Salvete Quiritibus;

Just a note to let everyone know that I'm gradually on my
way back. Though still traveling extensively, am slowly
'officially' coming back to the world or leastwise as much
as current circumstances allow. This mail somewhat of a combination
travelogue et brief commentary, so please feel free to tune
it out if you wish.

For the new cives: welcome!

For my old friends, former enemies and friends to be -I look
forward to speaking with you all soon!

So what has Oppius been up to during this long leave of absence?
Well, traveling mostly -both for work and for fun with mi familia.
Have also had the pleasure of meeting Sulla and Marius Cornelius
Scipio and his lovely wife Laura in the flesh during my visit to
sunny southern California. Also, there were some things that needed
to be sorted out both in my personal life and also in regards
to my involvement in Nova Roma. (More on this below.)

Lest it seem biased; I can but say that it is hard to find finer
individuals then they. The visit was immensely enjoyable and Gods
willing, such visits will happen with greater frequency in the
future. -This seems highly likely as the familia will be trekking
down to southern California in a formal relocation in February
or March of 2002. (Possibly sooner but who knows what Fortuna
will bring?)

As to Nova Roma, a few general things I should probably say to
mark my return: (below and in no particular order)

-I've realized that I have just plain taken on too much responsibility
in NR for my current circumstances. This is my fault and mine alone,
am not seeking to make feeble excuses or throw blame around. The
short of it is that in the coming weeks, I will shedding some
NR responsibilities and consolidating others. This will include
among other things discontinuing membership in some Sodalitas. My
primary focus will be my elected and appointed positions, other things
will be jettisoned.

-I will be traveling very frequently in the coming months and as such
my NR activity will continue to be erratic. Doesn't mean I don't care,
it's just the old variation of 'life happens'; or something to
that effect.

-It should be honestly stated that I haven't followed any events
in NR during my absence and am still on "web-only" delivery for
all lists. Over the next couple of weeks, will be gradually changing
this to mail delivery; but list reading and participation will be
erratic at best. There are some matters requiring follow up and will
be doing this directly with the individuals involved. If there is
anything that requires my attention, please e-mail me directly at
"oppiusflaccus@--------"

-Also to mark my return, I've decided to become basically 'apolitical'
in Nova Roma. I'll continue to vote and discuss issues with my friends
as needed, but you won't be seeing me much in any political
debates. There are many (probably obvious) reasons for this, but please
feel free to contact me directly with any questions. At this juncture
in my life, am much more concerned with having fun and enjoying
concordia with my peers in our studies of Roma Mater. One of the major
realizations I came to during my absence was that frankly, it just
wasn't fun for me anymore.

-In keeping with this theme, I wish to declare that I no longer consider
myself to have any enemies here. As far as I'm concerned, the
past is the past. If there is disagreement, it will be handled privately
and off list and it should be known that I bear no one here in NR any
ill will. If we have butted heads in the past, please consider it over
and forgotten (leastwise, as far as I'm concerned.)

Having gone on long enough, I'll step away for the night. Be well!

Bene valete in Pace Deorum,
-Oppius Flaccus Severus

Salve Oppius!

Nice to know you're returning, okay we're going to be blunt. Did you bring
your elven pal back anything special? Such as "Winnie The Pooh" themed?
Tigger & company?? I think this is going to be too much to hope for. Glad
the Gens Flacca returned safe and sound.

Salvete Iterum,

One more thing. I got my coin, I got my coin! Yes only one, my roman mommy
Secunda Cornelia Valeria sent one through snailmail to me. I must say pretty
nifty looking, kudos to Cassius! Now I will order more in the future, since
I know for a fact they aren't cheesy looking. I've had a coin experience
where what I bought, wasn't what it supposed to be. So I'm touchy in that
area, any cive who has not purchased these Nova Roman currency, I highly
recommend that you do.

A comment in general.

