Salve,
You may add Perge, Turkey and Side, Turkey to the list, though
neither are as grand as the one in Ephesus. If you'd like I can scan
pictures I took of all three and email them to you.

Avete Omnes,
Once again it is my sincere pleasure to take up the fasces for April.
It is my sincere honor to speak to all of you and to state my objective
for the coming month. This month, will hopefully be a bit less
stressful than February, but I believe will be just as productive.
Before I get to state my agenda, both for the Senate and the People I
want to reiterate that I am open for private emails, Instant messaging
conversations via ICQ, AIM, Yahoo and MSN. I am also available for
telephone calls, web cam conference and face to face meetings (within
Southern California). If any of you have any questions, suggestions,
concerns or comments please feel free to contact me. I will try to
respond as quickly as I can.
Now, lets get to the good stuff:
For the Comitia:
1. Lex Cornelia (title needed) - Census law
2. Lex Cornelia - Century points
3. Lex Octavia Cornelia (title needed) - Main list moderator proposal.
This is my tentative schedule. I will be posting the law proposals
within the next couple of days.
Respectfully,
Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix
Consul of Nova Roma

Praetor Pompeia Cornelia Strabo;
My response to Merlinia, was in reply to her message to me about how
much fun we were having insulting each other. I naturally thought that
if she was having a ball, I would up the ante a tad and really give her
a thrill!!!!
I see I must apologize for my comments, and intentions. I do so with
extreme regrets (-: (-: (-: . You see, my wife is the kind of a lady
who rides side-saddle on a gentle mare, when in the course of human
events, it is necessary for her to mount a horse. I have never noticed
that such has ever injured, in the least, either her dignity, nor her
effectiveness. I just naturally tend to think of all ladies in those
terms, my family bein' frm Texas and all, particularly Merlinia whom I
have met and admire greatly and my much admired Beneficarius.
However, if you wish, I can certainly change my view, I suppose, and
imagine both you and she astraddle a western saddle, pounding along on a
blooded quarter-horse. It won't be easy, mind, since I have always
considered you both ladies of the first class. However, if that's what
you want-----------------!!!!!! (Grin!!!!!!!!!!!) Whooppee, go on you
waddies whoop 'em up, and move 'em out, ---------------- but I don't
hold doors, render compliments give up my seat on a bus, or fetch
champagne for a smelly cow-hand!!!!!!! (Grin Again!!!!!!!!!)
Respectfully;
Marcus Minucius Audens
P.S. -- I am a reenactor, if you remember, and I eat my own cookin' 20
times a year -- fried sowbelly, hardtack (complete with weevils), bitter
coffee, and scorched beans. I can probably take anything any smelly,
grimy hardridin', beer-guzzlin' waddie can dish out!!!! (grin once
more!!!!!).

Honored Consul Sulla Felix;
Sir;
I hereby notify you that I will be absent until the 30 of April and
probably out of reach of a computer link. I wish, therefore, to give my
proxy to Senator Quintillianus during my absence. Should Senator
Quintillianus encounter some reason that he cannot cast his vote, my
second choice would be Senator Pompeia Cornelia Strabo. My third
choice, if the first two are not available, would be yourself. I thank
you for your attention to this message, and hope that my reasons and
proxy selections meet with your approval.

