Well today I have a new question, both for my gens members and for Nova Roma
in general. On the Virtues Page there is a list of virtues that we all
should strive to live by. My question is are there virtues that should be
there but are not? If you could add one new virtue what would it be? and
why?
>

Salvete,

It is always possible that if we could poll a few "ancient" Romans, there
would be qualities that they would expect to see listed among the Roman
virtues that are not up on the NR site. Like all works in Nova Roma, they
are "as complete as possible" up to a certain time. That doesn't mean that
the work is completed!

Yet we should remember there may be virtues that WE feel are important that
weren't spefically focused on often, or as a single quality in ancient times.
This is especally true in light of some current events.

Perhaps we might consider listing some NOVA Roman Virtues, to compare our
views and needs to those of antiquity? It might help define our present as
well as our past, and perhaps there might be a quality or two that should be
on both lists.

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus

Subject: [novaroma] Daily Reading: Publius Ovidius Naso
From: "Vibius Invictus Naso" <jbare@-------->
Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2001 21:00:06 -0500
Salve,

A reading...

Publius Ovidius Naso
Metamorphoses
Book II
Phaethon

Apollo's plea with his son, Phaethon, not to drive the chariot of the sun...

Suppose my chariot yours: what then? Could you
Confront the spinning poles and not be swept
Away by the swift axis if the world?
Perhaps you fancy cities of the gods are there
And groves and temples rich with offerings.
No! Wild beasts lie in wait and shapes of fear!
And though you keep your course and steer aright,
Yet you shall meet the Bull, must brave his horns,
And face the Archer and the ravening Lion,
The long curved circuit of the Scorpion's claws,
The Crab whose claws in counter-menace wave.
My horses too, when fire within their breasts
Rages, from mouth and nostrils breathing flames,
Are hard to hold; even I can scarce restrain
Their ardent hearts, their necks that fight the rein.
But, O my son, amend, while time remains,
Your choice, so may my gift not be your doom.
Sure proof you seek of fatherhood; indeed
My dread sure proof affords: a father's fear
Proves me your father. Look into my eyes!
Would you could look into my heart and see
And understand your father's agony!
See, last, how rich the world around you lies,
The bounty of the lands, the seas, the skies;
Choose what you will of these - it shall be yours.
But this alone, not this! Bane truly named
Not glory, Phaethon - bane this gift not boon!
Why fold me in your arms, fond foolish boy?
By Styx I swore and I shall not refuse,
Whate'er your choice: but oh! more wisely choose!

Vale,
Vibius Invictus Naso

Avete Pater et Alii: I would just like to put "legs" on the above, by
suggesting that "what goes around, comes around". This seems to be a
tried and true "law" transcending any spiritual viewpoint. And,
regardless of how it is worded, it is preached by Islan, Judaism,
Christianity, Wicca, and I am sure when I examine the virtues, and the
writings of antiquity, the concept is the way of the Roman pantheon.

Salvete Quirites: I would like to remind all citizens that voting is now taking place in the Comitia Centuriata. I hope to see a good turn out. Please go to the Cista at http://www.novaroma.org/cursus_honorum/voting/index.html
It only takes a minute, and it is the privilege and duty of every Nova Roman. Every citizen can have their say in the government of Nova Roma this way. It is one of our rights, and an extremely important right. Let's get a big turn-out this time.
Valete, ... Appius Tullius Marcellus Cato