Salve,

Personally, I would love to see more face to face or email contact between
Nova Roma members. After all communication is a pathway to new beginnings
and new insights. Also to add, I live in Oregon and would like to meet some
of my Nova Roman neighbors :)

Salvete,

I know this is last minute, and I apoligize for that, but is anyone
interested in getting together one day this weekend at America's Stonhenge
in Salem, NH for a meeting/picnic? While it really isn't Rome related, it is
interesting (and was the best I could come up with on short notice ~_^) If
you would be interested, please let me know as soon as you can, so we can
plan the details. Thanks!!!!!!

BTW the America's Stonehenge website is at http://www.stonehengeusa.com/

Ave,

These coin frames are available at some jewelers and coin dealers and this is a great idea. Also, perhaps a small coin suitable for the finger could be struck and placed in such a frame and attached to a band. THis is often done, for instance, you may see this type of ring sporting a Chinese panda coin in gold. There are several others done this way, this is just one example of many.

someone please contact me through the group and let me know what more

Ave,

It is not for me to invite you to our gens, however, we are most fortunate to have as our Pater, Marcus Octavius Germanicus. I would hope that you pay a visit to the website attached to this gens as it conveys the deep regard our pater has for Religio Romana and his familia.

I am very happy and proud to be a devoted member of this Nova Roma family. I have been privileged to view your postings and I personally regard you with much respect and have enjoyed the tone of your messages. You are always kind and thoughtful and have much to offer. Many a gens would be lucky to have you.

Good luck in your quest,

I submitted an application for citizenship a short time ago, and since
signing up for this mailing list, I've become doubly excited about my pending

Any idea how long it takes, generally, for an application to be reviewed and
processed? Any info would be much appreciated.

Salvete,
As I am getting ready for Pennsic I would like to begin the ground work
for a gathering of NR in the fall and spring. I have hit a serious road block
There is no e-mail adrress listed for anyone in the Provincial list.

Please if your a Mater or Pater of members who live in Indiana I need
your help.
Would you please consdiering contacting theses members and share my e-mail
address. Have or at the very least encourage them to contact me . if they
will permit it perhaps forward their address to me so I can make a mass
posting .

I am leaving friday for Pennsic and will be back in roughly 8 days. I
am one of three cooks feeding 40+ people two meals a day. To say its a
"working" vacation is putting it mildly. So I will be all too happy to come
back to the waiting arms of NR when its over.

Ave Prima Nocta Ritulia,

The best way to meet other Nova Romans is to just
organize a meeting at your home or at a restaurant and
invite all NRs in your area. That is what I am doing
this Saturday and I will have at least 12 people in
attendance. It is also a good idea to invite non NRs
as well as this is a good way to bring new cives to
NR. You can post your meeting on this list and your
local list if you have one.

Salve,

Welcome to Nova Roma!

Right now we are about to vote on some new laws. In order to prevent
"stuffing the ballot box" we have a law that prevents applications
from being processed while one of the Comitae is meeting. The Vote
will end on the 24th, so you should hear something around the 25th if
the Pater of the Gens you are joining has approved your application.

Under the current law it can't be listed, even if you want it. If the
admendment to the privacy law passes then citizens who wish to make
thier E-mail address public will be able to do so.

Subject: [novaroma] After Action Report--Long Island Event--LUDAS MAGNUS GLADITORE (long)
From: jmath669642reng@--------
Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 14:12:19 -0400 (EDT)
Ludas Magnus Gladitore (The Great School of Gladiators)

Citizens, Magistrates and Honored Consuls of Nova Roma;

I beg your leave to report to you the events of past weekend with the
Roman Gladitorial Event at Eisenhower Park, on Long Island, NY. The
above event, as previously announced on the Main List, was NOT an
officially sanctioned Nova Roma Event, as such, but was arranged
privately by a great reenactor, and personal friend--Mr. John Ebel
(Maximus Mecurius Gladius). John is a member of the XXIVth Legion
(sponsored by Nova Roma) and has been asked to consider joining Legion
VIth as well. He had done a significantly impressive gladitorial
activity previously at "Roman Days" in Maryland. As ProConsul of the
Province of New England, I had previously announced, on this list, (Nova
Roma Main List Message #23806) that although this Event was to be held
outside of the New England Provincial boundaries, I had declared it as
an official New England Provincial Event on the Main List because I felt
it was fairly close by the New England Province, it would provide the
opportunity for another face-to-face event, and after my discussion of
the success of Mr. Ebel's excellent presentations, demonstrations and
gladitorial bouts at the Baltimore "Roman Days" in June, (Nova Roma Main
List Message #23415) I felt that such a planned event would be an
excellent show for anyone interested in Roman Gladitorial Culture from
my province, who might be able to attend.

