Salve,

I was just wondering how the coins sales are going? I
am thinking of ordering a second batch for myself
because I like them so much! I carry my "lucky" coin
around with me always, its the first one I touched
when I got them. (Sounds kind of silly, doesn't it?)

Do you have many left? Are there any plans to mint
another coin?

Thanks

Salve Valeria,

I've just started to get active in Nova Roma, but I don't see anything that
should make you feel excluded. We're all fairly new here, so it is up to us to
make Nova Roma what we want it to be. You don't necessarily have to be an
elected official, you can organize events or participate in discussion. As far
as the taxes go, I have only heard that they are *going* to require them soon,
but not yet. As to time and expenses, I completely agree with you, I just
bought a house and am taking classes this semester, so I am short on both. And
I hope you make it to your trip, it sounds like a lot of fun! I hope you will
have lots of stories and pictures to share with the rest of us, when you get
back.

But there are other ways you can contribute. If you can't travel, you can
still communicate on the list. Don't forget that religio was very important to
the execitus romanus - augurs had to be taken before pitching camp and before
making battle, altars had to be dedicated after victories. An expert in
religio would help make the military part of Nova Roma more complete.

I would like to see a Nova Roma gathering like a recreation of a whole Roman
fort, including the military, civillian, government, and religious aspects.
Roman camps often grew into towns where merchants would set up markets, and
soldiers and civillians would mingle and trade. I think that would be a great
way to realize our love for Romanitas, to demonstrate Roman culture and
history, and to share with others the experience.

As to your location, I don't think it has anything with being in Detroit, just
that Nova Roma is new and there are not many members yet. You'll have to just
look for them, or get more people interested. And I think there are some
groups in Canada, so you could try looking over the border too.

Ambrosius

for at LEAST 6 MONTHS. So what I can mainly do is read e lists and converse on
them, which I do from time to time based on my interests.

else in the Provincia. Right now I can't afford to go that far and spend money
on hotel rooms or my husband and I won't be able to take our 10th anniversary

at the ancient temples of our Religio forefathers and walking among the ruins
of Pompeii and Ostia are deeply connecting to Ancient Roman Heritage in a way
that rubbing elbows with others in the U.S. can't entirely replace. I WANT to
meet more Nova Romans but geographically I live closer to Canada (Detroit)
than to the rest of the Midwest and the remainder of the Lacus Magni
Provincia.I hate living in a backwater but my hubby and I have good jobs and a
house here. Also if we prohibit people on the fringes from maintaining
citizenship, we will never spread beyond areas of Nova Roma that are already
well established. This means that some of us would LIKE to be there but CAN'T
be there! This should not be held against us!
> Also I am not as active on the Provincia list because it seems to be almost
entirely Military reenactors and I am not much for things Military. My
interests lie predominately in the Religio Romana and in art, culture and
philosophy. So I don't say much about Military renactments nor get all fired
up to attend them often.

interests and talents most lie so I don't commit to something that bores me to
tears and that I give up on.

Salve Frater

I am interested in the premise of this story too :). I saw a brief
portion of the movie when I was very young. The scene most memorable
is when the legionaries tied this *queen* to a post and proceeded to
flog her with unrelenting effort....but I don't know who this *queen*
was historically...I know the ancient Romans ran into a few female
foes, but I didn't know there was anyone from the Norse areas.

Quintus Fabius, do you know?

Subject: Re: [novaroma] the Romans and Groundhog day.
From: qfabiusmaxmi@aol.com

Salvete
It's Feb 2nd. Groundhog Day
The Roman legions, during the conquest of Germania, brought this tradition to
the Germans, who picked it up and later concluded that if the sun made an
appearance on Candlemas Day, an animal, the hedgehog, would cast a shadow,
thus predicting six more weeks of bad weather, which they interpolated as the
length of the "Second Winter."

The groundhog tradition stems from similar beliefs associated with Candlemas
Day and the days of early Christians in Europe, and for centuries the custom
was to have the clergy bless candles and distribute them to the people. Even
then, it marked a milestone in the winter and the weather that day was
important.

According to an old English song:
> If Candlemas be fair and bright,
> Come, Winter, have another flight;
> If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
> Go Winter, and come not again.
>
According to an old Scotch couplet:
>
> If Candlemas Day is bright and clear,
> There'll be twa (two) winters in the year.

Another variation of the Scottish rhyme:
>
> If Candlemas day be dry and fair,
> The half o' winter to come and mair,
> If Candlemas day be wet and foul,
> The half of winter's gone at Yule.

Pennsylvania's earliest settlers were Germans and they found groundhogs to in
profusion in many parts of the state. They determined that the groundhog,
resembling the European hedgehog, was a most intelligent and sensible animal
and therefore decided that if the sun did appear on February 2nd, so wise an
animal as the groundhog would see its shadow and hurry back into its
underground home for another six weeks of winter.
The Germans recited:
> For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day,
> So far will the snow swirl until the May.

This passage may be the one most closely represented by the first
Punxsutawney Groundhog Day observances because there were references to the
length of shadows in early Groundhog Day predictions.

Edictum Propraetoricium XLI about corrected titles in the Academiae
Thules and a corrected name of the Academia Thules it itself.

During my term as a Propraetor Thules I have made a few ;-)
appointments in the Academia and during my work with the Academia
Thules, the length of the titles and the change of the profile of the
Academia itself has made it clear that these things has lead to a
need for a change of titles and the name of the Academia.

