Salve omnes,

I have recently been reading up on Julian, and was
wondering if anyone could help me with something that
has been bothering me. From works done on him, I was
wondering if anyone thinks he was a heroic failure, or
if there is some better way of describing his career?
Any help would be appreciated.

This post made me recall a recent program Discovery Channel (in

coincidence!

"Hortensius" belogs to a well-rounded Roman philosophy library? Well,
in that case... Can you tell me where I can get it? ;-)

I am a personal fan of his philosophical texts too, although I have
only read three of the books you mention. But I find it a bit
bothering how he always inclusdes reactionary propaganda
continuously. It's not that it is bothering but he is very
insistent...

Well, I' would read Cicero rather than Plotinus any day.

St. Augustine has some good things on neoplatonism. Not because they
are brilliant texts, but because he explains it quite succintly (in
order to thrash it).

As far as I know, Decebalus committed suicide before he could be
exectuted.

Salvete omnes cives

Well, I don't want to be offensive or anything but my sincere
appreciation of him is…

He was nuts.

No, really. I know he is sympathetic to pagans, as he tried to
restore and believed firmly in paganism (but hey, so did
heliogabalus). I also know we only know of him from his enemies, so
we should skip the historian's appreciations. He has nice moments
historians could not silence (as when he mocked his deification by
the senate), but still…

First, he organised a bloody persecution of Christians. Yes, we
should judge people by the standards of their eras but back then many
people did deplore persecutions. Christians were also intolerant
then, and soon began with their own persecutions, but if you condemn
one side you also have to condemn the other too for the same evil
(equal in nature, albeit different in size).
And he did so out of religious belief, not convenience, which is a
recipe for bloodiness and more unsympathetic to me.

Then, he was unrealistic. When reading about roman emperors you get
the impression that it was difficult for them to stay in touch with
the reality of the empire. His was a lost cause, and had been so for
years. His paganism had also little to do with mainstream paganism or
the Religio, and seems to me more a figment of his inner world. His
cruelties are perhaps exaggerated by historians, but some of his more
deranged statements seem more genuine to me.

What bothers me most is perhaps that he missed a good opportunity to
do good. In his days the Empire could still be reorganised,
reenlivened for a time. A Diocletian or a Trajan would have been
needed, not a Julian.

I'm sure some citizens will be happy to give you more information on
this emperor.

Vale.

LOL Well, I suppose I shouldn't have included that one, though I do have a
translation of what little there is left of it somewhere (I can't remember the
title; some collection of Cicero's works). So, it's not completely lost.

Well, Cicero subordinated philosophy to politics, so his texts are essentially
explanations of, and supports for, his political actions. It's no coincidence
that he wrote philosophy only when he couldn't practice politics.

I much agree.

It's been far too long since I read Augustine, and I didn't enjoy the
experience at all. Maybe I should give him another chance.

Ave,

If your going to start with Augustine try one of his earlier works or
his Confessions. Don't just jump into City of God.....thats just cruel
and unusual punishment.

I share part of the ideas Saverius exposed, but I want to defend
Julian a little, not because I think he was an excellent Emperor but
had, on my opinion, good ideas and a more realistic perspective of his
world than we can conceive.
He had a dream, we could say, but not the means to bring it to
reality. Tried to restore the spirit of his times, using Paganism as a
cohesive politic, but, and here I agree with Saverius, he wasn't very
successful because he had a strong opposition and maybe a very naive
vision of his Empire. He didn't use sometimes the ways we could check
as "correct" or "proper" ways, but in his time, who really did?
I do not defend him as historical person, but as historical pattern I
would say he was an ingenuous or candid man with some good ideas but
in a very bad moment. Maybe he had reign for more years, we could
speak of him some other way, not as a truncated project with more
shadows than light.
A bit romantic but is my feeling. ;-)

Vale,

Lucius Didius Geminus Sceptius

Salvete,

We just had this discussion on the college of Pontiffs list.

I believe the Iulian came too late to make any difference, Christianity was
emplaced,
and the days of "turning the other cheek" were past, the Church had political
power.
The Church did see him as a annoyance, and may have had him assassinated
during the Persian campaign.

Augustine, (required reading for any student in St. Augustine High School
which is where I met him) is a rabid catholic christian. However he goes to
great lengths to explain his reasoning why his theology is superior then the
old Roman worship. That in itself is rather entertaining.

Subject: [novaroma] ATTN [Religio Romana]: Nonis Martis (on March 7th)
From: "Antonio Grilo" <antonio.grilo@inov.pt>
Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 20:07:17 -0000
ANTONIVS GRYLLVS GRAECVS PONTIFEX OMNIBVS QVIRITIBVS

This is one of the dies fasti (F), when legal action is permitted.

This is the Nonae of Martius. Today the Rex Sacrorum proclaims the static
festivals ('feriae stativae') of the month from the citadel ('arx') of the
Capitoline Hill [Macrobius, Saturnalia, 1.15.10].

Today is the birthday of the temple of Vediovis in the Capitoline Hill. This
temple was probably dedicated in 192 BC. It lay 'inter duos lucos', that is
between the two summits of the Capitoline. Ovid associates this temple with
the very old enclosure which Romulus is said to have set aside 'inter duos
lucos' as a place for refuge ('asylum') [Ovidius, Fasti, III.429 seq.].
Dionysius of Halicarnassus adds that Romulus had also built a temple there,
but he himself does not know to which deity it was dedicated [Dionysius of
Halicarnassus, 2.15.4]. However, Ovid's association of this early site with
Vediovis seems not improbable, though some scholars believe the poet's idea
to be merely a piece of antiquarianism.
The temple of Vediovis was found in 1939 behind the Tabularium under a
corner of the Palazzo Senatorio building, together with the marble statue of
the god. This may have replaced a previous cult statue made of cypress wood,
which was still seen by Pliny who died in 79 AD [Plinius, De Naturalis
Historiae, 16.216], which may have been destroyed in the fire of 80 AD. The
statue was of Apolline type with a cloak hanging over the left arm, although
the arms and head were missing in the find. Together with the remains from
this late period, were found traces of a mid-second-century BC temple and of
the still earlier temple vowed by Purpureo (the one probably dedicated in
192 BC), and also much earlier seventh-century BC pottery.
Ovid says that Vediovis "Iuppiter est iuvenis" (is young Iuppiter), and
explains in this way the youthful face of the statue and the absence of
thunderbolts in his hand. Relating this with Greco-Roman mythology, he says
that Iuppiter assumed the thunderbolts after the Giants dared attempt to win
the sky, and that Iuppiter was first unarmed. He also says that a shegoat
was placed beside Vediovis.

Salvete Quirites.

I would like to suggest to those in charge of mantaining the
interactive calendar on the web site to update it to include the dies
fasti, nefasti and comitiales for the next few months.

I, at least, would find it very useful for my official duties as a
magistrate.

Thank you.

Gnaeus Salix Astur, what a great opportunity for me to remind all
that our calendar is interactive, and important dates can be easily
added by everyone, from the provincial to the pontifex. Just go to
the date, select the type of event from the pull-down menu, and, if
it is an annual event, you can note that too!

Yes, the article includes a photo of a frieze {sp?} from Trajan's
column depicting his death. Blame me for not being careful with my
wording!
