Salvete!
First of all, I'd like to say that as a new member, everyone has gone
out of their way to help me out and make me feel comfortable, and I
very much appreciate that. I have a question that I think the
community could help me with, and forgive my ignorance in asking it
because I am sure I should know the answer. Did the Roman short
sword have a specific Latin name in and of itself that was different
from the general term for sword? If so, what is the word? Also, I
would just like to ask if anyone else (high school students) was
forced to take the National Latin Exam on the Ides of March? How
ironic and foreboding is that? In relation to that, I have another
question. When addressing a crowd in the Forum, did an orator stand
on the steps of the Curia? And also, is the rostra inside the
Curia? Thank you to anyone who can help me out.
Valete!

Salve Caledonia,

I have got the answer for your first question: the term for the short sword of the legionarii
is "gladius". From the last quarter of 2. Century AD a longer sword cme in use, the term for
it is "Spatha". In the same time the shields began to become round.

Avete Omnes!

I am on the road for the next week, so thusly will be cyber
amoputated for that time.

I am attending a get together for members of an Heathen list I
moderate. We're expecting 50 to 60 out of the 240 or so US
subscribers.

The event came about as a result of one member saying "Hey gang, let's
put on a Moot!"

[Moot in this case meaning, an informal gathering with no status in
the eyes of "Official Heathenry."]

I shall be giving a talk on hunting ethics, helping to cook and
leading a ritual in Honor of my Gens Patron: Uller, the Bow Lord,
Beast Slayer and Oath Warden, amongst other attributes.

We're held together quite loosely by our various approaches to the
Religio Septentrionalis.

Nova Romans should have a stronger bond...

Vale and bona fortuna - Venator

Salve

Rostra came from Carthaginian ships after the battle at Mylae. Rostra
was not a part of Curia Hostilia but they stood near. When senator
went out from curia, he could see rostra from the curia stairs. That

Salvete,

The rostra were the bronze or reinforced oaken "beaks" of ships used
for ramming. When the consul Gaius Maenius in 338 BCE attacked the
Volscian fleet in Antium harbor, he defeated it so successfully that
he broke the power of the Volsci. To mark the completeness of his
victory, he removed the beaks of the ship he captured and fixed them
to the Forum wall of the speaker's platform tucked into the well of
the Comitia. Ever after, the speaker's platform was known as the
rostra.

The well of the Comitia was the place of assembly in the Forum and
was just outside the Curia Hostillia.
