make yourself known publicly if you want a successful

will come from.
How can I vote for you if I do not know you?

I just tried to get to the Imperium Arts Roman costume page from the

service still exists?

Yes, Vespasia Pollia and I have done so in the last couple of years.
This year's rite had to be canceled due to illness (mine) and a
pressing publisher's deadline (hers). However, I'd be happy to answer
questions about our adaptation in private e-mail.

Someone stole the imperiumarts.com domain name.
Cassius has moved the site to imperiumarts.net, but not everything is
there yet.

Salvete Romans, et Californians.
Antonia Cornelia Octavia held another gathering at her home Sunday.
As usual it was well done, and graciously hosted.
There was a ritual for Saturnalia, Mediterranean food,
a reading from Ovid's poetry, a dissertation on the origins
of Christmas and Saturnalia.
Gifts were exchanged and I passed out sestercii to
all the guests. While both Cornelius and Antonia Cornelia
were kind enough to include me as one of the guests, in their reports
the fact is I could only stay for an hour.
Now what puzzles me is the fact why more Californian citizens do not attend.
I understand why members of CAL Superior cannot, distance and all, but there
is no reason that CAL Inferior members cannot. Granted it is a 2-3 hour
drive, for some, but I
suggested if you get a chance attend the next one. We have members in other
provinces
screaming for personal contact among citizens, and we have it right here in
CAL Inferior.
Join us in Downy, January 14 at the Olive Garden Italian restaurant at 6:30
p.m.
If you need directions contact me and I'll supply them.
CAL citizens, get more involved in Nova Roma. You will be glad
you did.
Valete,
Q. Fabius Maximus
Proconsul

Citizens of Nova Roma;
In answer to a Militarium question regarding the education of the
average Legionary, the following is referred as a response. I include
this on the Main List as a continuing effort to relieve the Main List of
the repititous political discussions, that prevail during this season of
our year.
Reference;
"Handbook To Life In Ancient Rome" by Adkins and Adkins
"In early Republican times boys were taught to read, write and use
weapons by thier fathers, and they accompanied thier fathers to
religious ceremonies and public occasions including the Senate if thier
father was a member---from the age of 17 they spent the campaigning
season with the army."
"From about the 3rd Century B.C. a Roman system of education developed
which was different from the Greek tradition, often with a Greek slave
or freedman for teacher--the "litterator" or the 'ludi magister." The
education was based mainly on the study of Latin and Greek literature in
order to produce effective speakers. The earliest education from 7 to
11 years involved the teaching to both girls and boys of reading,
writing and arithmetic, and Greek was sometimes taught by a
"paidagogus." Secondary education for boys from 12 to 15 years
consisted of teaching of literary subjects in Latin and Greek by a
"grammarian" both for general education and as preparation for rhetoric.
>From the 1st Century B.C. contemporary poets such as Virgil, were also
studied. From the 2nd Century B.C. rheoric was taught by Greek teachers
in secondary education to pupils over 16, but a Latin style of rhetoric
became increasingly predominant."

ANTONIVS GRYLLVS GRAECVS PONTIFEX OMNIBVS QVIRITIBVS
Today is a 'dies endotercisus' which is a day that function as 'dies
nefastus' (no legal action can take place) in the morning and 'dies
comitialis' (both legal action and popular assemblies can take place) in the
afternoon.
Today is a festival of Consus, the God of grain and granaries, at his temple
on the Aventine. As the aniversary of dedication of the temple was on August
21st, this celebration be the aniversary of a later restoration, maybe by
Augustus. Consus will be again honoured in the Consualia of December
(December 15th), which probably marks the end of the sowing of Autumn.
The month of December is sacred to Vesta.

Ave,
I emailed out the notice for the meeting on Jan 14
last week which included the address and phone number
of the Olive Garden in Downey. I will be sending out
reminder notices on Jan 1st. Cives can either email
me or Quintus Fabius for directions. So you see, Ca
cives, there's no excuse now not to join us! Really,
I hope to see more of you.

Salvete cives et amici,
The book that Marcus Minucius posted the reference from, Handbook to Life in
Ancient Rome is excellent! I just purchased it this weekend, and it's packed
full of great information. It's an excellent reference guide to all things
Roman. From popular topics, like issues concerning military battle tactics
to less popular but no less interesting topics like wall plaster. It's all
there! A must in my opinion for all citizens.
If I have sparked your interest you can buy it from the Macellum and get a
wonderful book while supporting the res publica. I wish I noticed this
sooner for I could of made my purchase from here. =)