Those who attended were:

--Cascus Tiberius Rufus Longinus (Cdr of Legion VI--and a Gladiator
Ordinarii)--(NR);

--Titus Ausonius Italicus (Legionaire--Legion VI);

--Quintus Verilius Lucan (Gladiator Tresarius--Net and Trident);

--Maximus Mecurius Gladius (Co-Owner of the School and Chief Gladiator);

--Lupas Britannicus Antonius (Centurion--Legion VI and the "Wolf of
Britain" Barbarian Gladiator)--(NR);

--Precillius Vandoria Antonia (Wife of Centurion Britannicus and
Mistress of the Camp);

--Miniumus Mecurius Gladius (Junior Gladiator In-Training);

--Tridentus Mecurius Gladius (Junior Gladiator In-Training);

--Marcus Minucius Audens (Roman Senator and Co-Owner of the
School)--(NR).

The weather for the event was excellent; Cool and cloudy on Saturday,
but clearing with increased temperature and plenty of sunshine on
Sunday.

The camp was set up, under trees, on a hill just above Eisenhower Park
Lake, at the end of a fenced area, triangular in shape with the
temporary fence separating the camp from the "colliseum battlefield."
The camp was accessed by a wide walkway off a paved park road, with a
gate consisting of two ten foot posts and an excellent wooden sign over
all announcing the "LUDAS MAGNUS GLADITORE" in period lettering and
design. Other signage indicated who we were and what we did, in more
detail, for the information of the spectator public.

The Camp consisted of the Legion VI wall tent and military weapon,
armor, and accoutrement displays, The Chief Gladiator's Tent was adorned
with gladiator shields, armor, helmets, swords, personal chest, camp
equipment, accoutrements and gear. Asssociated with that was a Long
wooden bench arranged through the camp center also as a display area for
the various Gladitorial Weapons in use:

--Trident and Net;

--Gladius;

--Crooked sword;

--Five types of gladitorial and legion shields;

--Various leather and padded armor parts;

--Detailed Helmets of the Fishman, and "Maximus" design;

--Pugios of different design.

The Senator's fly was placed against the far edge of the area, with four
camp tables, covered with blankets, a special period chair of comfort
(for the Senator--Grin!!). Bread, fruit, and wine in period vessels, a
money chest full of "gold" pieces for payment to the gladiators, a
laurel wreath for the temporarily appointed Master of the Games, a
scroll in a leather cover announcing the fighters and thier specialties,
Nova Roma Fliers, Sodalitas Militarium Fliers, and Ludas Magnus
Gladitore Fliers and cards, as well as cards for the one of the sutlers
(The Wren's Nest) supplying Magnus Mecurius Gladius with gladiator
equipment, all filled the tables to overflowing. Extra equipment--
legionare's belts, sandals, leather pouches, bowls, horn spoons, silver
goblets, horn drinking cups and wooden food bowls were also in evidence
for display.

The park brought in a post hole digger for the gate posts, and the two
practice posts or "butts" that Magnus had set up. These practice posts
were in use, almost constantly, by young men wishing to partake of the
basic instruction offered by our Junior Gladiator In-Training, Minimus
Mecurius Gladius for both days. Each young man and woman who exercised
at the "butts," under the direction of Minimus Mecurius or any other
Gladiator, was given a "gold" coin by Senator Audens, with the thanks of
the Gladitorial School. The park also provided a loud speaker system
for the Gladitorial Bouts, as well as giving the School a chance to
"talk" with established audiences in a large auditorium tent nearby to
introduce the "players" and tell the visitors and spectators what we do.
The park's interest in our success could not have been more genuine,
active or interested and this attention was very much appreciated by all
member's of the Gladitorial School.

