Salvete,

For those of you that haven't visited the site yet, these coins are simply
beautiful. I'm going to buy a bunch. One for my son's coin collection, one
for my own less-than-mint collection (as it is more sentimental than an
investment) and the rest as gifts stuffed into a bag on the top of presents
for those that will appreciate them. And, when these coins become a means of
barter, I will use them for that purpose also.

I still don't see how we went from minting coins to a debate on cultural
ideology...

I don't mean to go off on a huff here, but why is there always someone taking
potshots at every little accomplishment that happens within NR? Q: How many
Nova Romani does it take to change a light bulb? A: All of them. One to
change it and the rest to stand around and talk about how it could have been
done better.

Valete,
L. Cornelius Sardonicus

Salvete omnes,

Since everyone is chipping in their bit, I suggest we
mint a coin with an image of the Emperor Trajan on it
(even though he is from the empire). And why not? He
symbolised everything a true Roman should have been
(despite some little things we may see as flaws), and
was a great man in all facets.

From: "Antonio Grilo" <amg@-------->
Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 10:50:24 +0100
Salvete omnes

This is one of the dies nefasti (N), a day on which no legal action can take
place.

On the Nonas, the rex sacrorum appears on the steps of the Capitol to
announce
the regular fixed feasts of the month.

Today is the feast of Semo Sancus (also known as Dius Fidius since the reign
of king Numa Pompilius). Semo Sancus was the principal God of the Sabines,
the equivalent of Iuppiter. The temple of Semo Sancus stands on the Quirinal
hill, south of the temple of Quirinus and adjacent to the Gate of Sancus. A
college of priests called Bidentales (the name was mysterious already for
the ancient Romans) administers His rites.
He is associated with the taking of oaths and the making of treaties, and a
common oath formula is "medius fidius" or "me dius fidius". Such oaths had
to be made 'sub divo', i.e. outdoors in view of the sky and the gods.

Having been baptized Roman Catholic before I even could have a say in
what religion I believe in, I find it no suprise that I am no longer
Christian. I have plenty of friends who are and that is their
business, not mine. As a youngster, I found the Church to be
fascinating with its pomp and ritual, but as I grew up I saw that it
was definitely a creation of MAN, not any GOD.
I presently believe in a Great Spirit that has many facets. Of these
facets, I believe that all the deities that ever have been and ever
will be all lead to this Great Spirit. Heresy? Probably. I don't
think the Great Spirit is as close-minded as many major religions
would have the Great Spirit be. I think that it is actually arrogant
to presume that there is only one legitimate way of belief and the
rest is subject to "hell and perdition".
I find that the Romans were very tolerant of other religions so long
as you acknowledged the state deities. While I understand that some
beliefs would get their undie in a bundle over this, it does make
some sense in that it proves loyalty to Rome. In this day and age,
loyalty is more often proven by being a good citizen or joining the
service. However one believes is not relevant to this, nor should it
be such a stringent requirement.
My own opinion about this matter. I will welcome any discussion with
anyone who would want to email me privately on it.

A: Just one. But in the good old days of the Empire,

Salvete G. Popilli Laenas L. Corneli Sardoniceque,

What is wrong about discussing some topics? Isn't this the very goal
of this NR Main list?

Does your sarcasm mean, all people not saying "Aye" to everything
coming from the higher political spheres should keep their mouth and
watch? For example watch how a poor quality light bulb has to be
changed every five minutes instead of putting a good one that will
last two years? (just to address your comparison).

Actually, if you had read my post, you would have seen that I don't
have anything against coins. I do appreciate the coins we have but
I'd prefer to have them more authentic. Like for example no longer to
mention "I sestertius" since this doesn't really make sense.
