Avete Omnes,

I recently purchased a program titled "Ancient Altered
States", a program on ancient medicine and was very
disappointed that very little of what ancient Romans
used was discussed. Does anyone know if the Romans
had any type of anesthetic drugs used either for
medicinal or non-medicinal purposes? I know they used
opium and alcohol. Are there any others and how
effective were they?

Vale,

Pompeia Antonia Caesar

Salvete,
recently I bought a marked down book at the Waldon Book store
near my job. It is called 'Ancient healing" printed by Publication
international. 1997
isbn: 0-7853-2431-3. One of the best $4.99 I have spent in a while.
It has really useful sections on Greek and Roman healing. If you can't
find it let me know off the list.

Salve Pompeia,

I know this isn't much, but I remember watching a
documentary on the Roman army in which they said they
used Opium and Hellbane for anesthetics during
amputations, and that both were very effective in pain
suppression.

Hope that helps,

I'd suggest contacting several and talking with their members for a while
before making a choice. That way, you'll be sure that you can get along with
your new gentiles, and you'll know that the paterfamilias of the gens you want
is both active and willing to accept you.

If you want a gens with members relatively close to you, the Web site has a
listing of the cives of America Austrorientalis and the state they reside in at
http://www.novaroma.org/bin/view/provincia?provid=A-AE . There are apparently
quite a few from Florida.

Senator / Censor Sulla;

As I earlier explained some spammer filled my mailbox. While it is
fairly easy to do with Webtv, I do not have to concern myself with
viruses, so I feel that the exchange is well worth the dsadvantage,
since I recieved 8 recognizable virus transmissions during my absence,
just this last weekend.

Generally speaking, if my mailbox is not recieving on a Monday morning,
I will clear it when I wake up. On Monday morning I generally get home
from a reenactment in the wee hours.

Mistress Pompeia Antonia Caesar;

My thanks for your very kind and flattering words. The Gladiator Event
was the brainchild of the "The Great Maximus," and I was pleased to have
a small part therein.

I too hope for a similar activity in your province. Nova Roma is slowly
moving in that direction and overcoming the long distances between ther
citizens with more and more face-to-face events, organized by those who
love some aspect of the Roman Culture. However, it does take a certain
amount of skill, much time, a lot of effort, and generally the
determination of one or two people to start the ball moving. John Ebel
is one such individual, and Matthew Amt, and Shawn of the IXth Legion
are others. Pompeia Strabo reports a success in Canada with her event
last weekend (report soon to be forthcoming), and I am certain there are
others that I do not have the information for, at my fnger tips.

So far this year, the New England Province has enjoyed three museum
visits (Boston, Wooster, and New Haven), the Long Island Event, a
Newport, R.I. dinner activity, a lunceon activity in Gales Ferry, and
several chat sessions hosted by my excellent and very active
Massachusetts Legate and some invitations from Southern Maine to meet
for religious activities.

Other provinces report even better records than that, and some provinces
have some very ambitious undertakings that they are working on.

I am glad that you enjoyed the maps. Those will be the last originals
that I will be doing until my eyes get straightened out and until I can
make arrangements for another papyrus supplier.

Ave Marcus Audens,

I am really hoping and working toward a national get
together for Nova Roma. It would be a great way to
present ourselves as a tour de force and attract new
cives. It should be an annual event held in a
different city each year to accommodate the various
provinces. And I'm sure gladiatorial combats would be
the hit of the event! Ah, but in the meantime I'll
have to settle for viewing 'Gladiator' and 'Spartacus'
on my big screen.

Vale,

Subject: [novaroma] Pip is back from trip! Trip, trip, trip!
From: Steven - Piparskeggr <catamount_grange@-------->
Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2001 12:27:32 -0500
Hailsa all! (So, Suess me! ;-)

Some may see this multiple times, I'm trying to get all the folks for
whom I think this might be of interest.

Top o' the Mornin' All! (This is Venator, for my Roman friends.)

The Virginia Thing, sponsored by the Folk River Shire of the AFA was, in
Word and Deed, Skald Worthy! (and I'm working on a poem)

For the newer Folk here:

Thing - The annual gathering for a tribe or a regional group at which
the grounds are blessed & a Friþstead is declared, Blót is given to Tyr
as Thing Ás, the Law is read, matters are voted upon by the assembled
Freemen (such as: new law, law breakers, admitting new Clans/Kindreds)
and the Thingstead is formally declared closed. (a rough description,
I'm sure)

Althing - As above, but for a confederation - alliance of tribes -
kindreds or other national group. The Asatru Aliance will be holding
Althing Twenty One this year. From the descriptions of other events
styling themselves -Althing-, I'm not sure they truly are such.

