Salvete,

On Sunday March 3rd, there is going to be a "Gallery Talk" concerning
Roman portraiture at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The talks are given
by either curators or independent scholars and free with museum
admission. Would anyone in Nova Britannia be interested in going?
Admission is $14, $12 for college students and seniors. There may be an
outside possibility of a group rate if enough people are interested. I
know this is short notice, but it looks to be a fun and interesting
event. The talk will last only about 1 hour, so we'll have plenty of
time to meet, greet and wander about the MFA on our own. The details of
the talk are below:

Sunday, March 3, 2002

2 p.m. Gallery Talk: "Real" Faces: Roman Portraiture
By: Jennifer Ledig Heuser
Conventional wisdom claims that Greek portraiture was idealized and
Roman veristic. This talk looks at the tradition of Roman portraiture
throughout the Empire during the Republican period and asks how genuine
the attempt was to capture the likenesses of particular individuals.

Meet at the Sharf Information Center

Aren't those coins nice? My husband is a coin collector and he's
pretty picky about his assessment of mintages...he looked at them,
and thought that Marcus Cassius did a super job.....

Salvete,

I have been offline for almost four weeks with a computer problem. (Two weeks
of trying unsuccessfullly to solve it over the phone, then the time to send
it away, have it reformatted, and have it shipped back.)

I'm trying to catch up on emails and list postings now. Great to be back! :)

I'd be interested since I don't live that far north of Boston.

Subject: [novaroma] NR Coin and Flag Update
From: cassius622@aol.com
Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 21:39:56 EST
Salvete,

Although I have had some delay from work and computer problems, I would like
to announce that ALL Nova Roma flag and coin orders that have been shipped
out. This includes both US and overseas orders.

Any US orders placed less than a week ago, or overseas orders placed less
than two weeks ago may not have *reached* me yet, but will be sent promptly
upon arrival.

NR COIN UPDATE:

Out of our original 5,000 NR coins we now have approximately 2,400 left in
stock. This means we've sold 2,600 coins, a gain of $1,300.00! As has been
prearranged, an amount of this will remain in our 'treasury reserve' account
to guarantee the value of the coins, and the rest will go toward the purchase
of new coins. The new purchase will probably have to be done this summer at
the rate things are going!

NOVA ROMA FLAG UPDATE:

Out of 150 flags produced we have sold a total of 110, a gain of $709.50 to
the treasury. The forty flags left should comfortably hold us for another
three months or so, but I will probably place another order next month to be
sure that there will be no delay or shortage.

Additional info:

I will be placing a request before the Senate shortly to have a quantity of
flags and coins shipped to each Provincia, in the hopes of making NR symbols
more readily available for provincial events and gatherings.

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus
Senator, Pontifex Maximus

Ave, Tasia,

I've loaned out the books and don't have the exact titles, but I
recommend the two volume Byzantine Empire history by the Russian
scholar Vasiliev. Emphasizes the Empire in the East after
Constantine, but generally very thorough and full of good info.

Citizens of Nova Roma;

I send this letter to you at the request of Maximus Mecurius Minucius
Gladius. He is the creator and Lead Gladiator in a reenactment
Gladiator School formed last year. He is a member of the XXIVth and an
Associate Member of the XXth Legions, and to my mind, a gentleman of the
first class. He is a registered member of the "Socci" which is an
Auxiliary Unit of the Sodalitas Militarium for those interested in the
Roman Military, but who either do not wish to join Nova Roma, or cannot
join Nova Roma for whatever reasons. He has been sponsored for NR
citizenship by myself, and has recieved no final determination from the
Censores of Nova Roma as to the status of that sponsorship. He is not
on the web, and if anyone would wish to contact him by snail-mail which
is his perferred means of communication, you may certainly do so, his
address being contained wthin the below letter (dispatch). Any related
"E-Mail" messages in reply to this "dispatch" will be forwarded to him
via snail-mail by myself. His letter follows:
______________________________________

February 12, 2002 (2755)

My Dear Citizens of Nova Roma:

I am writing this dispatch which will be graciously conveyed by my very
dear friend and colleague James Mathews (a.k.a. Senator Marcus Minucius
Audens). There was a great deal of acrimonious discourse over the
internet last year, specifically relating to miscommunication of events,
and many "ruffled feathers" over who had purview over certain events in
specific regions, namely the Media Atlantica. I am writing now in an
effort to illuminate, to explain, and to hopefully be concillitory, and
to put to rest any animosity or ill will which may linger.

First, by way of introduction, I am John J. Ebel, an attorney from East
Hampton, New York. I entered the world of reenacting through the Civil
War, joining a group known as the 57th Virginia Infantry, Company "B."
I enjoyed modest success in two years of being a part of that group,
attaining the rank of Company Quartermaster. In a very short time I
became disillusioned with the group. They engaged in a great deal of
back-biting, sniping and snobbishness, often directed at thier own
members or toward fellow reenactors. I resigned in disgust, and sought
to create my own reenactng group.

