Even though originally I expressed my worry for Nova Roma in the hours after
the resignation of the Vedii, it was not based solely on the resignation of
Flavius Vedius. I do believe Nova Roma will not suffer much long term harm
from the resignation of one citizen, even if he is a founder of this nation.

Although, I was concerned about the possibility of wide spread discontent
among the senate. If our senate ceased to operate in an efficient and
dependable manner I do believe that it would present an alarming situation.
But fortunately our Consul Marcus Octavius had reassured me that wide spread
discontent among our senators is not taking place. In fact the resignations
of the Vedii, according to Marcus Octavius, were caused by a personal
dispute between the Vedii and the way the senate voted. Therefore the
situation I originally believed was taking place was actually not happening.

Marcus, I completely agree with you on the importance of this value. I
believe this would fall under the Roman virtue of Pietas. Dutifulness is
something I attempt to follow in all aspects of my life, and putting service
before ones self is one of the vital aspects of what citizenship truly
means. Here in Nova Roma we are a community and when taking part in this
community we must be aware of the good of Nova Roma and our fellow citizens
as a whole. This of course can apply for any organisation one takes part in.

Nicely done, quite nicely done.

Here it is, my fellow Romans, an example of what we must do.

Write the poems and prose, story and song, profound exposition and off-color story...

Salvete,

I don't mean to continue an unpleasant thread, but I've been doing some
thinking about the resignation of the Vedii and things in general. Hopefully
everyone will forgive me for just 'talking' for a bit.

For a long while before he resigned, Germanicus corresponded with me about
his waning interest in Nova Roma. Several times he complained that 'the dream
is dead", "Nova Roma is a failure", etc.

I was completely surprised by this - since I've been feeling exactly the
*opposite* way for the last few months. Germanicus and I created Nova Roma
four years and eighteen days ago.

After all this time I am still absolutely thrilled to be here.

Nova Roma has allowed me to meet others with similar interests, and has given
me community in an area of my life where I was once horribly isolated. Nova
Roma has given me the opportunity to worship the Roman Gods and to enjoy
'things Roman' alongside others - people I didn't even know existed four
years ago!

Nova Roma has been the place where I've learned an incredible amount of
things, from history, to dealing with others on a daily basis. It has not
only been a place I've made friends, but also a place where I've had to deal
with those I disagree with. It is the place that has taught me more than
anywhere else that the problems of today will be forgotten by next week.

Even more importantly, Nova Roma has continued to be completely *fascinating*
for the last four years. Almost every day there's something new. New people,
new ideas, new projects, new challenges, and even new arguments. In my
everyday life there have been times all the days start seeming the same. They
just kind of slide by. That *never* happens here.

Nova Roma has been the only thing I likely ever participate in that will be
remembered by history. There are many things in my life that are important to
ME, but so very few things that are important to the world in general. Except
this.

All those thoughts and feelings add up to the best thing of all... Nova Roma
has continually been a source of hope for the future. In everyday life I
pretty much know what will happen next year, and in the next ten years. Here,
the sky is the limit. There is a part of my life with unlimited opportunity,
unlimited potential, and a future that is guaranteed to be interesting.

No wonder I'm glad to be here, and am 'enthused about the future.'

So. Anyone want to do anything new and interesting today? Build a new
Sodalitas? Start a study group to investigate some part of the Roman world
and its history? Learn Explore ancient literature and philosophy? Learn
Latin? Hold a public event? Build community on the local and/or international
level? Create a ritual to the Gods?

I'm up for it, and can't wait to join ya. :)

Salvete Quirites,
Salve Marce Cassi Iuliani Pontifex.

Honoured Pontifex et Pater Patriae, you choosed the right words in the
current situation. I thank you for this. You described the behaviour,
and the spirit, we so urgently need now and in future.

I recieved my approval for citizenship 2 years and 4 days ago. During
this 2 years I found many new friends, and I had the chance to engage
myself in Sodalitates, as provincial official, and in the central
government. In this 2 years, Nova Roma made huge steps forward.

