Defending the Frontiers of Ancient Rome
in the Mid - Atlantic Province
of North America

June 20, 2001
Year of Rome 2754

Ave et Salutatio... Commilitones

Hello and Greetings from Gallio Velius Marsallas,
Praefectus, Legio XXIV Media-Atlantia;
Tribune Militaris - NovaRoma - Gens Velia
aka George W. Metz
13 Post Run Newtown Square, PA 19073-3014

VICESIMA QUARTA JULY 2001

FORT MALDEN AUGUST 4 & 5 The Legion will again be at Fort Malden in
Amherstburg, Ontario on August 4 and 5, 2001, opposite Detroit.
The Canadian NovaRoma contingent is also planning to be there for
a regional gathering.
Yes, it is a long drive; but this event is very friendly and busy with visitors.

Several cannons are fired and a rate of fire demo and tactical engagements are
quite enlightening. Last year the Commander was joined
by a couple of the local area legionaries and a few more are expected to turn-out this year.

Pennsic War XXX August 15 - 18
Legion XXIV will be displaying the glories of Ancient Rome at the Great Battle between
the "East" and the "Middle". This is a SCA event and there were over 10,000 people
there in 2000! Many hard contact battles are fought. Quite a sight and experience.
This is not a public event and would cost $90.00 to attend for multiple days.
Contact the Commander if you are interested. Members John Collins and his family
will be there and maybe a couple of others as well.

CAMPAIGN IN THE POCONOS ! Second Call ! Who's In ?
The Legion has been invited to participate in a "March Thru Time" Event at
Memory Town, just south of Mount Pocono, PA on Sept 8 and 9th, 2001.
It is billed as a "Living History Event Spanning the Ages" and is being
sponsored by Company A of the First North Carolina Sharpshooter Battalion.

The site will have rest rooms and showers, along with a restaurant and bar with
entertainment. Also on the property are gift shops and the oldest working
printing press in the northeast. A cabin with 24 hour coffee will be available.
On-site modern motel rooms are also available. Call 570-839-1680 for reservations.

Torch Light tours will be held on Saturday night and each unit will put on a small
skit to exhibit the camp life of their period of history.

Maximus aka John Ebel will be there with his Gladiatorium Academia. He says
he has a couple of more gladiators in training.
John's gladiator event was a hit at Roman Days and promises to draw some crowds
at Mount Pocono.

Sutlers will be few, so bring what you expect to need.

Finally there is a campaign and an opportunity for our Legion XXIV Troopers in the
north to come and assist in defending Rome up here in our Provincia and we should
try to have a good showing.
If you need some help with your gear the Commander may be able to help.
We want a good turn-out at this event. Spare armor and swords will be available;
along with a couple pair of caligae and tunics.
So get to work on your kit, turn-out and show your pride in Ancient Rome.
There will be some extra gear available.
Please contact the Commander if you can attend so he can make the necessary
arrangements with Memory Town and Company A. See the directions below.

There is a new major section on gladiator combat and the Colosseum.
Termed the Gladiatorium Academia. It was authored by John Ebel, who
is a very active new recruit, and your Commander. We are planning to have
gladiatorial exhibitions and the call is out for gladiator trainees. Are you up to
training for the "Games"?

ROLL CALL ! Second Request
There are about 30 names on the Legion XXIV Roster. Some are active and some are

your Roman Name, status, address, phone number, how you are making out with your
equipment and if you need some help. When is the best time to contact you?
I know a few of you have attempted to meet with me and we have not been able to find an

as well. My week night are now free during July and August.
My apologies for not getting with you.

There have been a number of additions to the website. Particularly an extensive page on

Valete,
I now for a third time do offer to host an afternoon repast at Pennsic
30 . It would be on the Thursday of War week. If you are attending and would
like to have a free lunch or help with it (even host it and I will help you)!
Please let me know. It would be around 1 or 2 PM at the camp for the Shire
Of Shadowed Stars - Middle Kingdom.

Our Camp is on the Serengeti and will be on N-1 at the end of near the
Highway.
If members are going to be there it would be a shame to lose this opportunity
to met one another. Please consider this and I will need to know by this
Sunday night.

Subject: [novaroma] Meditations of Marcus Aurelius
From: trog99@--------
Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2001 04:33:12 -0000
Salvete Omnes:

I have found this passage of Marcus Aurelius most inspiring, to the
point where I feel moved to share it will you:

Honour the Highest

Honour the highest thing in the Universe; it is the power on which all
things depend; it is the light by which all of life is guided. Honour
the highest within yourself; for it too is the power on which all
things depend, and the light by which all life is guided.

Dig within. Within is the wellspring of Good; and it is always ready
to bubble up, if you just dig.