The Academia Thules is governed by the following edicta: Edictum
Propraetoricium XII about the Approved NOVA ROMA ACADEMIA THULES and
Edictum Propraetoricium XVI about Additional Rules and Guidelines
regarding the organization of Academia Novae Romae in Thule.

I. The Academia was in the beginning called "Nova Roma Academia
Thules" (N.R.A.T.), I have decided to now make it's new name official
and it is from now on call it "Academia Thules ad Studia Romana
Antiqua et Nova", for short "Academia Thules" (A.T.).

II. The official titles of the governing board was "Tresviri Novae
Romae Academiae in Thule" which hereby is changed to "Tresviri
Academia Thules". The members of "Tresviri Novae Romae Academiae in
Thule" were called "Triumvir Novae Romae Academiae in Thule" which
hereby is changed to "Triumvir Academia Thules"

III. The Academia Thules have some assistants of the Procurator of
Scibae rank, they will from now on be changed from their old title to
their new as described below:
The "old" tile was: Scriba "task name" Academiae Novae Romae in
Thule, it is changed to: Scriba "task name" Academia Thules.

As in the following example: "Scriba ad Res Externas Academiae Novae
Romae in Thule" will hereby be changed to "Scriba ad Res Externas
Academia Thules".

VII. This edictum becomes effective immediately.

Given February 2nd, in the year of the consulship of Marcus Octavius
Germanicus and Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix 2755 AUC.

Edictum Propraetoricium XLII addendum about a corrected title in the
Academia Thules

My recent appointments in the Academia Thules has lead to the
conclusion that one of the existing Scriba titles must also change as
a result from appointing a "Scriba Exploratrix Secunda".

I. The title Scriba Explorator (Research Scriba) of Academia Thules
ad Studia Romana Antiqua et Nova that was held by Honorable Caius
Puteus Germanicus (as was his name at that time) is changed to
"Scriba Explorator Primus Academia Thules" (First Research Scriba) to
also be held by Honorable Caius Cornelius Puteanus (as is the name of
the same person since his adoption into Gens Cornelia).

II. This edictum becomes effective immediately.

Subject: [novaroma] Etruscan Women
From: "Claudius Salix Davianus" <davius_sanctex@terra.es>
Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 14:59:36 +0100
Salvete cives Novae Romae:

It is known that in Greece, Rome and Carthago women had a secondary rôle [yes, some of yours will discuss this to me ;-)], however by no means this seems to have been the general case in antiquity, we have many proofs that among Etruscans women were more outstanding and women had a prominent social rôle. Naturally this was not very well understood by external observers:

For example Teopompus of Chios 4th BC (mentioned by Atheneus in book 43 of its "Historiae") mentions the following thing: "Among Tyrrhenians exist the custom that women are common property. These pay much attention to the care of their body and make exercise with naked body. They do not eat with its husbands, but with those they are by chance and they drink to the health of that they want. Then they are great drinkers and very beautiful. Tyrrhenians raise all children that come to the world without knowing from what father comes each one. Also these [children] live just as quies they raise them... When women are in a meeting of friends or family and has let drink and wants to lie down, the servants, with the lights still ignited, bring sometimes hetairai to them, sometimes very beautiful boys, others even women... ".

Other authors such Posidonius, also give a slanted image, criticizing the sybaritism and the wild style of life of the Etruscans, as well as the custom of lay with the women under a same "blanket" during the meals. Also it seems that servants walked naked [another great lost for the civilization:-)], at least until they arrived at the maturity. Stories like these anything flattering, created the prejudice that Greek and Roman they had about the Etruscans.

In my opinion these opinions of the Greeks are without a doubt exaggerated. If we see at the burial paintings of the Etruscan tombs in effect we see women eating next to the men, but they could be perfectly a marriage (somewhat incompressible for a Greek since they ate aside from their women). With respecto to reproach of a "excessively free" love [ selecting partnaire at random... ] does not seem very sustainable, since the innumerable burial inscriptions (many of them are true genealogical trees) seem obsessed with the lineage and the familiar origin. The internal estructure of the Etruscan tombs also speaks of the obsession by the familiar organization, with an important difference with respect to Rome and Greece: woman lies still on next to her husband with equality, and has an own seat in the lobby of the tomb, that came to be a reproduction of the house. Perhaps we could conclude that the Etruscan woman - unlike the Roman women, they participated in the receptions and the official conversations of the gentleman of the house. At least in his own house it seems that the Etruscan women sent so much as their husband.

Like all Etruscan men, women had its own praenomen (Clelia, Ati, Larthia..) and not as among Romans, being simply a "Claudia",
a "fabia" or a "sabina". In addition such as Titus Livius [the great fiction novelist :-)] writes: Etruscan women liked to leave house and did not blush by the glances of the men[for some reason, Etruscan women had that obsession to make exercise and to take care of their aspect] unlike modesty that exhibits the republican Roman women. According to Livius they also particpate actively in policy ...

From: "Chantal G. Whittington" <aerdensrw@yahoo.com>
Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 11:17:59 -0800 (PST)
I just got out of my medical transcription class,
which is why this question is on my mind...Yes,
friends, I will be insufferable on Saturday afternoons
for until May. (g)

Is there any kind of archaeological, military, or
historical information about how/if the Romans kept
medical records?

I just got through typing two H and P's, 2 surgery
reports, lab reports, and discharge summaries...I know
the Romans would not have kept the same sort of
records that we do, but I figured that, since they
were such meticulous record-keepers, there might be a
record of something. Or is it mainly in the same
style as the Hippocratic writings?:

1st day of illness - Patient complained of fever.
Appetite good, urine clear.
2nd day - nocturnal sweats, etc. etc.

Thanks!