Moot - Any other gathering of Heathens, from a household level to a
national level. Such like: Several Asafolk gather at a home to Blót
Thor and have feast and merriment aftewards. A few dozen subscribers to
an online list get together, have Blót and feast and merriment and games
and such for an entire weeekend.

The primary feature of a Thing or Althing is the LAW: the reading,
making and judging under. No Law, t'ain't no Thang! ;-)

A quick rundown on the First Virginia Thing (my order of events may be a
little muddled but I'll hit them all, I hope):

Folk River Shire consists of Water of the James and Vor Stead Kindreds,
with another Kindred (IIRC) looking to join.

The VA Thing opened Friday afternoon with the raising of the Folk River
Shire banner, a ritual binding of weapons and then a ritual to
light the Needfire & set the Bounds of the Véstead.

Once folks were settled in, Travis Goði asked Frey's Blessing on the
food (which he did for each meal) and we ate. The food was good tasting
and plentiful for every meal, drink was shared, acquaintences were mad,
friendships burgeoned.

After sunset, Stephen McNallen (Drighten [Chieftain] of the AFA), led us
in Oðinn Blót, a very powerful experience. Several (including
this reporter) felt the Wód Jarl amongst us. Stephen Goði is wondrous to
experience, a man transformed from Steve McNallen.

Later we gathered around the main campire for an informal Sumble of
three rounds: To the Holy Ones (I sang the Ullerbede I sang in Blót at
the ANA Moot), to Heroes and Family and an Open round of boasts,
promises of Deed (in which I Oathed that my first contribution to the
Vinlandabók would be published no later then the Allince Althing 22),
poems, songs...

Then came more talk, and later, a little sleep.

Breakfast the next morning.

The traditional Viking Games were held: axe, spear & hammer throwing,
foot races, and tug o'war. (Next year they'll add archery!)

Merchants were present, with quite nice wares. I swapped copies of my
in progress Blót and Poetry books (including a rough voiced tape of some
of my songs) for a drinking horn pendant. (Ægir Alejarl, Hail!)

In the afternoon, Steve gave a talk about the history, current doings
and future plans for the AFA, and answered some of the evergreen worries
about Folkish Thought and Word.

With that tough act to follow, I did a presentation of some of my
stories and songs, and stated my reasons for writing our stories for our
children and theirs.

It was well received, in fact Garman Lord, King of the Winlandisc Ricé
of Théodisc Belief, William Thane of New Normandy and I were working
on the tune (AnSax harp and Bodhran) for the Heimdall song I wrote and
whistled up.

Travis Goði, assisted by his smart and lovely wife Anna, offered Tyr
Blót. This was a very powerful ceremony. I believe that the the Thing
Os was amongst us. Others and I felt a force and saw the Tyr Rune above
the Vé.

Supper.

An Auction was held to raise money for the Thing Fund. Goðis Steve and
Travis acted as auctioneers, wife Anna Lilley as treasurer and model.
I had donated a copy of my rough manuscript and tape, I was astounded
that it raised the sum of $60 (Théodisc Fehu flowed to Asacoffers ;-)

We broke to have a washup and then all processed to the Véstead, well
after sundown, which had been outfitted with tables and benches, for
Formal Sumble.

While Blót is a forging and tempering of our Bond to the Holy Ones, with
the Goði as Smith and the Folk as witness - Sumble is (in my view) a
forging and tempering of the Bonds between the Folk, with the Holy Ones
as witnesses.

Travis Goði sat as Halljarl, GW sat as Thyle, Stephen & Sheila McNallen
and Garman Lord sat as Honored Guests at the High Table. Anna Lilley
(and another Heathen lady whose name esapes me) acted as Ladies of the
Hall (tending to the filling of Horn and Mug) and carrying the Sumble
Horn around the boards.

Again, three rounds, as I described the informal sumble above. In this
case, the third round can include the Giving of Gifts, which it did.
Many were the Gifts which flowed. I sang an Idunnbede during the first
round, read a poem to the Men of the USS Cole during the second and read
one of the poems telling of my journey from cradle religion to
Re-Awakening in the third.