You have seen a hand, a foot, or perhaps a head severed from its body
and lying some distance away . Such is the state a man brings himself
to - as far as he is able - when he refuses to accept what befalls
him, breaks away from helping others, or pursues self-seeking action.
You become an outcast from the unity of Nature; though born of it,
your own hand has cut you from it. Yet here is the beautiful proviso;
it lies within your own power to join Nature once again. God has not
granted such a favour to any other part of creation: to return again,
after having been separated and cleft asunder.

O Universe, all that is in tune with you is also in tune with me!
Every note of your harmony resonates in my innermost being. For me
nothing is early and nothing is late, if it is timely for you. O
Nature, all that your seasons bring is fruit for me. From thee come
all things; in thee do all things live and grow; and to thee do all
things return....

Waste no more talking about great souls and how they should be.
Become one yourself!

Marcus Aurelius, from Meditations.......

Marcus Aurelius, known as one of the Five Good (great??)
Emperors......such broadvisioned, immortal words and thoughts,
treasured by men of many different faiths throughout a vast passage of
time hence.

Salvete Omnes,

Over the last few listings I have read many of the retorts posted after this
topic was brought up. I am sure many of you a avid readers of ancient Roman
philosophy, culture, and religious practices. I believe that this posting
posses a very interesting question. Being, how could a culture hold
seemingly contradictory beliefs. This may be a very dificult question to
discuss without our modern concepts getting involved.

I have done some reading on ancient cultures and their ways of living. In my
readings I have found that these ancient peoples in some ways were not much
diferent than us. For example, take a cross cut of Roman culture in any
ancient time period and consider who was living in a given city. Consider
Rome itself, there were diferent quarters in the city and in these areas
would be differing cultural centers do to its main population. Romans,
Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, etc.... be they slaves, freeborn, visitors, or
transplants (those that have moved from another area) all would have lived
in the city of Rome.

Are we to assume that these people would stop believing in their personal
ways? Do we, when we move to a new city, house, or country? Or do we bring
our personal beliefs with us? When we move do we not also try to live in
reletive peace with our new neighbors?

Now think of all the things you have read about the Roman's, the mob of
cultures that the city of Rome had to be. How many temples were built in
Rome; and how many were truely Roman. I believe that the Roman culture, in
the period for kings, had several rulers that were not freeborn Roman
citizens. That in later periods there was the cult of the emperor. Also,
that gods and goddess from other cultures were adopted both officially and
by personal favor. If this were not the case then temples would have never
been build to such deities as Cybele, Isis, Orphius, just to name a few. If
adoption did not happen then Roman Emperor's would have never had statues of
Roman gods and goddess next to adopted gods (like Christ) which in turn
stood next to ancesteral masks and house Lares.

Now consider if adoption of beliefs happened, and does still. Because we
hold true that which seems right or familiar to us. Do you not think that
the Roman's would have seen other beliefs in familiar terms to there own
views? Personally, I doubt that religious unrest comes from the religion,
the belief, or the philosophy of the religion. However, any given belief can
and is used by human nature to set aside ourselves as special and diferent.

I also doubt that the belief in a singal god as appossed to many gods was
the cause of social, moral, or ethical change. However, I do think that
social unrest does occur when we as a social identity feel threatened. We as
social groups do not like change. Especially, if that change seems to be
more powerful than us. We try to control the new intruder by changing its
views to be more like ours in failing that we push it away and reject its
reality. By the way, we as individuals and cultural groups still do this.

This is just a thought on the possed topic. I was once tought a very
important concept of life. The concept is this, when entering a new
situation especially a conversation that may set you on edge. Meet your
friend and apponent half way, by first, agreeing to disagree not to fight
over who is right or wrong about the subject or situation. This allows a
discussin to happen and not an arguement to insue. If you can keep this in
mind then you can ask each other questions and assist each other in solving
the question of the topic.

Valete Prima Nocta Ritulia
May all your discussions lead to new ideas and not to dishonor :)

I keep hearing this & just wonder why so many historians etc think that
people's psyches were so different just because they lived long ago. Notice
I said psyches, NOT beliefs etc. Different societies bring thier children
up to believe differently. That would be why "universal morality" is so
hard to define, even with only contemporary societies, since a vast
difference exists in our modern world. Throw in the ancients and no matter
what you feel must be "beyond question evil" some society now or in history
will have practised this and felt it to be morally correct.
But that is not the same as saying their brains don't work like ours, or
that psychologically they functioned differently. If you study the reasons,
for instance, that the Aztecs sacrificed so many victims in the way they
did, it makes sense psychologically. Nothing alien. Just programming &
conditioning.
So, the only barrier to figuring out how to "think like a Roman" is to
figure out why they did what they did.
And there certainly seems to be a plethora of philosophical texts helping us
out there. More than any other ancient culture, I would think.
So yes, our comprehension can come very close to "getting it".
Oh, & this does not even address something a lot of us Pagans believe in,
which is reincarnation. LOL

