Harris, Walken Cast In Caesar Mini
Wed, Jan 30, 2002 01:50 AM PDT
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Richard Harris, Christopher Walken, Valeria
Golino and Chris Noth ("Sex and the City" ) are joining the cast of TNT
miniseries "Julius Caesar."
The $23 million project about the rise and fall of the Roman emporor will
star Jeremy Sisto ("Six Feet Under") in the title role, with Harris as
Lucius Cornelius Sulla, the Roman general who won the first full-scale Roman
civil war in the first century B.C. before enforcing constitutional reforms
that strengthened the Roman republic.
Walken will play Marcus Porcius Cato, a leader of a group of conservative
Roman senators who fought against Caesar to preserve the democratic power of
the republic. Noth plays Roman General Pompey, with Golino portraying
Caesar's wife, Calpurnia.
"I am thrilled that we were able to assemble such a stellar cast, who along
with [director] Uli Edel will make 'Julius Caesar' a not-to-be-missed
event," says Lorenzo Minoli, the miniseries' executive producer.
Production on the four-hour miniseries will start in Malta and Bulgaria in
February.

After fighting her way to the top of the box-office charts in The Mummy and its big-budget sequel, Rachel Weisz is taking on a new tough-girl role - as Roman Queen Boudicca. Weisz will team up with fellow British star Dougray Scott for the flick - dubbed Warrior Queen. The actress will play feisty rebellion leader Boudicca, with Scott taking the role of her macho lover. Avete Omnes,
It brings me much pleasure to come before you, citizens of Nova Roma to discuss some current events and plans that I have in store for this month. As many of you know, I am Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix, Junior Consul and as such I hold the Fasces for the month of February. And before I begin to get into the rest of my speech I would like to once again thank all of you who have voted for me in the December Elections, I will do my best not to let you down.
This month, as some of you might be aware of is not a good month for voting, however, I hope that our Augur Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus will be able to give me a green light to summon the Senate and Comitia Populi and Comitia Centuritia sometime late in the month, if the Auguries are acceptable. If the Auguries are acceptable I have a few issues that I feel need to get promulgated. This post will briefly discribe my intent and in the coming week I will post the drafts that my staff and I prepared for a discussion period of a week. Once the week is completed my staff and I will make any additional revisions and then by that time, we should be able to summon the appropriate Comita and hopefully pass the laws.
The issues that I intend to promulgate this month are:
1. Changing the Constitution so that the Macellum is under the day to day supervision of the Curule Aediles. - Senate and Comitia Centuriata
2. Appointing Governors - Senate issue.
3. Call for volunteers to serve as governors (where we need them) - Main List announcement.
4. Translation law - Comitia Populi
5. Century Points Revision - Comitia Centuriata.
6. Senatus Consultum on the presentation of Prospective Senators
7. Revision to the Lex Iunia (Term limits) - Comitia Populi
8. Extension on the Tax deadline for an additional month.
There might be some additional items, but I think this would be a suitable first month of activity. If I have forgotten anything I will post its text when I post the entire agenda.
Before I end this post I would like to thank my staff for their time and diligence in assisting me in preparing these laws for your consideration. My sincere thanks to each of you, Senator Decius Iunius Palladius, Praetor Pompeia Cornelia, ProPraetor Lucius Sicinius Drusus, Quaestor Gaius Popilius your assistance has been greatly appreciated and I cannot underestimate your contributions in the past month.
With this speech coming to a conclusion I would like to state to all of you, citizens of Nova Roma if you have questions, concerns, or issues please feel free to come and speak to me. I am always available to you via email, AOL IM, Yahoo Messenger or even through the telephone. I will try to answer your questions or concerns as quickly as possible. My contact information is available in the Album Gentium or the IM database. Please feel free to use it.
Very Respectfully,
Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix
Consul of Nova Roma