Since I am an avid "Roma-phile" (but by no means do I purport to be an
expert) I decided to capitalize on the free publicity provided by the
film "Gladiator," thinking that the time to "strike" and form a
Gladitorial reenactor's group to be prime. I had earlier joined Legio
XXIV, after making the acquaintance of Mr. George Metz, (a.k.a.
Commander Gallio Velius Marsallas), a man whom I consider a dear and
valued friend. I inquired of Gallio whether or not there was in
existance at that time (February, 2001) any active gladitorial
reenactor's group in existance. George replied that to his knowledge
there was not. I further inquired of Gallio whether or not such an
"impression" would be welcome in his unit, and he enthusiastically
replied in the affirmative. I then contacted the Commander of Legio XX,
Mr. Matthew Amt,(a.k.a. Cmdr. Quintus) to whom I had been directed by
Gallio to defer to as to authenticity, and joined Legio XX as an
Associate Member, and made essentially the same inquiries to Quintus.
He too, expressed his support, adding only the caveat that he would
expect a vigorous attempt at authenticity (within reasonable and
practicable limits), and that such an impression would also be welcome
at the events he hosted. Armed with that encouraging support. I
embarked on a very conscientous process of scholarly research on the
matter, determined not to be merely a "Russell Crowe Wannabe." I chose
the Praenomen "Maximus" for no other reason than I like the name. That
is my choice, and I firmly reserve the right to go by any Roman moniker
I choose.

My first event was "Roman Days" held at the Marietta Mansion in Glenn
Dale, Maryland. For obvious reasons, I approached the event hosted by
Quintus, and Legio XX with great humility and trepidition. I knew full
well that I would be in the presence of experienced and specialized
Roman reenactors, and that they would be scrutinizing me as the "new kid
on the block." To my great delight, my "Ludus Magnus Gladitore,"
provincial gladitorial training camp "impression" was well recieved by
the crowd, but more importantly, the very gracious comments I recieved
from members of Quintus' Legio XX, and from Quintus himself, reinforced
for me the belief that I was on the right track. Since then the ranks
of the "Ludus Magnus" have grown steadily and incrementally, and we have
drawn members of Legio VI and others. We hosted a very well recieved
event at the Nassau County International Cultural Heritage Festival held
at Eisenhower Park in Hempsead, New York, in August, 2001. We also
attended a nice military time-line event in the Poconos last year. We
intend to return to these events this year.

Senator Audens sought to sponsor me in Nova Roma last year. As of this
moment, I still do not know if I have been accepted, rejected, or
summarily ignored. I do not presently have on-line communication
ability from my home. Frankly, I do not know if I ever will. I simply
have the utmost contempt for the impersonal world of computers, E-Mail,
"chat groups," and "cyber-things" generally. I do not feel that it is a
secure mode of commuication, and I believe it has created a cold,
impersonal world of "cyber-snobbism" whereby individuals who are utterly
taken with this mode of communication, seem to hide behind the security
of thier computer terminals and snipe away at each other. I am NOT
accusing Nova Romans of such a mindset. I simply state that I eschew
all things "cyber" whenever I can. I found the same thing to be true of
my former Civil War confederates. I am at a loss to explain or
understand why men and women who claim to embrace antiquity are so
adament about thier insistance that members of such groups communicate
exclusively via the internet. Alexander Graham Bell's wonderful
invention (the TELEPHONE) still works very well, as does the United
States Postal Service, and it is by this medium that I choose to
communicate. I am only availing myself of Senator Auden's gracious
offer to third-party convey this message to Nova Romans via the internet
in an effort to hold out the olive branch of conciliation, and to make
this invitation to any Nova Romans interested in joining our group as
either active or passive participants.

I reenact as a gladiator to honor a magnificent civilization whose
influence affects us all and reaches forward through the millenia. I
also do so to dispel any of the widely held myths and misconceptions
that the general public labors under both as to Rome generally, and the
gladitorial experience specifically. We stage mock fights which are at
once exciting and informative. We speak to schools and civic groups,
entertain at public event, much like our predessors of 2000 years ago
did, and we have an enjoyable time doing so, in the company of bright ,
motivated and cordial people. Indeed, I can say with absolute
conviction that I have made friendships and associations incident to
these activities that I am certain will continue throughout my life.
When I am too old and infirm to engage in the great arenas, I will adapt
my "impression" and serve as Lanistae, training the young "bucks" who
aspire to glory in the arenas.

I invite you all to imbrace our group, as we wish to embrace you. There
is no reason why bruised egos or bad commuication should hinder us in
our MUTUAL desire to spread the word, the reality, and the truth about
ancient Rome. We do not have to be at odds, and I will gladly defer to
any Nova Romans who have constructive and cordial suggestions to make,
and to welcome any contributions that Nova Romans care to offer in word
or deed.

I can be reached at (631) 329-2430 at home. My address is:

John J. Ebel
P.O. Box 2146

I do hope to hear from some of you. Until then, I remain, Your Most
Humble and Obedient Servant . . .

Maximus Mecurius Minucius Gladius
"Palus Primus" Ludus Magnus Gladitore, and Elite Imperial Gladitorial
Bodyguard to His Excellency Emperor Domitianus.

Maximus
_____________________________________

In closing, I am pleased to say that I am honored to belong to the
"Ludus Maximus Gladitore" as well as to Legios XXIV and VI. I am also
an Associate Member of Legio XX. I am further pleased to forward this
message for Maximus, at his request, and I would ask of the Censors to
make a definite response in relation to Mr. Ebel's application for
admittance to Nova Roma and my sponsorship of him, based on the final
set of information sent to them, as they requested and required last
year, as well as my message accepting Maximus into the Gens Minucia.

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens
