Salvete,

In regards to the planned Roman Days event, let me know when/where etc and I
will be sure to include the info in the issue of the Eagle coming out the
month before the event.

I believe there was talk about having a "bulletin board" type site where
people could post meeting dates etc so that any Citizens who wanted info on
upcoming events could just check it out. I think this is a wonderful idea
that needs pursuing. Is anyone working on this?

Cassius:
There is a vast difference between being "passionate" and crossing
commonly recognized borders of acceptable behavior. When Citizens
start demanding that other Citizens be prosecuted legally, I would
say that line has been crossed.

What I am actually surprised at is that we seem to learn nothing as a
community from these episodes. It *is* possible to discuss topics
passionately without say, calling people "Nazis", (or saying that
they are acting like Nazis, or should be with the Nazis, etc.) Such
tactics are used deliberately to hurt others, and turn a public
debate into a personal argument every time.

> Octavia:
> I was brought up not to bring these things up with strangers at
social functions. Here at NR we have a lot of strangers with a wide
open "social" forum to discuss politics and religion. Respectfully,
what did you expect? Do you honestly think the ancient Roman forum
was any different?

Cassius respondit:
The ancient Roman forum WAS different, in that people communicated in
person. Each person's statements could be modified by any number of
physical clues; tone of voice, eye contact, facial expression. Here
we are judged only by the words we choose. If we deliberately refuse
to choose them carefully, or worse yet, choose do do others as much
verbal harm as possible, everyone suffers. In the ancient forum, an
argument was usually an isolated incident. Here, all other
conversation in essence stops.

> Octavia:
> The only problem is that, usually one person, writes in a hateful
manner and sets off a firestorm of controversy. And, some citizens
are sucked into the trap. If people would not react so fiercely to
this person, perhaps things could be kept to a low roar. Instead, we
constantly answer and acknowledge this person giving them far more
power than they deserve.

Cassius:
I agree completely! Back in the "old days", before eGroups or
YahooGroups, this sort of conversation was done on the Internet
Newsgroups. People used to love to "troll" those groups - popping
into a forum, saying outrageous nasty stuff, and then enjoying the
fireworks display! One group that never worked with was the Quaker
newsgroup. People would regularly stop in and post long diatribes
about how all Quakers were devils and going to hell, etc... and there
would *never* be a response. Nobody ever rose to the bait.
The "trolls", completely ignored, would go elsewhere. One of the most
admirable community responses I've ever seen.

> Octavia:
> IMHO, I have said it before and I will say again, there is a
distinct difference between merely strongly disagreeing and peddling
hate. Did Rome not fall from within and not without?

Cassius:
Both, I believe... gotta love them Huns, Ostrogoths and Visigoths!

Octavia:
> Thank you for your attention. I have the most fond and respectful
feelings toward you and others that agree with you. I can certainly
sympathize with your opinion. When all grow weary of this thread,
another will begin and I suspect will end up the same way.
>

Cassius:
I agree that this thread will pass away in due course. But a
particularly nasty outbreak of uncivilized exchange needs to be
recognized for what it is - a serious wound to Nova Roma.

People are calling for legal action. NO DOUBT some Citizens will
renounce their Citizenship over this simple list exchange, forgetting
that such things are temporary and will be forgotten in a matter of
days. The harm done to our community will neither be crippling nor
permanent... but it IS a shameful waste of our talents and effort.

Citizens of Rome.....

Regio Lacus Magni Orientalis shall hold it's Roman Days event on Saturday,
October 6, 2001. It will be held in Columbus, Ohio, actual location to be
determined shortly. I have sent messengers to all legio within march of the
city, inviting them to attend, and take part in a major military exercise.
In addition, we will have games! And every good Roman loves games. We will
also be awarding prizes to winners of the games and other contests. We will
have displays for citizens to display their arts and crafts. There will be
food. The event is designed to introduce Nova Roma to the public, and to
give citizens of our Regio and abroad an event of fun and excitement. We are
also planning to have a feast for all Roman citizens who wish to gather after
the event, more to follow on that as well. I ask that any citizen of the
Regio who I have not made contact with, please contact me ASAP. And I invite
all Romans to attend this event. We will not be charging an admission fee,
but sometime around the first of September, we plan to make another
announcement and start asking for possible RSVPs so we can guage the
attendance. I am meeting with my staff next week to conduct further
planning, and once everything is finalized, I will present an agenda for all
to view.

Respectfully,
Marcus Africanus

Sulla's probably the LAST one to know this, but I received an e-mail
containing a very nasty virus from the sender "L. Cornelius Sulla."
Obviously, this is a worm that works through the recipient's address
book. Nova Romans probably want to be very wary of e-mail right now --
don't open any attachments unless your virus checker is up-to-date.

It's summer and the script kiddies are obviously bored.

A brief description of what the message can look like and two info
links are
provided below:

Win32.SirCam.137216
Win32.SirCam.137216 is an email worm which sends itself as well as
clean documents from an infected machine. The worm arrives in a
message which may be either English or Spanish. The English messages
appear like this:

Hi! How are you?
I send you this file in order to have your advice
See you later. Thanks

The middle line may be chosen at random from one of the following:

I send you this file in order to have your advice
I hope you can help me with this file that I send
I hope you like the file that I sendo you
This is the file with the information that you ask for

Ave,

I had received this virus email and didn't open it.
It was not signed and the sender did not address me.
I emailed them back asking what the email was about
and never received a response. When in doubt you can
always email the sender and ask for more information.
If you never hear back from them, chances are, there
is something amiss. Better safe than sorry.

This potter is a friend who is always looking for new venues for his
skills. Hoar has a real gift at creating reproductions. I own a wonder Roman
oil lamp I commissioned from him. it burns olive oil very nicely. Hoar is
currently making one with three spouts so I can burn three wicks at once.
Right now he and his lady live in the Cleveland area but will be moving back

They didn't have cell phones back when they made the film - but
it is a well-known blooper that a couple of the USC Trojans
[playing spartans ;-) Got to love THAT little irony ;-)] wore in
several different scenes watches and sneakers along with their
spiffy little red uniforms.

On the other hand, the set for the epic Cleopatra filmed on the
beach just north of LA is used by USC archeology department as a
training dig ;-) II guess if MArc Anthony cant go to Alexandria,
Alexandria must come to Marc Anthony ;-)