[novaroma] Provincial Census |

Salvete Omnes,
On the matter of a Provincial and a National census I think it would be a very good idea if it were to do the following:
1.Indicate interests that citizens feel are not currently available which has caused them to wander off.
2.Indicated people who have genuinely lost interest and no longer wish to be in Nova Roma.
But this does not appear to bre the intention. First of all SOME of us who are rather quiet on the lists and hold no offices are NEW CITIZENS. New citizens are PROHIBITED from running for office until we have been citizens for at LEAST 6 MONTHS. So what I can mainly do is read e lists and converse on them, which I do from time to time based on my interests.
As to taxes I have ASKED REPEATEDLY what the tax structure is, when they are required to be paid and how we will be notified. And the response time and again is we are still working out the details. I would pay the taxes if told the required information.
And regarding attendance at events etc, I live 5 hours from virtually ANYONE else in the Provincia. Right now I can't afford to go that far and spend money on hotel rooms or my husband and I won't be able to take our 10th anniversary trip to Italy and Greece. We have been planning this for a long time and being at the ancient temples of our Religio forefathers and walking among the ruins of Pompeii and Ostia are deeply connecting to Ancient Roman Heritage in a way that rubbing elbows with others in the U.S. can't entirely replace. I WANT to meet more Nova Romans but geographically I live closer to Canada (Detroit) than to the rest of the Midwest and the remainder of the Lacus Magni Provincia.I hate living in a backwater but my hubby and I have good jobs and a house here. Also if we prohibit people on the fringes from maintaining citizenship, we will never spread beyond areas of Nova Roma that are already well established. This means that some of us would LIKE to be there but CAN'T be there! This should not be held against us!
Also I am not as active on the Provincia list because it seems to be almost entirely Military reenactors and I am not much for things Military. My interests lie predominately in the Religio Romana and in art, culture and philosophy. So I don't say much about Military renactments nor get all fired up to attend them often.
As a new citizen I am still casting about for my "niche" where I feel my interests and talents most lie so I don't commit to something that bores me to tears and that I give up on.
But it seems that Nova Roma expects its new Cives to hit the ground running and wait 6 mos. all at the same time. We simply can't do both at once.So what is it EXACTLY that you want from us?
Bene vale,

>From the proposals I've seen, the second option you listed is usually one of
the motivating factors. Someone (I forget who) brought up our main problem
with a census, which is that we are struggling between an identity as a club
and an identity as a nation. A club occasionally drops people who don't show
up to meetings and other activities off of its membership roster. A nation
simply takes a count of its citizens and, for the most part, leaves the
question of retaining membership in the group in their hands.
> First of all SOME of us who are rather quiet on the lists and hold no offices

Though it often seems like it, holding office is not the be-all and end-all of
Nova Roman activities. You've taken a good first step toward finding some
others by poking the Musarum list for some answers.
> So what I can mainly do is read e lists and converse on them, which I do from
> time to time based on my interests.
And there's nothing whatsoever wrong with limiting your involvement to exactly
that, if that's what you want. IMO, the civis who chooses to do nothing but
make offerings at his/her lararium and occasionally catch up with Nova Roman
news is doing fine. Of course, we as a group will value more highly the person
who spends time and effort helping to build our institutions and sharing ideas
with the rest of us, but that shouldn't exclude the quiet civis from
citizenship.
The main reason there's so much said about inactive cives is that we've had
quite a number of people make a commitment by running or volunteering for
office--and I include those who are patres et matres familias in that number--
but have subsequently dropped off the map without so much as a "goodbye".
These people do cause us problems because we rely upon them to do their jobs,
and they don't do them. So, one of the primary goals of a census is to
discover which of them are still around and willing to perform the duties they
volunteered to perform, and to remove from office (though not citizenship)
those who aren't.
> As to taxes I have ASKED REPEATEDLY what the tax structure is, when they are
> required to be paid and how we will be notified. And the response time and