Honored Consul Sulla Felix;
Sir;
In regard to your first request for a possible Lex consideration, I
would agree that 3 years as a ProPraetor / Praetor of a Provincia may
well be indicative of a person who has the interests of his / her
province at heart, and therefore supposedly the interests of NR in
train. I am assuming that you mean in this proposal "three consecutive
years" of Governor service, rather than simply three years of Governors
service.
The first is a much more concievable consideration than the second. It
would certainly put such a person in line for consideration for a Senate
selection, IF the province has shown some significant activities and
gain during the Governor's tenure. My present thought is that
Propraetors can be presently considered as eligible for a Senate seat
much too soon. However, the problem with "automatic" is that it rules
out a number of situations which might be considered in addition to
being selected for three terms. There have been names put forward for
ProPraetor, whom I do not know at all, and have no knowledge of that
candidate's ability, effectiveness or fulfillment of the original
appointment. Nor do I have anything like an Annual Report or a "First
Hundred Days Report" from which to make a decision. It also flies in
the face of the Censors right of selection for admission to the Senate
as we presently know it.
While I am not thrilled with the reasoning provided by the Censors
regarding the attempted dropping of two of our number, nor am I
particularly excited regarding the results of the recent Senate Vote for
such a procedure and the Censor's immediate attitude toward that vote,
nor am I particularly happy about the period of time and effort it took
to get a reply to requests for information regarding the Censor's
actions in that whole situation. I tend to think, however, that the
problem may have had more to do with attitude and opportunity, than the
need for an Constitutional Amendment.
Therefore, in answer to your questions, I am not willing at this time to
give up on our present or future Censors, and the responsibilities given
them. However, it may well be, that the wording of the constitution may
need some additional support, as indicated by the phrasing therein. I
should be very interested, in addition, to hear what both of our Honored
Praetors have to say in regard to both of your questions.
Very Respectfully;
Marcus Minucius Audens

Salve Consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix,
It is great to see the awarding of century points being tackled. I am quite
excited to see what the proposed solution is! Currently our system is
terribly unfair to many hard working citizens. Overall, it looks like a very
productive month. I look forward to reading what the populace has to say on
all of these very important issues.
I am also curious of what the plan is for the Lex Cornelia de Rebus Ordinis
Equestris Agendis being put before the senate. I don't know if you are able
to answer this question, but I do hope it is soon. If this lex is passed it
will go far in improving the office of the curule aedile for those that will
hold this position in the future. It will also do much in returning the
status of this office back to the position it was in antiquity.

Yes, it is being tackled. My problem is that I have 2 ideas that seem
to oppose each other. One is focusing on the points (or some other name
that will be given to them). And another idea that I am not ready to
discuss yet. <g> Its still in the working stages. But, the points are
being tackled, definitely. There has to be a revision of them, I agree
completely. I am awaiting feedback from a couple of individuals before
I post the plan on the ML. I hope to have input by the end of the
weekend.

P. CORNELIA STRABO PRAETRIX SENATUS POPULESQUE NOVA ROMA
Today, I am honoured and privileged to formally open the Ludi
Circenses, the Chariot Races of the Festival of Magalesia, giving
honour to Magna Mater.
As we anticipate the beginning of the race, let us reflect on some
key elements. Regardless of who pulls their chariot in first as
victor, we 'all' share a victory at these games, whether we are
participants or spectators. Our victory lies within our honour and
celebration of this entire festival - in so doing we are embracing
our common love for Roman culture, virtue, and spirituality...these
treasured elements legacied to us all by the ancients. When we adopt
and pursue these elements in our lives we illuminate a sense of hope
and security for ourselves, each other, and to an often hurting world.
*************
I offer the following tributes of praise, holding forth a quantity of
fine Pannonian Wine:
To Magna Mater, and to all we as Nova Romani hold as righteous and
divine........AVE!!
To the Pontifex Maximus, Marcus Cassius Iulianus, co-founder of our
illustrious res Publica.....AVE!!
To the Senate of Nova Roma.....AVE!!
To our Esteemed Consuls, Marcus Octavius Germanicus et Lucius
Cornelius Sulla Felix II......AVE!!
To the Magistrates of Nova Roma....AVE!!
To each Citizen of Nova Roma, without whom we would have no res
Publica......AVE!!
To the Participants of these Luci Circenses.......AVE!!
To the Curule Aediles and their Assistants, Scriba, for their
organization of this Festival and the tremendous degree of work in
this.......AVE!!!
For our own private tributes during this festival.....AVE!!
I wish each charioteer Buona Fortuna in their race, and I now ask
each driver to get behind the start line................
ON YOUR MARK...............PREPARE TO BEGIN..........
Pompeia pours a libation of fine Pannonian wine, throws down her
gauntlet, and cries out at the top of her lungs...........
BEGIN THE RACE!!!!!!!!

