Salvete Matrona Prima et alii:
Myself, along with Gens Cornelia mourn the loss of Pater's mother. Her
suffering has ceased and she will pass on to a better situation.
Inspite of this hope, it is very difficult to say "goodbye and be
well" to one as special as one's mother; I pray that the grieving
which you and Pater will experience will be a healing experience. It
is important to go through this stage of grieving.
I love you both, and I shall talk to you soon.
As Propraetrix of Canada Orientalis, I humbly ask, for Pater's mom,
for you two and your extended families, the intercession/interventions
of our Provincial Pantheon deities: Matrona Ceres, and Bacchus and
Vulcan. May Ceres pave the way for abundance, Bacchus facilitate
happiness and joy, and may Vulcan forge for you all a plan of balance,
happiness and health in the times to come.
And may Yahweh, God of the Children of Abraham, keep you held tightly
in the palm of his hand.
Love,
Pompeia

Salvete Omnes:
Here are my bouquets. Priscilla suggested we write to three
magistrates; indeed I could spend time writing about the
goodness/contributions of lots others, but I would be writing for
days.
I am not going to mention Pater Sulla, because, being his gens member,
I am admittedly biased in this regard. The three the stick out in my
mind:
Marcus Minucius Audens:
Senator et Proconsul Nova Roma
Propraetor Nova Britannia
Praefectus Castorum, Sodalitas Militarium
Praefectus Fabrum, Nova Roma
Marce Minuci: I cannot thank you enough for all you have done for
Nova Roma to date, and moreover, words could never, ever express my
personal appreciation for being a good friend to me and a fantastic
role model. I have enjoyed my association with you, and our
conversations. I look forward to the day where I can meet you and
Margaret face-to-face.
I think what I like most about you, Sir, is if you do not agree with
something, and I can remember times back in my Consular Scriba days,
you would simply tell me so, in the kindest way possible, but never
sacrificing honesty. When you dislike or diagree with something, you
usually have constructive reasons for how you feel, and are willing to
offer suggestions to make things better.
You are witty, knowledgeable, and a quality person all around. You
will sure have a special, perpetual place of affection and respect in
my heart.........Many, many thanks.
*****************
Appius Tullius Marcellus Cato: Rogator, Nova Roma
Procurator, Canada Orientalis Provincia
Cato, you have been a tremendous asset to the provincia and to Nova
Roma as a whole. You have been an officiant in more elections this
year than you have not. And you work full time, and have a wife and
three boys to care for too.
There is alot of work of format your computer and count votes for
these elections. I am sure your dedication is appreciated by all.
I know I am going to perhaps tell a tale out of school here, but back
during our provincial gathering in Fort Malden in August, you had a
circumstance in your life where you were perfectly justified in bowing
out of the event, but you showed up inspite of these difficult times.
I was very touched by that, as Governor, and as your friend.
You are a very kind, virtuous, industrious magistrate, civie, and a
wonderful father; I appreciate everything you do, and the privilege
of knowing you and regarding you as a friend.
*****************
Antonius Gryllus Graecus: Propraetor Lucitania Provincia (hope I
spelled that right)
Senator et Pontifex Nova Roma
Pontifex Sodalitas Militarium
Pontiff Graecus, to me, the definition of a spiritual person is not
whether one is a Jew, Pagan, Christian or Muslim, it is one who is
sincerely seeking spiritual truths. It stands to reason that there
are many paths which could be chosen to begin this search. As a
Pontifex of the Religio, you seem to convey a message of love, virtue,
and gentle invitation to those not of the religio, yet respecting
their chosen path. This is a gift, and one which could most likely
only be acquired through much prayer and contemplation, serious soul
searching, in an earnest effort to seek spiritual truths.
And you are earnest from time to time to remind us all, that we must
not merely "say" what we are, we must follow that up with virtue in
action.
And once in a while you give us all "spiritual" heck! Well, I don't
mind getting this kind of heck from you.....lay it on!! I need it! It
is coming from the heart of a dedicated spiritual leader, whom Nova
Roma is fortunate to have.
We could all learn alot from you, Pontiff Graecus. Many thanks.
Oh, I could just go on and on here about all the good people in Nova
Roma. This "Friendly Challenge" has sure made me focus on counting my
blessings. Good idea, Priscilla :)

Pompeia Cornelia

Iulia Cocceia omnibus S P D
I offer deepest thanks to our Censores for the ready and prompt assistance
in registration of our new citizens over the years ... and I wish also to
share some thoughts with each paterfamilias and materfamilias on ways in
which we may be able to make the process a bit easier for our good Censores
and new applicants to our respective gentes.
Quite a lot of time and energy is expended in getting the new citizen
registered under a reasonable Latin name and sometimes it's been more
difficult than necessary owing to lack of awareness of those fine resources
readily available. Right among the web pages of Nova Roma, at
<http://www.novaroma.org/via_romana/names.html> is a great deal of
extremely good information on the conventions of Latin names, and I've made
it a point now to include a direct link on our own Gens web page and in
initial letters to those seeking affiliation with us. In the past I confess
to having been a bit reticent about directly offering recommendations ...
but have learned to be a little more direct because I do have ready
information on what names would be a near duplication of those belonging to
present members.
It seems most reasonable to focus upon selection of a suitable cognomen, as
the praenomina were few in number and often only a few of those were
favored by a particular gens. At any rate, I am trying now to be more
proactive and helpful to our newest. Another ready source in print: the
glossaries of any of the Coleen McCullough novels on Rome! I'm enjoying
_The First Man in Rome_ , so recommended by several friends, and I see that
pages 1055 through 1065 of the paperback are fully given over to lists of
names quite suitable for cives of NR.