Taxes are $12 US, and they're due by the last day in February. ( see
http://www.novaroma.org/tabularium/senate/2001-07-18-viii.html for the relevant
senatusconsultum) I believe that the necessary infrastructure for tax
collection is still being worked out, but will soon be announced. Also, it's
quite likely that the deadline will be extended for this year due to the short
notice.
> And regarding attendance at events etc, I live 5 hours from virtually ANYONE
> else in the Provincia. Right now I can't afford to go that far and spend
> money on hotel rooms...
I understand those problems well. We're still a very disparate population, and
I expect that there are many cives for whom it is difficult to see other cives.
> ...or my husband and I won't be able to take our 10th anniversary trip to
> Italy and Greece.
Now I'm envious. When and where are you going? I hope you'll tell us about
the trip once it's happened. And, perhaps some of our European cives would be
willing and able to arrange to meet you while you're over there and show you
around a little?
> We have been planning this for a long time and being at the ancient temples

I'd have said, "can't come close to replacing." There's something deeply
inspiring about seeing the ancient templa, villae, et cetera in situ.
> Also if we prohibit people on the fringes from maintaining citizenship, we
> will never spread beyond areas of Nova Roma that are already well
> established. This means that some of us would LIKE to be there but CAN'T be
> there! This should not be held against us!
I agree entirely, and hope that nobody does hold that against you. I certainly
don't begrudge you the right to live where you want, and wouldn't ask you to
move. Though it would be nice to have things otherwise, Nova Roma is not so
important that we can or should ask people to completely re-order their lives
for Her.
> Also I am not as active on the Provincia list because it seems to be almost
> entirely Military reenactors and I am not much for things Military. My

Though she is substantially more inactive than you due to a wide variety of
reasons (number one being our daughter), my wife is also a lover of ancient
art. Hopefully, someday she and you can discuss things like fresco styles and
creating period tempera paint. I enjoy talking about both culture and
philosophy. What interests you about them? Are you drawn to any particular
philosophical school?
> As a new citizen I am still casting about for my "niche" where I feel my
> interests and talents most lie so I don't commit to something that bores me
> to tears and that I give up on.
And, as a new civis, this is exactly what you should be doing. Unfortunately,
as a primarily online community, Nova Roma's lists and other venues require
constant energy to be put into them. Otherwise, the lists grow quiet and
people find other things to do. The more people interested in a variety of
things, posting their thoughts and works (in the form of poetry, pictures,
etc.), that we have, the more the load is shared and the more we actually
become a community. This is far more important than who's a tribunus plebis
this year.
> But it seems that Nova Roma expects its new Cives to hit the ground running

> what is it EXACTLY that you want from us?
Be active. That doesn't mean running for office, taking oaths, or making long
speeches. It means sharing your interests with us, getting to know a few
people, and finding a few friends. You mentioned that you write poetry on the
Musarum list. Would you mind sharing some, either on this list or that one?
I'm sure that I'm not the only one who would like to read it.

[novaroma] ATTN [Religio Romana]: Kalendis Februaris (on February 1st) |
From: |
"Antonio Grilo" <amg@cris.inesc.pt> |

