Salve,
I just picked a New Idiot's book at Barnes & Noble. The title is
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to The Roman Empire" by Eric Nelson.
For some reason it says it was published in 2002! I haven't read
any of it yet but it looks real interesting.

Salvete cives et amici,
Citizen Sextus Cornelius Cotta, your new book sounds interesting. My thanks
for your suggestion. You also reminded me of a book on Latin I recently
purchased.
For the many Nova Roma citizens trying to learn Latin like myself, you may
be interested in this book I discovered. This book is titled The Complete
Idiot's Guide to Learning Latin. It is written by Natalie Harwood, and was
published by Alpha Books in 2000. It is a very helpful resource in my seemly
never ending quest to become a fluent speaker of this great language of our
ancestors.

Salve Honorable Retarius Officium Canada Orientalis Amulius Claudius Petrus!
I am sorry that i have answered sooner. I have been busy with my litter of
saukis, the work for the Academia, the writing of a Edictum about a
re-enactment Legio in Thule and the school start (as I am a teacher).
I agree with You that the webmasters of Nova Roma should have credit for
their work and I admit that most scribae will have to work a bit harder to
equal the webmasters. I have divided my Cohors Propraetoris (my
followers/assistants/governament) into two ranks: 1. Legate rank 2. Scriba
rank. I have communicated with the Senior Consul in this matter and the
latest changes to the Constitution (I can't find this, have I got it all
wrong, but still it is in the Regula of Thule) about the assistans of the
Guvernors open up for the Guvernors to treat these assistants with even
more respect. The proposed point system by the two Censors will also give
Scriba a "few" points.
I hope this gives You a clear picture of how I look upon these issues.

Salvete Quirites,
I would like your attention for a sec, speaking as head of the Sodalitas
Musarum.
Since the edictum below hasn't really gotten much reaction, I would like to
urge every NovaRoman to contribute to this festival part. You don't have to
know music, and it doesn't have to be in Latin either. All that is required
is a decent text with some musical indications perhaps. Since everyone
complains now and then how absorbing politics are, here's your chance to
change it!
Honour the Gods, the Senate and the People, and join me in participating in
this festival. Let the creative juices flow.

Salve Quaestor Caeso Fabius Quintilianus,
My thanks for pursuing this and updating me. It would be nice to receive a
few extra century points as a scriba. Although the job description of a
scriba hardly fits the job description of a retarius. The work is very
different and has the potential to be more time consuming if done
enthusiastically. Because of these differences it would be nice to see a
separate position as retarius recognised on all levels of government.
Even if nothing comes about from this, I shall still enthusiastically
maintain my provincia's website. It is enjoyable to aide to our cause even
if it is microscopic in size. Pompeia Cornelia Strabo is also quite
encouraging and a superb leader. Although I would never reject a few extra
century points on the side of all that. *grins*
My thanks again.

Salve Aedilis,
I have been working on a little something. Although I do have a problem with
the edictum. Marcus Arminius Maior said only .doc, .mp3, .txt files are
accepted. If this could be changed to also accept wav. or midi. files I will
be able to present actual music along with the lyrics. It may also encourage
a few more citizens to participate.

AVE DRACO
in my daily life I am a composer, so I would like to participate to
this festival part sending text+music (I already wrote an hymn to
Nova Roma, but I never sent it to anybody).
Anyway, it is no possible to send entries bigger than 3K, so, how
could I send a musical file (always bigger than 3K) in addition to
the text? I am sure that the answer would be "you CAN'T send the
musical file!" It wouldn't be honest to the other participants.
So my question is: which sort of "musical indications" do you mean?
The instruments I chose? The chords? Anyway it would be a little bit
difficult to understand which music I want with my text!
Thank you.

Salve, Mani Constantine Serapio.
Common mistake; 3 MEGAbyte, not 3 KILObyte (Emphasis, not shouting).
Most songs can be compressed into meeting this requirement, for example
into .mp3. Is the song too long? Halve the bitrate...:)
Just me butting in. This whole theme song (National anthem?) idea sounds
quite intriguing. I might be forced to make some form of contribution,
if I get around to it...school starts tomorrow, so I'll not have as much
spare time on my hands.

Pompeia Cornelia Strabo Civites Novae Romae S.P.D.
Alas, I have done something which I feel very sick at heart about.
Due to some "misinformation", which I mistakenly assumed was carved in
stone, I behaved very impetuously and rather unvirtuously to a
magistrate of Nova Roma, namely my boss, Curatrix Sermonen Priscilla
Vedia Serena.
I stand here, publicly, with apology to Priscilla, and I hope you find
it in your heart to forgive me, Vedia. This incident has taught me a
valuable lesson in virtue, and I hope that you and I may continue to
be friends and work together. I am so sorry, Madam Curatrix et Prima
Domina.
I hoping that my behaviour as of late has not caused a major fissue in
our relations, perhaps a dent which I can hammer out over the course
of the future.
I issue this apology before the Senate, Populus and the Deities of
Roma, asking for your prayers that Pompeia, in future, will not be
such a stupid jerk.

[novaroma] Gens Cornelia Monopoly? |

Salvete cives et amici,
First off, I want to announce to the populace that I am completely *against*
the braking up of gens. Its more trouble then it is worth and is a massive
over kill. I do see the possible problem with gens Cornelia though. Gens
Cornelia has a huge community, active, and judging from what I have seen
great leadership. These are the three main factors that make a gens good. Is
gens Cornelia monopolising our family social system? In a few ways yes, it
is hardly a thing to make a big deal about. It is something I recommend our
future government to keep an eye on though.
I can easily see why gens Cornelia grows at its rapid pace. When I was
becoming a citizen I did hardly any research behind the different gens. I
was familiar with the republic and imperial history behind the claudii gens,
so I picked it. It was pure luck that I chose an active group. Now if I was
not familiar with the history of the claudii name I would most likely be a
Cornelii. I would of selected it because it is huge and therefore must be
active and have a good sense of community. Judging from this it is simple to
see why this gens is the largest and most famous of all Nova Roma gens. Not
much of a conspiracy... *grins*
Another advantage is also tossed in for those citizens who become a
Cornelii. They have a tiny political advantage. For example, if I felt
indifferent about two election candidates and one was a claudii, I would
most likely vote for my own gens member the claudii over the other
candidate. Although this is only a small advantage. Most patrician gens have
this effect over the majority of citizens.
The thing we need to keep an eye on is the growth ratio over the other gens.
The bigger gens Cornelia becomes the more attractive it will be to some, the
political advantage will also grow. Right now it is ok, but if in a few
years Gens Cornelia has 200 members and her closest competition is around 50
it may be time to step in and make becoming a Cornelii temporarily more
difficult. This is a possible scenario, and one we should keep an eye out
for.
Gens Cornelia over all does not disserve the criticism it has received. I
admire Sulla and is efforts and respect the citizens belonging to this gens
highly.

SNIP
Salve,
You also seem to be against understanding an issue before commenting
on it.
The ideas regarding reforming our unhistoric Gens system have nothing
to do with breaking up ANY Gens, And Certainly have nothing to do with
anyone's paranoid view of Gens Cornelia.

Salve,
Judging from a post I read at the vedian baths I thought there was a new
radical idea about... Just a little misunderstanding I guess on my part.
I am actually quite aware of and in support of the historical proposal of
reforming the gentes. Although, I believe the inactive paters/maters have to
be dealt with before any major reforms such as those proposed can be made
affective.
