In my mind, anyone with honor does not quit to make a point. If one has a
real interest, a strong emotional and personal commitment, then quitting is
not an option.

Just my opinion.

Subject: [novaroma] GLADIATOR--The NR version, chap. 3
From: gcassiusnerva@--------
Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 01:57:24 EDT
Just a reminder....this is a fictional story, and is NOT a commentary on the
real life Cassii in Nova Roma!!! So please keep this in mind now, rather
than send me nasty email later!

Chapter 3 The Assasin

It was the next day that Flaccus was summed to the emperor's presence.
Entering the tent, he was surprised to see that the emperor was alone, going
over correspondence at the table. The old man's eyesight was diminished so
that he had to bend low over the desk to be able to read the letters .
Flaccus cleared his throat. "Imperator, I was told that you wished to see
me." Marcus Cassius Aurelius looked up. "Are you alone, Flaccus?", he
asked.
"Yes sire".
The emperor set down his parchment. "I have reached that time of life,
Flaccus, when I must face the fact that soon, I will be dead. And what will
become of Rome after me? It is the duty of a father to see to the welfare of
his family if he sees his end is near, and so I too, have been pondering the
care of our beloved Rome." The old man rose, and walked over to the general.
Then he came to the point. "Marcus Cassius Julianus must not succeed me as
emperor."
Flaccus was stunned. "But he is your son!"
"Cassius Julianius is an immoral man", the emperor continued. "He is a vain,
self-glorified, egotisical, maniacal, perverted, wicked, diabolical,
wretched, disgusting, venemous, nausating, putrefactious pile of stinking,
rotting, cow pies!"
"Now Caesar!", protested Flaccus, "I wouldn't say that!"
"How would you say it then?", the emperor challenged.
"I would say that he...well, he....uh....oh, I guess your way is best Caesar."
"Hmmm". The emperor walked across the tent and sat on a couch, and motioned
to Flaccus to sit in the chair opposite him. When Flaccus was situated, the
old emperor continued. "But there is more to this than Cassius' character,
Flaccus. Let us speak not as emperor and general, but as man to man. Tell
me about your home."
Flaccus rarely spoke of his private life, so he found it a little
uncomfortable now. "Well", he said, lowering his voice a bit, "my home is a
farm in Dalmatia, just outside Salona by the Mare Hadriaticum. My wife,
Salonina, is a teacher in a school. All of her students are girls. There
are a lot of little girls there, actually. They tease my son, he wants to be
one of them!" The emperor had a good chuckle at this. "So your son thinks
he's one of the girls! And how old is he? Two years? Three?"
Flaccus stopped smiling. "Eighteen, Caesar." The emperor too, stopped
chuckling. "Woooooaaaa! So that's how it is, is it?"
"Please don't spread that around, Caesar!"
"Oh, not a word general! Not a word. I just hope I stopped talking in my
sleep."
"Sire", Flaccus said, "I know you did not ask me here to talk about my
family". The old man smiled faintly. "No", he replied, "I didn't. You have
never been to Rome, Flaccus, but if you had you would have been wretching
from the corruption and filth into which it has sunk. There was once a dream
that was Rome, but I fear that by the end of winter, the dream will have
become a nightmare!" The emperor stared hard into Flaccus' eyes for a
moment, and then... "I wish for you to follow me, Flaccus!"
"Sure, Caesar! Where are we going?"
"I didn't mean that literally, helmet head! I mean I want you to succeed me
as emperor when I die! I wish for you to end the corruption, and gradually,
over the years, to establish a constituion whereby the people of Rome will
again be able to rule themselves in a Republic! Now general, do you accept
this high honor which I am presenting to you?" Flaccus looked terrified at
the prospect. "From the bottom of my heart, Caesar....NO!"
"Flaccus", cried the emperor, as he grasped his arms, "that is why it has to
be you!"
"Oh, GREAT!", Flaccus yelled, jumping up from his seat. "GREAT! Just
#*^%#$% wonderful! If I say 'yes', I am stuck with the miserable job. And
if I say 'no', that is yet another reason why I am to be stuck with the *$@&
$% job! Well, no, I will not do it!"
"Please, Flaccus?"
"No!"
"Pretty please, Flaccus!"
"NO!"
"Then I'll order your balls cut off and presented to me in a jar".
"I accept, Caesar!"
"Good!" Marcus Cassius Aurelius smiled, "now general, I am very tired.
Please come back tomorrow, and we'll talk some more."