ANTONIVS GRYLLVS GRAECVS PONTIFEX OMNIBVS QVIRITIBVS
Today is a "dies nefastus" (N), a day when legal action cannot take place.
This is the Kalends of Februarius. Today a Pontifex Minor calls the people
to the Curia Calabra. The Pontifex Minor and the Rex Sacrorum offer a
sacrifice to Iuno where Ianus is also invoked. Then the Pontifex Minor
announces the Nonas of the month for the fifth day of the month:
"Die Quinti te kalo Iuno Covella"
"Iuno Covella, I call you on the fifth day"
The Regina Sacrorum also sacrifices to Iuno at the Regia.
Februarius is a month dedicated to the dead, when purification rites must be
performed. In fact the word "februum" was used by the ancestors to denote a
purification instrument in general [Ovid, Fasti, ii.19 seq.]. As such, the
name of the month is linked to the purification of the ground with strips of
hide performed by the Luperci at the Lupercalia. Ovid also says that the
Pontifices ask the Rex Sacrorum and the Flamen Dialis for woollen cloths
called "februa", but it is not clear if this ceremony takes place today. If
we link Oviudius' statement to Varro's [Varro, De Lingua Latina, 6.13], this
could be also at the festival announcement on the Nones of February (the
announcement of the regular festivals of the month was performed on the
Nones of each month by the Rex Sacrorum), - as he calls this day
'februatus' -, or even as part of the Lupercalia itself.
Today is the aniversary of a restauration of the shrines of Iuno Sospita
(Iuno the Saviour) on the Palatine Hill. Iuno Sospita was specially
worshipped in the Latin town of Lanuvium. When the Romans granted Lanuvium
the Roman citizenship in 338 BC, they officially adopted the cult. The cult
came under the control of the pontifices and the consules had to make an
anual sacrifice to her at Lanuvium.
Iuno Sospita was depicted wearing a goat skin, with the horns drawn over her
head to form an helmet. She carried a spear and shield and wore shoes turned
up at the toes. Sometimes a snake stands up in front of her. Her full title
was Iuno Sospita Mater Regina (Iuno the Saviour Mother Queen).
At Lanuvium, each year, blindfolded girls entered her sacred grove, bearing
gifts of barley cakes for a snake that lived there. If the gifts were
accepted, the girls were proven to be virgins and the fertility of the year
was assured.
This day is also associated to the cult of Alernus or Helernus. Today, the
Pontifices and a multitude of worshipers bring offerings to him at the
entrance of his grove. His grove may have been by the Tiber below the
Palatine. Festus [Festus, de verborum significatione, s.v. furvum] records
that a black ox was sacrificed 'A(e)terno', where perhaps one should read
'Elerno'; if so, Elernus may have been a primitive god of the underworld.
Ovid [Ovid, Fasti, vi.101] also says that the nymph Carna, goddess of the
hinges celebrated on June 1st, was born in his grove.
Today also, a sheep is offered before the temple of Vesta, then another one
before the temple Iuppiter Tonans, and finally another one before the temple
of Iuppiter Capitolinus [Ovid, Fasti, ii.67-72].

As I've red recently in book Rome and Panonnia (unfortunately I can't
remember name of writer) the intial pre-home of Boii was not Bohemia.
Boii as a celtic tribe had moved to central and western europe from
east. Result of this moving was Brennus's invasion to Italia and
celtic conquest a part of Asia minor (Galata)and I guess that celtic
army had conquested Delphy too.
Writer also said that this moving was caused by another nations that
pressed celtic tribes in front of their own group. I don't know if
she can proofe it with Celts, but later this situation had really
occured. I mean Germans pressed by Vandals pressed by Huns.
But this is not result of my own research so don't take it seriously
too :-)

I saw what looked like a movie about that last night on cable. I
couldn't help but be frustrated at all the inacuraccies in the arms
and armor of the depicted Romans. I also cringed when I saw
the battle scenes because they looked nothing like the way I was
taught Romans fought. I hope this new movie will at least try to
be more historically accurate and doesn't end up like "Gladiator",
which, while it give a good "feel" of Roma, doesn't depict it nearly
accurately enough.
Any more news on the rumored "Caesar"?

Thank you for your support. I cannot help but feel useless
sometimes because I don't know enough or otherwise can't help
with the more "pressing" issues. My only alternative would be to
help on little things. My class schedual is more hectic this
semester so I can't participate as much in days past, so little
things like this can let me still be doing something for NR. That,
and I'd like to do something that actually might succeed, unlike
my earlier attempt at getting land for NR, which also isn't a
"pressing" issue and hasn't really gone anywhere.

Actually, Ridley tried. He tried harder then anybody else I have worked
with.
As for getting Roman realism, it is hard. Unless you have a Roman historian
who is the production designer, or listens to his adviser, (NOT) you are
going to end up the messes we do have in cinema.
One reason I joined NR, was to raise funding for an accurate depiction of
Roman lifestyle and warfare. I plan to one day raise our own truly
Republican Roman legio, but that takes money. And I'm not rich enough yet.
I did a quick scan of the Caesar script for $1500. It was loaded with
inaccuracies. I cleaned up the major ones, as best as I could. But they
didn't want to hire me as adviser, probably since I have my own Caesar script
out there, they didn't want to fund a rival. As for the Boudicca vehicle,
the less said about Wietz and company, the better.
