NEWS for MAY-2001 - Year of Rome 2754

Ave et Salutatio... Commilitonis

Hello and Greetings from Gallio Velius Marsallas,
Praefectus, Legio XXIV Media-Atlantia;
Tribune Militaris - NovaRoma - Gens Velia
aka George W. Metz
13 Post Run Newtown Square, PA 19073-3014

http://www.legionxxiv.org

Legion XXIV is now in Pictures!!
Owen Hutchins (Marcus Didius), David Michaels (Flavius Crispus), Fernando Bonmati
(Titus Aurelius) and John Macek from Legion XX, plus Joanne Shaver and two barbarians
from the Barony of Settmour Swamp and yours truly answered the casting call.

The "shoot" went well. We showed up at 7AM, unloaded the gear and proceeded
to dress up the 20 or so "extras" that had been hired by the producer.
It was Clear, Cold and Windy!, in the "Thirties" rising into the "Forties" in the afternoon.
Four members turned-out along with three barbarians from the Barony of Settmour
Swamp, a SCA group we have relations with. We all blew the crew and extras away
with our dress and decorum. The Emperor and Marius would have been proud of us
and the barbarians were very barbarian, hair, woud and all.

The session was to produce a salesman' promo for a drug company for their internal use.
It will not be shown in public. The producer has promised a video of the finished
product to me and others involved.

The story was as follows:
A "legion" of Roman soldiers is on the crest of a hill. They are staring out across
the landscape to the opposing army as both side prepare for the imminent battle.
We get close ups of the faces of men hardened by war....

We zip pan over to the opposing army... more primitive, Barbarian....

A shadow crosses the Roman troops and they look up with awe and smile.
A Pegasus flies over head. The Romans cheer.

The Barbarians turn tale and run!

The Romans were filmed first in various lines and positions, close-up and at a distance.
Then we had a break and I assisted in dressing the barbarian extras for their session.
The shoot was over by 3PM It was an interesting; but cold, experience.
We all earned our "stripes" as cold weather Roman warriors! We can now appreciate
what the legions in Germany and England went through almost 2000 years ago.
There were a lot of pictures taken and a few are attached below.

Check out the Website http://www.legionxxiv.org Many new pictures and text have
been added. A new Lorica Page has been broken out of the Equipment Page.
Detail photos of my new hamata by Jeff Crean will be up in a week or so along with
some shots from the recent Marching thru Time and Universal Soldier events.

There is a new major section on gladiator combat and the Colosseum.
Termed the Gladiatorium Academia. It was authored by John Ebel, who
is a very active new recruit, and your Commander. We are planning to have
gladiatorial exhibitions and the call is out for gladiator trainees. Are you up to
training for the "Games"?

John has arranged for two such exhibitions west of Boston, MA on Wednesday
July 18th and Wednesday, August 8th. Yes! They are during the week; but the
promoter is offering a generous stipend and lodging for those of us who could participate.
Contact John Ebel at 631-329-2430. He is moving and his computer is down for
a month or so.
We are also planning a session at Roman Days, June 9-10 at Marietta Mansion, in
Glenn dale, MD; with Legion XX and Legion III Gallica. 10 AM to 4 PM both days.
This IS THE Roman event of the year and we should all set the dates aside.
Roman Olympics! Battle Tactics and Demo! NovaRoma Meeting.
Last year we had 15 troopers! - with our support it can be twenty!
So get to work on your kit, turn-out and show your pride in Ancient Rome.
There will be some extra gear available. See below for directions.

Legion XXIV will again be campaigning with the Barony of Settmour Swamp at their
Annual Gathering and Quest on May 26-27 near Flemington, NJ.
There will be good times and much fun.
Calling all gladiators!! Maximus-Ebel will be conducting gladiator trials and getting
pointers on the full contact engagements he is planning for our exhibitions.

Equipment Suppliers - Albion - Blacksword - LaWren's Nest are coming out

Salve, Lucius Tiberius Sardonicus.

To further clarify my opinion; If one of the Capiti Censi has the
potential to become the greatest Consul/Propraetor/Whatever ever of Nova
Roma, with many followers, and no enemies, along with all the skills
needed, should we deny ourselves his leadership abilities, just because
he hasn't paid his taxes? He may not be suited as a scriba, nor as
another of the appointed positions. But he would be a great assett to
our beloved Res Publica in one of the offices the current proposal would
prevent him from ever attaining!

The problem here, I think, is that holding an office is considered
something too positive for those unwilling/unable to contribute
financially to Nova Roma. But remember, holding an office isn't all
glamour. We have all read the recent postings regarding the expenditures
involved in holding, for example, the office of Censor. And don't forget
the countless hours required to perform the duties involved!

I've read many posts recently comparing Nova Roma to private clubs and
other organizations. This is not a proper comparison. Nova Roma aspires
to one day become a nation, and in most modern-day nations, I doubt
there are any laws prohibiting those who don't pay their taxes from
holding public office. Public opinion in the matter may prevent them,
but legislation won't.

My main point, again; Some people are better suited for certain
positions than others. If one of the Capiti Censi is best suited among
us for the office of, for example, consul, should we deny ourselves his
competent leadership, and deny him the opportunity to contribute to Nova
Roma in the manner he is most proficient?

I hope I've made myself clear, but if not, please address any part of my
post that is unclear to you, and I'll attempt to further explain the
details.

Vale,

Titus Octavius Pius,
Consiliarius Thules,
Praeco Anarei Thules,

Salvete,

I'm still in Germany but found these nice free-use computers in the
post library.

Does anyone know where our new Vestal, Lucilla Cornelia Prima is?
I tried emailing her twice and both times the mail was returned as
undeliverable.

Lucilla, if you are still residing on this planet, please email me.

If I may suggest, you might want to check out the Sodalitas Munerum, which
is currently being formed to put together just these sorts of gladiatorial
combats under safe and realistic conditions. We've got an email list at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SodalitasMunerum that you might find of
interest.

Seems a pity to duplicate effort-- that's exactly why we _have_ Sodalitates!

Next year in the Forum!

Surely in this case one of his friends will make the tax payment for him.
We're talking of only 12 or 20 dollars here, a small amount for many of
us, which we would gladly donate to sponsor a worthy citizen who cannot
himself pay.

> I've read many posts recently comparing Nova Roma to private clubs and

Right now we have much more in common with private clubs such as the
SCA or the Masons than we do with nations. We aspire to become a nation
eventually, but until that happens we are a private club.

Repeated, flagrant avoidance of taxes is a crime in most countries and
will earn a prison sentence - an serious impediment to anyone wanting
to enter politics.

But what sort of "leader" is it who cannot inspire even one of his
followers to contribute $12 on his behalf?

And what would you call the mass amount of death that took place in the games
of Ancient Rome? I could regale you with many a tale about people sacrificed
before the Roman mob.