After Sumble, we repaired to the campfires for talk and story and song,
until just an hour or so before Sunna broke the western skyline.

Sunnasdæg saw breakfast.

The Folk of the Shire, along with Stephen Drighten and Sheila
Alhersjahrgythia, repaired to the Véstead for the Lawspeaking and
Making.

The rest of us listened to a presentation by Charlie Thane of New
Normandy about Weyland the Smith. Quite interesting and thought
provoking.
It gave some new things upon which to think.

More talk and song and poem and laugh.

A formal ceremony to close the Thing and Grounds.

Lunch, cleanup and lingering fare thee wells.

I'm signed up for next year, though I don't know the date yet.

And, I met old friends and new: Stephen and Sheila, Travis and Anna,
Joe and Shelly, Kevin, Eric of MSR, Mark (1 and 2), Patrick, Hrolf and
Linda, Garman Lord Cyning, Æthelwine Thane, William Thane and Diane,
Kevin Ceorl(?) and his wife (whose name escapes me, but is a lovely,
bright, strong wife and mother), Gaylen Hornblower the Duckherd (age 7
and already a budding Skald!), Charlie Thane, Tiffany & other children,
and others I know I forgot or wasn't able to absorb their names.

This was good.

Subject: [novaroma] Fort Malden a Success!!
From: "Susan Brett" <trog99@-------->
Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2001 16:14:11 -0400
Salvete Omnes:

I am very pleased to report that our Provincial/Militarium gathering in Fort
Malden, near Windsor, Ontario this past weekend went
beautifully........better that I could possibly ask for, for a first time
gathering.

It was basically a synergized effort of Praefectus Galleo Velius Marcallas
of Legion XXIV/Sodalitas Militarium, and his legionaries, plus contacts from
our provincia, and Canada Orientalis herself.

The best first!!! We are going to be on TV tonight in the Windsor area,
according to the reporter from CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Association) who
stopped to film us in our Roman garb, plus shoot the wonderful display of
Military armour helmets, gladiae, etc., courtesy of the Praefectus.

I spoke with the reporter about Nova Roma, and my quick-thinking and
cool-headed Procurator, Appius Tullius Marcellus Cato, later engaged the
reporter in a more detailed dialogue, and gave him NR literature, Militarium
Literature, and our provincia business card. He is going to check our the
NR website!! Ya never know!!!!

We had a total of 15 people combined Saturday and Sunday, nine of whom were
attired in Roman fashion. Three were children, five were legionaries, two
ladies in Roman garb, two have applied for citizenship, three are citizens.
Provincial Procurator Appius Tullius Marcellus Cato was magnificently
attired in tunic and toga. One of his sons donned a tunica and military
belt, and looked wonderful! My thanks to him for being such a good sport,
unlike MY son, who would have nothing to do with the tunica......alas.

We had more people Saturday than Sunday, but still enough to render Rome
well represented.

On Saturday, there were five legionaries under the command of Praefectus
Velius.....enough to display some Roman military maneuvers, and go into
testudo formation.........the crowd appreciated that, for sure!!

On Sunday there were three legionaries...still enough to show pilum throwing
and marching formation, which was equally appreciated.

On Saturday and Sunday there was a fashion show of all the reenactors from
different periods, military and civilian. On Saturday, there were the five
legionaries modeling chainmail armour, lorica segmentata, various helmets,
shields, and a legionaries pack.
The best was (Oh Velius, you are going to shoot me!! I forget the name of
the legionary who would wear the wolf's head on top of his helmet) We had
one of those on Saturday..........just excellent!!
Pending NR citizen et Latinist Q. Fabricus Varro was our *wolfman*, and I
must say,he spent alot of time talking to the public about Roma antiquita,
Latin, etc. A most interesting fellow.

On Saturday we had two ladies in Roman garb, myself, and another pending
citizen, Valeria from Magnus Laci provincia. Also an excellent person with
an extensive background in archeology. What a treat to meet her. She was
also kind enough to take some pictures.

Sunday's fashion show had less reenactors but was more varied, in that we
had not only legionaries and ladies, but we had Procurator Cato in tunica
and toga (everyone called him Senator!) and his son in a child's tunica. So
a very comprehensive display of Roman garb!

