Salve fellow Cives,

I wanted to take a quick moment and appologize for my absence from the
threads currently on the group(s).

I have been in the midst of a most hectic work thing and have 0% time to get
on line (this is the first time in a month or so now)

I appologize publicly to the Senate and the Sodalitas for not attending to
my duties to both groups, consul Audens I beg you forgive my absence as
well. I am working dilligently to fix the problem so I can be back in the
loop,

IF you should need anything from me Pompeia, Marcus, etc... let me know I
will do my best to check this on an almost regular basis now that I acutally
have access to a machine once in a while!!

Vale,

Subject: [novaroma] Re: Taxation
From: "Alexander Probus" <alexanderprobus@-------->
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 09:58:21 CET
Salvete omnes!
I have not followed that issue until the Legate of Pannonia Superior Marcus
Victorinus had not pointed out some interesting notes.
Firstly I think if there will be paid taxes in NR, then everyone should
pay. But... taxes forgiveness for certain provinces is not very well
sounding to me. More better will sound taxes values appointed on provincial
level. As for the values of taxes paid in the different provinces and
purposes on which those amounts are spent I guess it is still necessary to
discuss. My humble opinion on that issue is that taxes gathered in European
provinces need to be spent on developing NR activities there. There are many
reasons for that: many different currencies, high costs for sending money
abroad, not very perfect bank services in some countries, etc etc.
Sending taxes abroad (to the central government based mainly in Orbis
Novum) will have extremly low efficiency. So, I suggest the tax level to
be appointed on the provincial level and the greatest part of it to be
spend there, especially in the eastern European provinces.
Taxation is not the main reason I wrote all that. The main reason was to
express my opinion on penalizing tax non-payers, i.e. decreasing their
century points and thereby their vote value during elections. I accept the
existing model of voting in NR, but honestly I personaly disagree with it.
I do consider as more honest the model one person = one vote. I know quite
well the reasons why century points have been created, but I do not
consider it fair for someone to have more points because he has discovered
the NR site two years earlier than someone else. I guess all of us are not
in NR for making any career or money, but for sharing common interests,
ideas and to communicate with each other. To do that, no century points are
necessary. As for those one who do not participate activly in NR public
life, I guess the predominant number of them even do not register there are
any elections in our republic and so do not care about any points.
As I would not like to get involved into any discussions here on the main
list, I would like to ask that any responces be addressed to myself only.
Bene valeteAlexander Probus

Subject: [novaroma] Pharsalia? - Actium?
From: marcusaemiliusscaurus@--------
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 12:29:42 -0000
Salvete Quirites,

I recently came across one of the many "History for kids" websites.
This site concentrated in particular on ancient history. I had a
look at the Roman section, and from there went to the Late Republican
section.

Skimming down the page, I noticed a statement which made me stop.

"After Crassus was killed fighting the Parthians, Caesar and Pompey,
after various political arguments, fought a civil war against each
other. Caesar defeated Pompey at the battle of Actium."

Now, I might have just been far too tired, but I could have sworn
that Actium was the battle where Octavius defeated Marcus Antonius
and Cleopatra, and that Caesar defeated Pompey at the battle of
Pharsalos.

And before I sent a message to the builder of the site, I decided to
check with the 500 or so Roman historians here! So, am I being
stupid?

Thanks very much,
Bene vale,
MArcus Scribonius Curio Britannicus.

Salve Britannicus:

The Battle of Actium was indeed where Marcus Antonius and Octavian fought,
with Octavian the victor. You are also correct in that Iulius Caesar
defeated Pompeius at the Battle of Pharsalos.

The references for this information are multifold.

No you were not sleeping, the website builders and researchers were! :)

Subject: [novaroma] Non-English Lists

M. Apollonius Formosanus omnibus Novoromnis S.P.D.

Pompeia scripsit:

>When time allows, I shall compile a list of language lists, where
>civites may speak with those of languages other than English.