The Gladitorial School planned two "Colliseum Exravagazas" each day at
apprimately 2:30 P.M. and 4:30 P.M. on the Gladitorial Fighting Field
just outside the fence. These actvities started with the announcement
of the Games in the Mid-Atlantic Province under the approval of Emperor
Domitian (87 A.D.). A GamesMaster was selected from the spectators,
crowned with the gold laurel wreath, and he, after some instruction by
Senator Audens, bade the games begin. The Senator announced the list of
fighters, who demonstrated their weapons and techniques before the
spectators. The gladiators were then called to salute the Gamesmaster,
take thier places, signal ready, and "Engage."

Senator Audens narrated the battles providing information on weapon
usage, fighting styles and field tactics. At the end of each bout the
spectators were called upon to judge death or life upon he fallen
gladiator, and the Gamesmaster made the final decision with a thumb
gesture, The latin words for life and death had been explained to the
spectators earlier by Senator Audens. The winner of the battle was
proclaimed, and was brought forward (if it was the Co-Owner of the
School --Maximus) and paid in "gold" pieces from Sen. Audens own hand.

In the last gladitorial bout on Saturday and on Sunday, the GamesMaster
presented the "wooden sword of freedom" to the "surviving" Gladiator,
with the proper ceremony, and the crowd was encouraged to cheer and
respond to the "victor of the games!!"

On Saturday night Mrs. John Ebel provided the means of a very delicious
meal of venison and vegetable ka-bobs which we roasted over the coals of
a fire in the early evening and enjoyed immensely with bread, fruit and
wine. Cdr. Longinus provided the entertainment with a replay of the
movies "Gladiator" and "Sparticus" together with the further comments
about the making of the movie "Gladiator" and comments from Roman
Historians and Archaeologists in regard to the background of gladiators
in the Roman World. I thank both Mrs. Ebel for a delicious evening
meal, which was at once in period style, very satisfying and extremely
thoughtful, and Cdr. Longinus for his provided entertainment.

John Ebel and myself were the recipients of several requests from
interested spectators to appear in future engagements of this type
ranking from appearances at local birthday parties to appearing in a
coming Institute of Italian Studies and Culture on Long Island. I have
left these requests in the able hands of Mr. Ebel and will rely upon his
pursuence of these requests, with my assistance, as I may. Still other
spectators requested information on how to join the Gladiator School and
for consideration to be added to the Gladiator List under training and
notified as to our future schedules, and related gladitorial
information. As you may imagine, these requests were all very
flattering to a new unit attempting to gain some small modicum of
attention, amid the presentations of experienced reenactors of the Rev
War, and Civil War periods who were in close proximity to our camp.
This is not to mention the extensive array of sutlers, Scottish Clan
music and the Naval Ship display which was nearby. Unlike "Roman Days"
this was not the only attraction by far, but rather a competition with
an extensive and experienced array of vendors, reenactors and
professionally produced displays. I am extremely pleased at the
Gladitorial School's success in that mix!!!!!!!!!!!

In the times between bouts, the gladiators practiced at the "butts",
assisted any visitors to the camp with information, demonstrations, and
other activities, and answered hundreds of questions pertaining to the
School, the Legions, and the politics of Rome. Senator Audens and Cdr.
Longinus discussed future campaign plans, counted money out and
explained to those interested the basis of bartering and contract
negotiations with GameMasters in selling and buying the services of the
Gladiator School. The Centurion Britannicus excised the Legionaire
Ausonius in Legion battleline tactics and movements, and Mistress
Vandoria (Camp Mistress) in her very lovely self-designed gown and dress
answered questions about the role of women in the Roman world.
Gladiator Lucan and Junior Gladiator In-Training Minimus Mecurius
practiced almost constantly throughout both days at the practice butts
provided. Cdr. Longinius dsplayed and wore a new and very impressive
leather cuirass and Centurion Britannicus also displayed and wore a
leather harness and Legionaire's belt of his own design and making, Both
being most impressive. The School has taken some extensive photographs
of the event, camp, members and actions and will have them
availale for display soon.