Boy, am I on a rant here!!!

Continuing with my rant...........

On behalf of the Provincia, Sodalias Militarium and Velius' legion XXIV,I
presented a Grass Crown ,adorned with grapes, seven NR coins and wheat
sheaves ( all to represent the provincial deities) to the Commanding
Corporal of the 34 Reenactment Regiment of Fort Malden. These are kids from
all over Canada who are handpicked for this job. We consensually felt that
their marching, presentation, formations and maneuvers were very tight and
well disciplined. This was the intent: to award it to another reenactment
unit whom we thought was the most deserving based on the above criteria.

The commanding corporal was just thrilled at receiving the corona...said it
was the first official military award the unit ever received......he said
"they will have to ORDER me to take this off my head!!"
Cute........plus..... PLUS!! He later graced the propraetoral cheek with a
kiss........Po's heart went aflutter......alas.......double, triple alas!!

The Nova Roma coins, pamphlets, flyers were well received. And even when I
wasn't handing out the literature, people were picking it up from
Velius'wooden stand near the equipment displays.

People even *ate* the "Eternal Flame of Rome" cookies I baked!!!...which,
were originally intended to be Scutum cookies, but I couldn't get the
cookies to bend......so they were red cookies with a yellow *flame* of icing
on top :) Well, I tried............

The folks from the other time periods were happy to see Rome so well
represented and the Romans who attended want to return next year.

Because of so much traffic and *busy*ness with the demonstrations and
talking to the public, we could not do the ritual to the deities properly.
Plus it was so hot and dry it is unlikely we would have been permitted to
light a flame. So we had a drink of wine, and together, Procurator Cato and
myself toasted Ceres, Bacchus and Vulcan in the name of the provincia. I
said thank you to them and to *whomever else* up above was watching over us
and made the gathering such a success. We will do the ritual properly when
time and climate allow.

SPEAKING OF GIVING THANKS (I'm not yelling!)

I would like to personally thank Praefectus Velius for all he does for Nova
Roma and Sodalitas Militarium as coPraefectus......you travel countless
miles with all of this illustrious Military equipment, promoting Roma,
making NR literature available, as well as Legion XXIV lit. You are
excellent, sir :). And Praefectus Velius and I enjoyed eachothers' company
over breakfasts and one lovely dinner at a quaint Italian Restaurant. Thanks
also, sir, for driving me to and fro.

I would like to thank Consul Germanicus and Priscilla, as well as Praefectus
Audens for sending me some coins, Sodalitas Egressus for providing flyer
ideas... I believe Consul Cassius authored the text I used.

Special thanks to Praetor Urbanis et Proconsul Quintus Fabius Maximus for
his advice on fashions......Fabius sent me some nice sketches which I tried
to replicate as best I could, using the colours he suggested........and
Fabius, the veil was a big hit :) Proconsul Fabi, you, Pater and Audens have
been such great mentors to me in the governorship.....I very much appreciate
all you have done for me.

Our thanks to Pontiffs Graecus and Pontiff Fabius Maximus for their
religious advice and moral support. Pontiff Graecus, your ritual shall be
used, but at a time where it can be done properly, as it should be. It is
on file.

And, thanks to gens Cornelia, Pater Sulla and Matrona Prima for their
encouragement and support.

If you think because you were not there, you didn't do anything to make this
a success, you are sadly mistaken.

Last, but not least, my thanks to Procurator Canada Orientalis, Appius
Tullius Marcellus Cato, for all of his assistance, support and encouragement
to me. I truly could not ask for better provincial staff.

Well...........end of rant!!!

Ave Citizens of Nova Roma,

(Let me preface this statement in the beginning with the information
that I am at my work, and not at home. Therefore I do not have my
emails with exact breakdowns present. With that in mind, I begin my
statement to the People of Nova Roma.)

I come before the People of Nova Roma to announce that every citizen
has been properly aligned in their respective centuries. In other
words, every vote that will be cast will be properly accounted for by
our Rogatores. Every vote will be counted.

I do not have the exact breakdown, and I have asked my Censorial
colleague to publish the edict, as stated by Lex Iunia Centuriata. I
am hoping that as soon as he is able, he will publish the edict which
will show the complete breakdown of how our new citizens were aligned.

In case most of you might be wondering, a full revision of class and
centuries will be done prior to the last day of November, as
