Salvete Quiritibus!

It is with great honor that I come before you again
and welcome the newest member of the Gens Flacca.
Many of you may have already seen her post in the past
couple of days.

Her name is Gaia Flacca Severa, and she hails to us from
the city of Portland, OR in the America Boreoccidentalis
province. Like Scipio Flaccus before her, I believe that she will
be an excellent not only to our gens, but to Nova Roma
as well. Please join me in welcoming her to the fold.

Welcome mi filia!

Bene valete,
Oppius Flaccus Severus, Paterfamilias Gens Flacca

Nice job curator araneum Octavius!!

Avete,

I haven't commented much in the past within the discussions,
which may or may not have led to the several Cives leaving the New City.

I offer this to speed their journeys, though.

I would ask that, those who are in contact with any who have left,
pass this on, please.

-Faring Away-
>From Venator in Amicitia

I say fare well, to friends unmet
On placid seas, through stormy swells
Our ships have paced, each other's paths
But now the time, for parting comes

My course remains, take ship to Rome
Your path is too, by other routes
Our dreams at base, are so alike
A dream of Her, whose Spirit calls

But different, too much, somehow
And crew tempers, have flared and sparked
Too many times, set sails alight
With bitter words, beyond recall

So travel safe, upon your way
I ask your words, of blessing too
And send a note, from time to time
Your health I'll drink, and wish you luck

For journey's worth, is not all mine
The treasured goal, is Romans' all
And at the end, of voyage long
I think we'll see, we're all at home

I must apologize to you all for my calling the former Roman Piscinus a

In my new found relief, I allowed myself a personal moment and my enthusiasm
got the better of me. Those who know me, know that this rarely happens.
However because it did, it caused unnecessary problems in an already tense

It will not happen again and I hope all of Rome accepts that it happened in a

of weakness, is not my usual demeanor and I will strive to do better.

As usual with your posts, Venator, I find myself thinking "Wish I'd

Salvete Rogator Tulli et Quiritibus;

I too, join Helena in stating that this is in fact an excellent idea.
Though I'd not want to volunteer anyone, we have at least one
or two excellent graphic artists in our midst that could do something
really exciting with logos or some sort of embossed document
background.

Personally, I'm a huge believer in everything we can do to make
our membership seem more worthwhile to those who might otherwise
take it casually and something akin to 'citizenship papers' are a nice
inexpensive and meaningful way of doing this.

Perhaps as a step in the Censorial approval process, a step could be
added to export the new civis name and citizenship number into a
textual form, which could be exported or converted to a nice Acrobat
document.

So Appi Tulli, I would be happy to work with you and anyone else on
such a project. I can volunteer the services of my copy of Adobe Acrobat
for doing some test designs and so forth. I think though that we would
need some additional input from Senator Octavius and the Censores
on this, as it seems likely that such a document would be generated
at the time of approval. (Or, I suppose it could likewise be generated from
a Paterfamilias in the cases where a new citizen was joining an existing
gens.) Since we already have over 700 cives that would need a copy of
the citizenship document (if this were to be made official,) maybe a small
committee of project-level scriba to help generate the PDF files for the
extant citizens. -Just a thought.

If I can be of help in such an endeavor, please do not hesitate to contact
me. Will be happy to try a test batch and doing some bulk import/export
stuff to see what we can put together.

Bene valete,
Oppius Flaccus Severus

I thought this was a grand idea way back when it was originally proposed,
and still do today. I can see it taking three different forms (and perhaps
someone else could come up with another option):

1) A "virtual" document, which is simply a computer-generated graphic (maybe
in Acrobat format) which is emailed out to every new Citizen for them to
print out and frame, or delete, as they wish.

2) A "mandatory physical" document, which would be automatically sent out to
every new Citizen upon acceptance of their application and receipt of their
first year's taxes. The cost would be taken out of the membership fees each
Citizen would pay, or perhaps by a new one-time "Application Fee".

3) A "voluntary physical" document, which would be made available to new
(and already-existing) Citizens as an item that could be purchased once
one's application had been approved. Indeed, such a thing could have
different "levels"; a basic package just having a certificate; a standard
package having perhaps a certificate, ID card, and "What is Nova Roma?"
booklet (the old one from 1998 would have to be DRASTICALLY rewritten); and
a deluxe package having perhaps all of that plus a couple of coins, a bumper
sticker, and a new-style T-shirt.

(What? Did he say "new-style T-shirt"? Yes, indeedy, Quirites; more details
soon to come! And coins? Ayup-- Marcus Cassius tells me they're on the way!)

Here are my own thoughts on the three options:

1) I would prefer not to go this route, because it would tend to reinforce
the idea that we're an internet-based organization. Plus, such a certificate
would by its very nature not be able to be as nice as one which was printed,
perhaps embossed, perhaps in multiple colors, etc.

2) I think this is the least preferable of the three options. While I'm not
opposed prima face to a one-time application fee, I'm not sure it's
something we need to think about right now (especially since annual
membership dues-- in one form or another-- seem to be acceptable to most
folks; let's see how that goes before we talk about asking new Cives for
more money). And taking money out of the general treasury for such a thing
seems a bad idea to me, given that some people apply for Citizenship simply
because it's as easy as filling out a web form, and with no intention of any
sort of participation. Why spend money on "ghosts"?

3) Surprise, surprise; I think this would be the way to go. It has the
benefits of being both optional and scalable. Having it in hard copy means
we can do the certificates and ID cards up right; maybe even have
photographs on the cards. And hey-- maybe we could even issue our own
passports through this sort of program!

Great idea. I'd like to hear some input from the Censors on the issue; since
it would apply to new Citizens, I would think they would be integrally
involved...