The result of the encampment, in relation to visitors attracted, was
very encouraging, the total count of camp visitors (not counting those
who came for the Gladiator Fights only) were appoximately 150-200 on
Saturday, and 200-300 on Sunday, The audiences at the presentations
given by Maximus Mecurius Gladius, in the large tent next door to the
camp, averaged in the area of 150 people for each performance, and the
Gladiator fights (four performances) averaged from 150 on Saturday at
the first activity, to nearly 350 on Sunday at the last activity. These
estimates are the results of spectator counts initiated at various times
during the event by myself.

If any NR or Militarium citizens or members have any additional ideas
for the possible improvement of our presentations in the future, the
Co-Owners of the School would be pleased to hear of such. Those
Gladiator School participants named above without the NR behind thier
name, have been presented with Nova Roma data, a brief description of
the micronation, it's sodaltas' and what it / they can and do offer,
together with an offer of sponorship by myself to application for
membership in NR, by anyone indicating an interest.

I personnally had a great time at this event, I met some great people
for the first time, it was a busy venue, but there was ample opportunity
to relax, and enjoy the friendship and good food with like-minded
friends. I was very pleased to again reenact with my friends from the
VIth Legion, Cdr. Longinus, Centurion Britannicus, Legionaire Ausonius
as well as my friend Maximus Mecurius Gladius. I was also pleased to
meet the others, and look forward to future endeavors in this venue. My
personal thanks to John Ebel for his organizing of this event and of his
allowing it to be advertised in Nova Roma, and in the Province of New
England as a Provincial Event. In additon, for his very kind invitation
to me, to be a part of the Gladitorial School and his willingness to
name me as Co-Owner!!!! My thanks indeed, and I shall endeavor to meet
the needs of this appointment to the best of my ability.

I would strongly recommend any futher appearance of this group to anyone
in Nova Roma, as a participant in the activity or simply to come and
visit with us in a face-to-face. The Gladitorial School, in my humble
estimation, meets all of those attributes for which Nova Roma was
established:

--Detailed interest in all aspects of Roman life;

--Opportunity for more detailed study in specific areas of interest;

--The opportunity to be actively involved in the reenactment of such a
venue as the individual may wish to be;

--The opporunity to meet and discuss above information with like-minded
people;

Very Respectfully;
Marcus Audens

Master R. Palaeologus;

is only impertinent if an individual insults or takes another t task for
little or no reason,

Please contact me if you have any difficulty in completing your
Citizenship requrements or if you have need a a Gens to consider. In
any case, plase contact me and let me know something of your interests
and perhaps I may be of assistance in some small way in showing the way

This message is also addressed in part to any new citizens who have
questions about Nova Roma. I will be pleased to try to answer them to
the best of my ability, should you need the service.

Salve Amicus!

I am glad that You are back. You have been most friendly towards me
personally and my Provincia, but I have disagreed quiie a lot with some of
your political stand-points.

It now saddens me to loose such a good political "enemy" ;-) (I am not sure
that I accept anyone as an enemy). It is always stimulating with different
stand-points and strengthening with political allies. I hope that You will
fail with this idea of being a-political and hope that I will see You back
at the barricades, fighting! ;-)

If not I will have to be content to try to keep our friendly personal
relation! ;-)

Wellcome back!

Ave Marcus Audens,

I found myself completely absorbed in your account of
the Roman Gladiatorial Event at Eisenhower Park. I
hope that at some point we, here in the Provincia di
California, will be able to witness such a spectacle.
Congratulations on your successful venture and much
good fortune to you and your school.

A short note to thank you for the wonderful map of the
Roman Empire. I showed it to several individuals who
were very impressed by it. Truly a work of art.

Vale,

Pompeia Antonia Caesar