Salve Pompeia Cornelia
While risking to prevaricate the rules of modesty by prolonging the
talking about the virtues you identify in my person, I cannot stop
from expressing my thanks - again - for your generosity. Just remind
that a man can only be judged most fairly after he dies. From those
departed ones, mankind has since long rewarded the virtuous with
titles of 'Demigod' or 'Saint', erecting statues and other monuments
to their memory. For the wicked ones, mankind has always considered
a 'damnatio memoriae' as the most just reward. Yet, many stay in
between or are completely forgotten...
I'm still young, and if that is the will of the gods, then I have
still much to live... and to err. Therefore, I thank again your kind
words, but please know that I am conscious that my true judgement is
yet to come. Only after I leave my mortal carcass will men be able to
fairly decide whether I lived according to the will of the gods, or
whether I acted against it, or still whether my virtuous acts are
only barely enough to pay for the bad ones I have committed.
In amicitia

Honored Colleague;
Just a few words of appreciation for your continuing efforts for Nova
Roma. Your patient tutoring of me in the aspects of the Religio Romana
has given me a much better understanding of the beliefs of many of our
citizens who believe as you do, and has made it much easier for me to
relate to the ideas of people with whom I am privledged to work in Nova
Roma.
Your notes regarding the religious information on the Main List are
always very interesting and informative. Your past service as an
elected Magistrate and your present service as a Member of the
Militarium Staff is also much appreciated.
However, the strongest link that I feel toward you my friend, is as a
friend, and as a colleague. You have supported me magnificently in my
various Magistracies, and you have always answered my questions fully
and with consideration. You have stood forward for your beliefs and
have shared strongly your feelings in regard to political and social
questions within Nova Roma, and have in doing so given both myself and
others another very important viewpoint.
For all these attributes, you have my thanks and my appreciation, but, I
am proudest of the fact that I can call you friend!!
Respectfully;
Marcus Audens

Salvete Novoromani,
As you can see my Latin (and also my English) is not perfect.. but I'm working hard on it. I asked for citizenship and my pater gens acceptance two days ago and I can't wait to join Nova Roma. I'd like to work with people interested in Provincia Gallia. I'm especially interested in politics and I'd be glad to help Nova Roma and participate in its development.
I'm actually a bit lost at the moment, since Nova Roma is a new concept for me. The website is great, really.. and I had opportunities to speak with several Novoromani who helped me a bit.
I'm just really excited about what you've done. It looks great and I really look forward to be able to give you a hand on that.
Valete,

Ave!
I want to react on the message concerning the names. I would like to suggest to make it more difficult for new cives to have a free choice of nomen gentium. This is: after we have cheched all the patres and matres familiae as being "active" citizens or not (via the census), we can point out that it is better to have our gentes members increase than just the numbers of gentes. Now - and I confess, I myself did the same thing - you can choose whatever name you like. This results in a lot of familiae with only a pater/mater familias and no other members.
As for myself, I first wanted to join an existing gens sharing the same deities. I recieved no reaction and so finally created my own gens, consisting of myself and my wife.
Nevertheless I think it would be better if there could be larger gentes with increasing organisation and communication. THis can be realised by two things: in the application form the choice of the name has to be prioritarily 'which gens do you want to join' and not 'what is your roman name'. Secondly, we can notify all the existing patres and matres and the new ones they will have to pay taxes in order to keep their nomen gentilum. Exiting members who refuse to pay taxes but still want to be a citizen can be adopted by other gentes.
The advantage of an organisation based on gentes are multiple: first of all, the family was the basis of Roman society. Secondly, gentes are no macronational formations. The larger part of them is accepting members from all over the planet. This means that we would finally have reached a level on which we could be Romans in the first place and not Americans, Europeans, etc.
What do you think?
Vale optime in pace deorum!

Thank you very, very much, amice!
Your words are extremely touching for me. It is always nice to receive
praise from someone else, but when that person is such an admirable one
as yourself, it reaches the degree of "pride" :-).
I feel proud for being worthy of your consideration, and I promise to
strive for a better work and a better relation with all my Novoroman

And to all of you, Quirites, I want to say that, although I am the

Censor Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus Quiritibus SPD
Great idea, Caius, sounds much like the proposal I have made for the
past few years, whereby each gens is 'registered' annually by paying
a 'tax' ($20-$25 per gens) and each gens member would be an
additional ($2-$5 a head). Those gens consisting of one member who
doesn't want to pay or those who don't want to pay the "fees" could
simply pettion to be adopted into alternative gens or gather together
and form a single gens or groups of gens, etc. Sorry to be a 'wise
guy' Caie, but I really did think of this first :-) (along with
solutions for some other recurring themes, since March 98)
As for new gens, Censor Sulla and I have drastically reduced the
number of new gens registered; however, those who apply for and are
accepted into an established gens are most often approved within a
day or two.
Note to "Lucius Maximus Serranus": I have not seen any notice from
Marcus Maximus Gaius, he needs to send approval to the Censores or
use the wonderful tool Marcus Octavius set up for Paterfamiliae to do
just that. That is what you are waiting for, not the Censores. I
cannot say how many times applicants have been frustrated, and blamed
the Censores, for having to wait to be approved as citizens because
we have not been informed or contacted in any way concerning
applications for citizenship to join their respective gens by
Patres/Matres.
