Salve Tiberius Iucundius Maritumus Britannicus, et
omnes,
A well wrought and well written reply indeed. I shall
respond to your last question first. My only
experience of Florida was limited to a westward jaunt
across the numbingly backward Route 10. I father a
disney free household, and my sons shall remain
uncorrupted by those nefarious corporate rodents as
long as I have breath in me.
As for the bulk of your rejoinder, let me complement
you on a refreshing unity of expression.
Allow me to reply with a question: if you had to
choose between, and only between, a recreation of the
past or a Romulan adventure, what would you choose?
I shall ever offer my loyalty to the human spirit, to
the promethean endeavors of the human will. Though
Romulus was a rogue, an architect of foul rapine, and
a fratricide - he had fortune and resolve aplenty. I
favor the more difficult task of a New Rome, and the
opportunities presented in pioneering a new path to
the heights of the human experience. Broad stokes in
conception, fine strokes in application - let us (as
is advocated by the paterfamilias of the Gens
Martiana) reach ad astra, reach for the stars.
Whew, sometimes the cloying smell of my own rhetoric
dizzies me...
Still, I hold it as truth that reach must exceed
grasp. I do not, as so new a citizen, oppose any plan
which advances Nova Roma. It's just that I wish to be
counted in the camp of the serendipitous bold.
Comments?

Salvete Quirites!
If anyone is in Auckland, New Zealand in April (next week!) you may want to
pop into a couple of seminars at the University of Auckland, Classics
Dept...
Next week sees the visit of Professor Werner Eck from Köln (Cologne) in
Germany. He is a particularly eminent Roman historian and epigrapher and it
would be nice to see as many people as possible at the two talks he is
scheduled to give.
Professor Eck will be visiting next Thursday (April 5), so our seminar will
be held at 1 p.m. on that day in the Dept. Library. He will be speaking on
Caesarea Maritima, showcasing the evidence of a number of new inscriptions.
At 7.30 p.m. Professor Eck will be speaking to the Classical Association in
the Women's Federation Room, 1st floor of Old Govt. House. His topic is: The
Élite of the Empire in the Public Sphere of the Capital Rome. The World of
the Living.

Strange how reenactors of the ACW are mocked, those of
the 2nd World War are feared and those of Victorian
England get TV shows. Strange, Very Strange. :)
By the way other possible source of funding are the
Smitsonian and National Geographic Society.

Salve Iasonvs Serenvs Carolvs , et omnes,
I believe that a recreation of our past could be the
key stone in the construction of our future. I am
reminded of a poster on a friends wall in
university-the graphic was of a piece of modern
chemistry equipment within an ancient clay vessel and
the legend was- Israel, our future is in our past.
Simply change it to Roma and you have the initial seed
of my idea. For I believe that this initial foray into
the past could be the initial toe hold needed to step
boldly into the future. The key will be in theplanning
of not only the project but also the construction of
the contracts, treaties and leases needed to ensure
our autonomus status no matter where we locate.
I Remain Yours Mouse Free

[novaroma] Last Trumpet for MithraCon IV |

Salvete omnes!
MithraCon IV will take place weekend after next, and the hotel has advised me
that yes, they still have some rooms available, so if you've worried about
missing the deadline, you can still call them and get the con rate. Contact
reservations (or Amanda Hilton) at (203) 777-6221. The hotel doesn't have
email yet.
For those of you who have already reserved, please be sure that the hotel
knows *well ahead of time!!!* to pick you up if you need the free shuttle
service from either the train station, bus station, or Tweed-New Haven
airport. Which means calling them *this week*.
Still no news if we have a Yale professor giving a talk for us; will bug the
department tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed!
The hotel will be undergoing some renovations during this time, so the
function space will not be directly connected to my hotel room (which is
reserved Friday through Sunday evening, so folks can store stuff after
checkout there and leave later in the day if they want to).
We have 9 registered attendees, 4 of whom are Nova Romans (Cassius, P.
Cassia, Merlinia (Hi, Mom!), and John D. Wallace (sorry, forgot your Roman
name! Mea maxima culpa!). We're going to have a *lovely* time prowling Yale's
library stacks, won't we???
Valete for now...