When I joined we had around 400 citizens, now we have ca. 1200. 1200
individuals, loving all things roman. 1200 citizens who wants to be a
part of the community. Of course, more or less active, but they found
their way to us.

Many left us, and each citizen going is a loss for Nova Roma. But I
also saw many citizens re-joining after they realized what they left.

The dream isn´t dead. We have so many citizens willing and able to
continue, to build a new Rome.

Ancient Rome lasted over 1000 years. We are now in our 5th year. Our
community, our Res Publica, will develope, grow and prosper.

Salvete Marce Cassi et Omnes,

Hear hear! Good to hear someone espouse the very many
positive aspects of Nova Roma. Very eloquently put.
The dream of NR is very far from 'dead'. How can it be
otherwise, given that we are an organisation that
encompasses and accomodates the dreams of so many. I
believe that as we continue to grow and incorporate
the aspirations and visions of those who continue to
join with us, this will forever remain the case.

Thank you very much, senator Audens.

I hope that this is seen as an example of what can be achieved with a
little provincial cooperation. We need to improve our provincial ties, gentlemen.

Salve Pater Patriae Ilustrus Marcus Cassius Julianus et Salvete Quirites!

I wholeheartedly agree that the "dream is not dead"! I have just
taken my seat in the Senate and I hope to continue to work there for
at least 25 years. Years that I expect to be full of success, even if
we of course will experience our share of failures.

The crisis that Nova Roma has went through recently, seem to pass
without any deep damage. My feeling is that we will come out stronger
than before. It isn't easy when new citizens or veterans leave, but I
am sure that Nova Roma is going to survive and even thrive. To me who
is new in the Senate the Senate doesn't seem to go through any
division at all. I am sure that the Senate will be divided at times
over points of issues, but in the end I have great hope to see the
Senate being able to continue to be the leadership that Nova Roma
needs!

Nova Roma is slowly becoming a dream come true and I for one want to
continue to be a part of it!

Salve Marcus Cassius Julianus,

Thank you for sharing these comments on the future of Nova Roma. It is this
enthusiasm that drives us all on towards our eventual goal. It is always
very pleasent to read comments like these and it's posts like these that
make me feel even prouder to be a part of Nova Roma.

I am disappointed about the resignations, although Nova Roma is indeed
moving forward and doing very well. Personally I am quite pleased to read
the tax report released recently by Marcus Minucius Audens. Sure, some
people may not agree on all issues surrounding the new tax, but it does look
very bright to see the amount of money we have raised through this. In my
time since I gained citizenship I have seen much growth in our numbers and I
have not even been here very long compared to most. The comming years will
be fascinating indeed and I am honoured to be given the chance to contribute
to Nova Roma in my small ways.

Subject: [novaroma] Resignations: Is there something wrong with NR ?
From: Michel Loos <loos@qt1.iq.usp.br>
Date: 20 Mar 2002 16:05:01 -0300
Salvete,

the recurrent phenomena of resignations of mecontent active citizens
made us all think about the situation in NR.

Both friends and opponents of mine act as if they were living in hard
dictature:

My friends (~the political opposition) resign from NR as a form of
voluntary exile because their voice is not heard, it is often true at
the senate level, but more then once laws have been proposed to the
people where our voices were counted and we regularly lost. If we are
not heared by the people we must try to convince them not resign,
rendering the next vote even more difficult. The votes are held, slowly,
but yet they are held, the tribunes can propose laws even against the
will of the senate : this is not a dictature and no need to leave, we
must just try harder to convince our co-cityzens.

My opponents (the Vedii and friends) resign from NR because they lost a
battle just like ex-dictators go to exile after losing the power. Again,
this is not a democratic attitude. In a democracy like NR, sometimes you
win sometimes you lose. In politics your allies can become your
opponents, it happens often since everybody has different ideas. This is
no reason to resign from NR, even if it can be areason for resigning
from a charge when you have no more the confiance of your allies.
NR is not "your thing". NR is a living nation which evolves and changes
with or without you, you are part of NR, NR is not part of you.

There is nothing wrong with NR, there are some things wrong with some
citizens, unfortunately very active citizens.

Vale