From: "David Wolfman" <dwolfman@-------->

Salve,
I would like to point out something. Language is a very powerful tool. Used
with care it can enlighten, but it can also unintentionally stir dissention.
I make this observation in that the our recent discussions about religion
and history we have made statements phrased "blaming Romans". As a
correction I would say again neither Romans nor Jews as a group were
responible for Christ's death. Rather I see it as a group of individuals
within the power structure of 1st century Jerusalem should be held
accountable. It can be said certain elements within the overall Roman and/or
Jewish societal system were used against Jesus, but the people as a whole
should not be blamed. I sincerly doubt that as a Roman military governer,
Pilate asked for the opinion on this matter, or many matters. He was acting
as a representive of the empire and thus used his authority and judgment.
Another problem is that the Jewish people then, and today, almost never had
a unanomous decsion on anything. On the unlikely chance Pilate did ask the
crowd their opinion he would have had a multitude of differing opinions on
the case.
The Roman authority was over both the priests and Herod so that the local
government worked for Rome. This is not really important. Yes, the Romans
used locals to do their dirty work whereever they went, Yes, the Romans let
local traditions and local government handle the day-to-day affairs of
state. The Roman's prime concern was financial. In this way Pilate could
made a statement saying he washed his hands of the case since it was a local
dispute. But, the reality is he was responisible because he was the man
giving orders to the local authority, even to the priests. His convienent
washing of his hands is a way to shift blame. Once again this is not longer
important in the grand scheme of things. No one group is solely responible.
Don't blame the Romans or the Jews. Blame the indivduals in power.

The other points I would like to touch upon while I am writing this epistle
(let it be known I rarely given short answers, my profs. loved my essays)
are the historical pysche and the official study of ancient Judaism.
The latter being a personal issue. I wish to clarify and correct myself. I
was under the impression the NR was debating an official "church" of the
Jewish faith, rather than an official area of study. I do not encourage an
institutional or orginized Jewish "church", nor do I believe any religion is
aided by putting itself into a state of institutionalization with a
hierarchy and inflexible structure. However, I do wholeheartily encourage
the study of religions. The more knowledge we have of our personal faiths
AND other faiths the more understanding and tolerance there is. The concepts
of multiculturalism and education leads to growth. Ya-shiva, or places of
study and learning, are very important in the Jewish tradition. They
encourage debate, literacy, interpretation of scripture and the Laws. After
the destruction of the Temple the synagouge and ya-shiva made the faith more
accesible to all Jews, not just the priests. The rabbi is a teacher, not
ordinain with any power above anyone else. A rabbi is a rabbi because of his
knoweledge of scripture and the Laws. His rule to officaite over ceramonies
is something any Jew (or any person) who studied the law. A Jewish community
required never a synagouge nor rabbi only a place to meet and a person who
can read and understand the Law. Having said this, I believe it would
benefit NR to have a its citizens have the opportunity to learn about
Judaism. Philo and Josephus were influencial in the Jewish and overall Roman
community. Philo's thoughts on Greek philosophy encouraged the Neo-Platoism
and a rebirth of Stoicism. His thoughts were of unity. Philo writes for both
audiences saying we are more alike if you look at our ideas. He saw more
similarites than differences.
That brings more to the historical pycshe. I have studied history and
philosophy with a passion since elementary school, maybe before. Just
because the Romans or Greek or Persians come from a time so removed from
ours it does not mean they thought all that differently from you or I. In
fact, ancient philosophy will resonate with the modern reader because times
and environment change but the human mind is not seperated by the boundaries
of time or place. Reading a letter from a Sumerian father to his son in
school is like reading one from today. The father tells his son to study
hard and stop asking for more money. He says to mind your teachers and not
go to parties and chase after women... mind you as today I the son did not
neccisarily follow that advice. Open Marcus Aurelius today and you will see
the same concerns (health, money, children, safety, etc.) as you and I have
today. Plus we gain a new perspective since humanity is evolving, but with
the same needs, we look at our ancesters for guidence since they faced the
same problems in totaly different conditions. Learning from the past,
victories and failures, we as a species can see where we have been and how
far we have progressed or regressed and build for the future.

Thank for your time once again my friends,

Marcus Sententiosus Lupis

Ave fellow Pompeia,

I am in the process of reading the Meditations by
Marcus Aurelius at this time. I have found his
writings to be very insightful and comforting. There
is a Stoic Society that has a yahoogroups list that I
belong to. There aren't very many posts but when they
come I really look forward to reading them.

Vale,

Pompeia Antonia Caesar