I have already compiled such a list, so let me save hard-working
Pompeia a little time and trouble by posting it here:

Non-English Nova Roman Lists:
________________________________________

* Français:
<http://www.egroups.com/group/NRGallia_GalliaBelgicaF>;

* Nederlands:
<http://www.egroups.com/group/NRGallia_BelgicaBataviaD>;

* Italiano:
<http://www.egroups.com/group/NRItalia>;

* Latinum (Index Sodalitatis Latinitatis, partim Latine)
<http://www.egroups.com/group/Latinitas>

The NovaomaVizantia list accepts a variety of other particularly East
European languages, although is in practice mostly in English.
<http://www.egroups.com/group/NovaromaVizantia>
_______________________________

One of my areas of academic study is Interlinguistics, a discipline
which studies how language problems are or can be solved or
ameliorated when speakers of different language communities interact.
I think that it is very important for Nova Roma that we do not
present ourselves to non-anglophones in the world solely in English.
For those who have not attained a moderately high level in this
particular language it is at each step a frustrating disincentive to
join and participate in Nova Roma and its life.

We already have additional *sites* for German and Portuguese (both
lovely sites that everyone should visit!), and Alexander Probus in
Pannonia has aspirations to prepare on-line materials in Slovakian
and Hungarian, nisi fallor. These are not mailing lists, however.

It seems that the French list managed to work with a tiny number of
participants, and I hope that our German, Spanish and Portuguese
speakers will organise lists as soon as it seems feasible. It is
important IMHO to have somewhere to talk freely in one's own
language, and to have something constantly coming down the wire into
the inbox to keep up a feeling of real community.

Naturally, as Moderator of the Sodalitas Latinitatis, I would like,
as would many of us, our Latin language to gradually play an ever
larger rôle in Nova Roman life. Having more cives who do not feel
completely comfortable in English but are very committed to Nova Roma
will help in this, as Latin should seem to become a more natural
language to unite us all.

If there are any other Nova Roman lists or sites out there in
languages other than English, could those responsible report them to
all of us? I for one would be most interested.

Valete!

Here is an unofficial, brief overview of each of the Sodalitates and
other
Interest groups/mailing lists in Nova Roma.

A couple of you suggested that the lists be put together and
published; I think that's a good idea too (obviously!!)

I have included brief explanations of the mission of these, where
they are not self explanatory, and membership criteria.

When time allows, I shall compile a list of language lists, where
civites may speak with those of languages other than English.

I don't.

The State has enough to do without trying to find enough quaestors to
allocate one to each province. Leave provincial administration to the
province itself. I was appointed by Propraetor Vado, not elected by the cives
of Britannia. It was a nice, quick and, above all, easy thing to do. Besides,
if I was a State-appointed official through an election procedure my expenses
would become State expenses whereas at the moment they are Provincial
expenses.

Salve, All;

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Citizen Formosanus for
his efforts in laying out a variety of lists and options for those in NR
who do not have English as a first language.

No-one appreciates the frustrations of not having a native language at
one's command when traveling or living in a foriegn country, better than
I do.

Unfortunately, I am one of those to whom a foriegn language is a
terrible struggle to learn. Even in my own language (English) it has
been said , that I could use some significant improvement (Grin!!!) My
travels in most countries in Europe, and the Caribbean, and those few
countries visited in South America, Africa and Asia, have only served to
make me more aware of the need for a universal lnguage such as Latin,
Esperanto, etc. Alas, such will probably not occur in my lifetime since
we devote our time and energy to so many other lesser ideals of seeming
importance. Formosanus' language List was posted on the Egressus List,
but I feel sure would be accessible to anyone from the gentleman
himself.

Therefore, I wish to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate
Citizen Formosanus in his efforts and foresight. My appreciation also
goes in full measure to my excellent Scriba Pompeia Strabo for her hard
work in the area of compiling Sodalitas and various Interest Lists
presently in activity in Nova Roma. An excellent idea, and I would ask
that both your lists be published on the NR list for the benefit of all
NR Citizens.

Vale, Respectfully;

First, if you checked my last message and the real estate site.. i made a
minor calculatioon error.. it is actually miles on each side.. but still
that is big:)..

I saw it pointed out in someone's email that taxes should be decided upon on
a provincial level.. i fully agree...

then the provincial goivernors can report to the republic level what they
are going in the province to collect taxes amongst their flock.. or
something similar..

On final note, i feel it is much better, for now, to accept only donations..
my reasonings were already pointed out by others in previous emails.. Nova
Roma provides no real services to it's members besides a theme others to
chat with.. with the exception of reinactment type events.. which i think
ought to be paid for by those involved as this is a rather select type of
entertainment that not everyone involved in NR is interested in.

So you may wonder, what sort of services do I suggest? um.. i dont know..
but i am sure that we can all think of something.. I will consider the mater
myself..
