Salvete!
I suggested this last year, but I don't know if anyone ever made use of
the idea. Could we advertise our Nova Roma flags on E-bay with the key word
"Gladiator" in it somewhere? The movie just came out on DVD and VHS here in
the States, and I understand that sales have been heavy. People on e-bay
are probably looking like mad for stuff related to the movie to give for
Christmas gifts. About 15 minutes or so into the film there was a shot of a
banner that looked just like our Nova Roma flag flying above a Roman camp.
We could advertise it as being a replica of the flag in the film and put the
dimensions and a picture with it. We could probably get more for the flags
through the auctions than they are currently being sold for. It could help
out our treasury. Maybe we could try with one flag and see how it goes.
E-bay lets you know even the unsuccessful bidders, so perhaps additional
flags could be offered to those high-bidding losing bidders who bid equal or
more to the current price of the flags.

Just a thought...

I like the idea, the problem comes in the product
tie-in you are mentioning. By mentioning that
'our' flag is a replica of the one from the movie
also opens the doors, potentially, to a lawsuit.
This is due to our associating the flag with the
movie, Gladiator, and use of the name also.

It's still a good idea ... it needs more thought
and a little more help in the marketing of it ...

So, on that thought, a different marketting
tactic, you could mention on the ebay page that
the flag we are selling looks remarkably similar
to the one that is used in the movie, Gladiator.
This would then gt us off of the hook when it
comes to statement above, "We could advertise it
as being a replica of the flag in the film," when
it comes to the legality of our association.

Consider well,

What interesting responses! I must confess to a soft spot for Zenobia
of Palmyra - I named a cat after her long before I became a Nova
Roman, and the feline Zenobia is quite sure she could take on opposing
armies if I would only let her into the yard...

I agree with Livia as the woman who most influenced the course of
Roman history, with perhaps Messalina as runner-up. Cornelia, mother
of the Gracchi, is certainly a notable example in a society where
women were valued chiefly as wives and mothers. (I was intrigued by
the point that by refusing to remarry, she retained control of the
family property.)

In this category I would also nominate Aurelia, mother of Julius
Caesar, who was looking after his interests well into his public
career. I would be interested in finding out more about her.

As for modern role models: I found an interesting reference to a
largely unknown woman, Menodora of Pamphylia, who flourished during
the middle Empire and who among other civic offices in her province
served as high priestess of two emperors and of "all the gods." She
also distributed significant sums to build temples, buy corn for the
people of her city and help orphans and children.

In other words, a woman who, gifted by the Gods with significant
resources, used those resources to honor the gods, improve her city
and help people in need. We cannot all hand out 300,000 denarii to
orphans, but we all have resources of some kind - time, money, skills,
energy - which we can devote toward similar goals.

Lest this all get too stodgy and matronly, let me also mention
Sulpicia, a young Roman who fell in love and expressed it in poetry
that survives to this day. Rome would be a sad place indeed without
love and art, and Sulpicia's happy ending reminds us of the importance
of both.

Ave,

In my opinion it should be stressed that our flag is a real flag, and in
fact
Gladiator copied our flag, not the opposite. Just look at the dates (not
talking of
Original Roma). This means we could advertise it as "the flag that has
been copied by Gladiator"
