My only worry with regards to this topic is this
...

Though Gladiator may have copied our flag ... we
do not have the right to directly declare that
they copied 'our' flag ... should we do so we are
crossing into territory where the media studio ...
who has copyrighted and trademarked the movie and
everything associated with it ... can nail our
collective behinds in a court of law ...

I would suggest that before, as an organization,
we go about making the statement of 'the flag
copied by the movie, Gladiator' that we consult a
lawyer to our use of that statement.

It is associating the flag with that in the movie
that has me worried ...

I hope this clarifies my position even more,

Caius Tiberius Scipio

Ave,

In my opinion it should be stressed that our
flag is a real flag, and in fact
Gladiator copied our flag, not the opposite.
Just look at the dates (not talking of
Original Roma). This means we could advertise it
as "the flag that has been copied by Gladiator"

Salvete! I suggested this last year, but I
don't know
if anyone ever made use of
the idea. Could we advertise our Nova Roma
flags on E-bay with the key word
"Gladiator" in it somewhere? The movie just
came out on DVD and VHS here in
the States, and I understand that sales have
been heavy. People on e-bay
are probably looking like mad for stuff related
to the movie to give for
Christmas gifts. About 15 minutes or so into
the film there was a shot of a
banner that looked just like our Nova Roma flag
flying above a Roman camp.
We could advertise it as being a replica of the
flag in the film and put the
dimensions and a picture with it. We could
probably get more for the flags
through the auctions than they are currently
being sold for. It could help
out our treasury. Maybe we could try with one
flag and see how it goes.
E-bay lets you know even the unsuccessful
bidders, so perhaps additional
flags could be offered to those high-bidding
losing bidders who bid equal or
more to the current price of the flags. Just a
thought... C Cordius Symmachus
I like the idea, the problem comes in the
producttie-in you are mentioning. By mentioning
that'our' flag is a replica of the one from the
moviealso opens the doors, potentially, to a
lawsuit. This is due to our associating the flag
with themovie, Gladiator, and use of the name
also. It's still a good idea ... it needs more
thoughtand a little more help in the marketing of
it ...So, on that thought, a different
markettingtactic, you could mention on the ebay
page thatthe flag we are selling looks remarkably
similarto the one that is used in the movie,
Gladiator. This would then gt us off of the hook
when itcomes to statement above, "We could
advertise itas being a replica of the flag in the
film," whenit comes to the legality of our
association.Consider well,-Caius Tiberius

Thank you for the idea, Symmachus! I'm not sure we'd have time to
implement it (and to follow the auctions), and I'm also not sure this
is the most effective way to publicize the nonprofit side of Nova
Roma, but ideas and energy are always welcome. If we did do this, I'm
sure we could get around the movie issue (something like, "'Gladiator'
fans can show the flag with this SPQR vexilla, issued by Nova Roma...")

As I've been using it for a school essay I'm doing on the recent
Gladiator film (both the novelisation and the film),I want to thank you
for your terrific Nova Roma site.

I've been asked by my teacher to seek out (via the Net) from Roman
Empire enthusiasts and / or fans of the film, creatively witty tips /
suggestions (which don't have to be super serious) on something -
what they'd do if they were the Emperor of Rome (though not necessarily
the same ones portrayed in Gladiator). It can be another Emperor,or
just any general clever, witty comment/s on the hypothetical notion of
just being a Roman Emperor as oneself. If you can respond,I'd be
extremely grateful. Thanks again for your excellent site.

Sincerely,

I declare my support to the candidacy of Marcus Octavius Germanicus as
Curator Aranae. During this year I have been testifying his good work as
Scribus and know that since a long time ago he already deserved to be the
Curator Araneae. In fact, I've been considering him as such, though
officially I have been holding the title.

I, Patricia Cassia, stand before you and ask once more for your vote
for Quaestor.

I have recently completed Nova Roma's application for U.S. nonprofit
tax status, have managed its day-to-day accounts and have offered the
Consuls proposals on better financial controls and on policies for
reimbursing magistrates' expenses.

Because of anticipated pressures on my time in the coming year, I
shall not stand for re-election as Curatrix Sermonem, in which
position I have served only to fill in for a previous officeholder
who did not complete his term in office.

The list moderator's job is a very important one for Nova Roma (all
the Vigintisexviri are, despite being described as "minor"
magistrates), and I encourage any Citizen of maturity, patience and
diplomacy to offer himself or herself as a candidate. I shall be
happy to lend my experience and support to the winner of this post
(on request, of course).

Ave,

I too, declare my unequivocal support for M. Octavius Germancius, he has been
my scribe for about 6 months, with his support, the Censorship has gone from
a clumsy unorganized position to well on its way to a professionally
administrative position that can be done remotely. Nova Roma has greatly
benefited from the efforts of M. Octavius. I could go on and on with his
improvements, but let me just say that when we vote, M. Octavius has my vote!
