Subject: [novaroma] Trash Talkin'...
From: cassius622@aol.com

Salvete,

This afternoon Patricia Cassia and I contributed a small service to
our neighborhood while contributing a small amount of cash to Nova
Roma. I'm posting about it here not to win applause, but to
illustrate how simple, ordinary actions can become more meaningful
when seen through the light of the Roman virtues.

On the street where we live, there is a fairly long stretch of woods
and wetlands, where some thoughtless individuals have seen fit to
cast dozens of beer bottles and a good bit of trash. We (and our dog
Milo, named for the famous Roman assassin) walked up and down the
area, picking up the bottles and trash that we found.

Maine has a "bottle law" - you pay a 5-cent deposit on each bottle
purchased, and bottles can be redeemed at the store to get the money
back. We loaded our bottles into the car and redeemed them. We hereby
offer our $10 donation to the Treasury based on this day's
work.

Giving your time and energy to improving the public spaces of your
community is an entirely Roman act, from the great emperors and their
temples to the crossroads colleges of the Subura. We plan to make our
small contribution an annual event.

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus
Senator, Pontifex Maximus