Marcus Cassius Julianus, the emperor's rotten son, was in his father's
tent looking at the marble bust of his dad, when the emperor came up from
behind him. "Ooooh, a clear shot at his back!", the emperor thought silently
to himself. But then he spoke. "Do you have Rome's best interests at heart,
my son? And are you now ready to serve her in that best capacity for which
your life has prepared you?" Cassius turned around quickly, his face alight
with anticipation and joy. "Oh, yes Father!", he exclaimed. "I AM ready,
dearest father, to assume the awesome power, er, awesome responsibilities of
that station!"
"Good!", the old man replied as he went to fetch a paper off his desk. He
motioned to Cassius to come closer, and then presented him with a document.
"Oh, father", Cassius exclaimed as he tore open the sealed document, "this is
the happiest, most fulfilling day of my life! Now, let's see what this
document says. Hmmm....It reads, 'The Bearer of this document, Marcus
Cassius Julianus, is hereby......licensed to own and operate BROTHELS in any
province of the empire'?????? WHAT IS THIS???"
"You are not going to be emperor, Julianus! Flaccus will be my successor,
and not you."
Cassius tried to be maintain his composure. "I see", he said, his voice
slightly quivering. "And when did you decide I was unfit to follow you?"
The emperor raised his eyes. "Hmmm, only since you were, oh, say five or
six."
Cassius was beginning to cry now. "You once wrote me a letter, father, in
which you said the Roman virtues were auctoritas, comitas, clementia,
dignitas, firmitas, frugalitas, gravitas, honestas, humanitas, industria,
pietas, prudentia, salubritas, severitas, and veritas. And as I read your
letter, I knew that I possessed none of these! But what of my good
qualities? What of my virtues? None of those were included in your list!"
The old emperor looked puzzled. "But Julianus, there aren't any others!"
"You could have at least given me a chance to make some up!", Cassius bawled.
"You never loved me!"
The emperor began to feel his heart soften a little. "Please don't say that
Julianus! I know I too, failed in my duty as a father. I shold have been
there more, rather than personally fighting wars all these years. It is not
all your fault that you are such a dirtbag. Now come, my son, dry your eyes,
and blow your nose." And Cassius did so.
"NOT ON MY ROBE YOU DORK!", the emperor screamed.
"Sorry father {sniff}"
The emperor calmed himself. "Now I think it's best we both get some sleep.
We will speak again in the morning. Good night Julianus."
Cassius turned and left without saying a word.

But he did not stay away for long. When the emperor had gone to sleep
on his cot, Cassius returned, carrying a small bag, tied at the end. He
peered through the flap into the emperor's room, and saw the old man asleep
on the cot.
Then, kneeling down, he untied the bag, and set the open bag inside the tent
flap. Giggling like a mad man, he quickly rose and darted off into the
darkness.

The old man awoke suddenly. He had been startled out of his slumber by
a quick movement, and now felt a small weight on his chest. He raised his
head to see what it was....and his eyes opened wide in absolute horror. For
there, sitting on his chest, was a small puppy! A puppy! One of those
horrid creatures that had always filled him with terror. The puppy had
short, brown fur, and very big, pointed ears sticking up from his head. The
old emperor was too terrified even to scream. The puppy just stood there,
looking at the emperor, his head tilting to the right, then to the left, as
if he were intently curious and trying to understand this person he was
standing on.

And then, the puppy spoke. "Hola!"

And with that, the emperor's heart burst, and his last breath exhaled. He
was dead.

This story will eventually continue in chapter 4.

From: TClaudiusNero@--------

Salvete!

I haven't posted on this list of late; indeed, I haven't felt it my place
to do so. I have been something of an inactive citizen of late. Last year I
served as consular assensis and legate of California provincia, so my recent
inactivity has contributed to my feeling of isolation from the public
goings-on in Nova Roma. This silence has led only to a greater feeling of
isolation, so I've decided to speak up.
I've posted many times in the past to this list since my acquisition of
citizenship in September of 2752 AUC. I applied to Nova Roma with great
hopes for Her future. Following this, I experienced peaks and valleys in my
patriotism. I even resigned my citizenship once and regained it (thanks to
the generosity of the censor, my former paterfamilias Lucius Cornelius
Sulla), as have many of Nova Roma's leading citizens. What, I realized soon
after joining Nova Roma, was causing these wains in my spirit, was my lack of
certainty regarding Nova Roma's goals. In March of last year, I posted here
to the list, asking the citizens what they want for Nova Roma, what their
goals are for Nova Roma. There was no respons for some time until Gaius
Lupinius Festus said that his goal was to escape 'mutliculturalism'. But
that was the only definitive response it got.
We can argue over the laws that govern Nova Roma until we're red in the
face and we've scared off all of our prospective citizens... but what are
those laws governing? A role-playing game? A website with accompanying
discussion list? A chat group for historical discussion? A religious
reconstructionist organization? There seem to be elements of all of these in
Nova Roma... but what are we? What is Nova Roma? Where is She going?
Where does everyone want it to go? Where are the laws we are discussing
leading us?

Valete!

What I learned is that Nova Roma is as vibrant, diverse, and human as

Titus Labienus' answer was much more succinct and efficient than mine.

BTW, one more thing a scan of the archives will reveal is that some

Salve Gaius Noviodunus Ferriculus

First I want to apologize, it has taken me so long to
reply your posting.

As you have noticed, I'm not very active on the main
list.
I follow the debates closely, but do not participate.
Most of the time I find, that what I wanted to say is
already said. That is why I don't post to the list.
You will not find me posting that I agree with this or
that. If something should turn up where I feel I have
to raise my voice, then I'll do it.

When something is on my mind I normaly post to the
persons in question privatly.

That is also the reason why I seek the position as
Rogator. In this position I don't have to take a
political stand. I'll just count the votes and present
the result (Don't get me wrong here,I find this very
important and know it's hard work). This is a position
that would suit me fine.

I'm Legatus Regionis Danicae and therefore also menber
of the Consilium Thules (The advisors of the
Propraetor of Thule)

For the time being I'm working on a proposal to
esablish an reenactment Legio in our Provincia.

I hope this will give you a little impression about
me. I can asure you that if elected I will cary out my
duty with Industria and Firmitas.

Vale, respectfully

Titus Curius Dannicus

Subject: [novaroma] Annals of Nova Roma

I was wondering, does anyone know when the annals will be updated?
Aside from lists of magistrates, there seems to be no history from
1999.

Thank the Gods that someone had the balls (no pun intended) to
say it.

RESPONDEO:

I think the point was missed that we were not speaking of just
whether one was allowed to have exactly the name one wanted,
but whether the name one was allowed to have was of *only one
of the opposite sex*. I simply cannot believe that my good
collocutor Marcus Cornelius Scipio or L.T. Sardonicus would fail
to be profoundly bothered by being forced to bear female names
against their will for the privilege of being cives of Nova Roma.
That other people might feel the same about a compulsory
misrepresentation of the gender of their personalities in the
grammatical gender of their names is very natural too. It is not a
trivial thing to the person concerned.

I myself would feel a bit "careful" around persons so "lacking
in balls" (if I may be allowed the expression) as to let other
people force them into taking a name of the wrong sex, no matter
how attractive an activity they might miss out on by resisting such
an imposition.

Valete!
