Pontifex Antonius Gryllus Graecus omnibus salutem

This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.

Today is the Meditrinalia (from 'mederi', to heal), which celebrates the end
of the vine harvest. The deity honoured today is most probably Iuppiter
(this is based on the Fasti Amiternini), also honoured in the Vinalia of
April 23. Some later sources mention a goddess called Meditrina, though this
was probably a later invention. Varro [De Lingua Latina, 6.21] says that
Flamen Martialis Flaccus used to say that in old times people used to libate
and taste new and old wine (at this time of year, the new wine is probably
grape juice taken from the recently harvested grapes), with medicinal
purposes. Varro says also that even in his own time many people still drank
the wine saying:
"Novum vetus vinum bibo: novo veteri morbo medeor."
"wine new and old I drink, of illness new and old I am cured."

Di vos incolumes custodiant

Pontifex Antonius Gryllus Graecus omnibus salutem dixit

As already posted, today is the Meditrinalia, a festival of healing
('mederi') probably dedicated to Iuppiter, or less probably to Meditrina.
Libations of wine new (grape juice or must) and old are offered and drank
with medicinal purpose. I have started my day with the preparation of my own
domestic observance of this day. I went to the supermarket and bought wine
white and red, and grapes. Once I arrive home this afternoon I will prepare
a mixture with one half of wine and one half of grape juice. I will then
offer it, libating one part and drinking the rest. Here is how I will do it.

1) Prepare the wine mix, and place it in a 'patera' or another recipient.
2) Prepare a recipient with water to put beside you during the ritual.
3) Go to your place of worship in your home (lararium, shrine, or whatever).
4) Cover your head.
5) Say the following (note that I have amployed the 'si deus si dea' formula
as it is not certain which deity in honoured today):

"Si deus si dea es qui Meditrinaliae tutelam habet, quod tibi hodie fieri
oportet libationem vini novi et veteri, eius rei ergo macte hoc vino novo et
veteri pollucenda esto."

"Be you god or goddess who has the tutelage of the Meditrinalia, as it is
proper to offer to you today a libation of wine new and old, for sake of
this shall you be honoured by this offering of wine new and old."

6) Wash your hands in the water prepared for the effect, and clean your
hands. Take the wine. Pour a part of it in libation saying:

"Si deus si dea es qui Meditrinaliae tutelam habet, eius rei ergo macte vino
novo et veteri inferio esto."

"Be you god or goddess who has the tutelage of the Meditrinalia, for sake of
this shall you be honoured by this wine new and old, which I pour in
libation."

7) Profane the offering, drinking the rest of the wine saying the following
before drinking, as Varro teaches us:

"Novum vetus vinum bibo, novo veteri morbo medeor."

"Wine new and old I drink, of illness new and old I am cured."

8) Finished.

For your information I have based myself on the offering to Iuppiter Dapalis
described by Cato:
http://www.novaroma.org/religio_romana/cato_jupiter.html

Hope this inspires you to do the same or similar, and I sincerely desire you
to achieve the cure to your illness new and old.

Di vos bene ament!
