can
vote on political or criminal matters.
This is the first day of the Ludi Victoriae Sullanae, which will take place
until the Kalendae Novembres (November 1st). These games were instituted by
disctator Sulla in 81 BCE to cellebrate the victory of Sulla over the
samnites commanded by Telesinus in 82 BCE at the Porta Collina in Rome.
Until October 31st the games consist of theatrical performances. On November
1 (the day of the battle) there are circus games. The games were originally
called Ludi Victoriae, but their name was changed, possibly to distinguish
them from the Ludi Victoriae Caesaris.
The month of October is sacred to Mars.
Pax Deorum vobiscum

Ciao ya'll. Tis Mamma Brit, battle weary and even more cynical than
before, but I am alive. I have finally found a place to live in
Texas. It's more than an hour from work, but it was all I could
afford. I'll be sharing a bedroom with my son it is so small. But we
all have to start somewhere I guess. I havent had time to wade
through the posts of the past.. uh... month? I have not forgotten
Novaroma, unlucky for you all : | I'm just working 10-14 hours a day
and without a net connection at home. And that will be the case for
at least the next six months. Miss you all.