Franciscus Apulus Caesar Omnibus S.P.D.
Salvete Wing's sons, other results for you, from Group E to H.
We see Semifinals very heavy and fired. Players like M. Octavius Germanicus,
C. Flvaius Diocletianus, J. Sempronia Magna, M. Minucius Audens and C.
Fabius Quintilianus will versus impudent and very speed chariots by C.
Curius Saturninus, C. Cornelius Ahenobarbus, M. Minucius Rufus, etc.
Incredible in the next Semifinals in just one group, the Group II, 3 members
of the Gens Minucia will run ... a real bad combination!
I officially announce the Start of the SEMIFINALS of the MEGALESIA LUDI
CIRCENSES. Good Luck!
Well, these are the results of the last groups.

History
Oh, Gods, finally the russata (reds) win a race. The wicked Hermanus
Martianus and his Ius Sanguinis's terrible horses are the happy and perverse
victors. Only Delecta Mea survived his lashes and obtained the
classification. The Flamma Dentata went out in the spina and Draco
immortalis lost his immortality very rapidly. The Veritas suffered
Martianus's harassment and the loss of a wheel, shocking against the already
famous spina.

History:
The praesina (greens) win again thanks to Lusitanus. But his lashes were
not the reason of the crash between Essedum Constantinum and Gallia Victrix.
Both cars hit in the last return in a curve for misfortune of their
factiones. On the driver Flavius Iaculator, the public was commenting, "
Iaculator, a name really very suggestive. "

History:
The praesina (greens) do not stop, another victory! The winner Cintia Domna
has a good car, I can not to say the same words on Tachydroma. Much name for
so little "droma". Mars Ultor is the happy second and the Cornix is the
eliminated third. Its driver Boudicca has promised eternal revenge against
Rome. A very slightly original reaction, I think.

The car of our most dear Aedilis is the winner in this race. The wicked
Choclea hit on the wall of the track before being able to damage with his
whip. Fulmen Viridis is the second "greener". Great race for the incredible
greens! The public shouts "Vivat praesina!" Unfortunately in this chance
just qualifies two chariots, for what Concha of Ambrosia Valeria must be
eliminated

Salvete fighters, the first turn of our Chariot Races are completed! Strong
and heavy battles in the circus about the factiones, Praesina wins with 7
players in semifinal. B.S.D. Liber by our Consul Marcus Octavius Germanicus
is the only chariot passing in Semifinals. Impressive tactics by our runners
have destroyed 14 chariots for a blood circus!

The Praeceps of Labienus Fortunatus hit against the wall of the circus,
since its driver relaxed looking at a blue girl in the first row, placed for
his ruin. The trap served in order that Turbio gained the race, followed by
the red Proeliator. The white Rosa Aestas of Kamikazus lost shamefully and
the upset Kamikazus did a bloody Hara-Kiri that provoked the plaudits of the
public, thinking that it was a surprise show.

Cruelicus was dragged during three laps. He needs urgently a facial surgeon.
The Leo of Lupercia Silo stumbled over the B.S.D. Liber of Octavius

hard and merciless horses.

History:
Segestum Furiae lashed terribly Aeterna of Curia Finnica and provoked her
crash on the spina. But then he got entangled in his whip and had to be
helped by the clercks of the circus. A shameful and unworthy fact of a good
driver. The great beneficiary was Apollo's car, the first green victor! "
Green man " Audens is happy now. Fastbeep was the second beneficiaries of
Segestum's stupidity.

Salve, Pompeia
You are quite right.
I mentioned that to him.
As to food, well... I hope you'll make it to Roman Days this year;
Thanks Hugely to Aselina I can concentrate on Breakfast and the
'Lay Down' Dinner. It should be awesome!
Vale!

Participants in the Megalesia Ludi Circenses:
I offer my "GREEN" congratulations to the winners of the first round of
races, and my sincerest "GREEN" condolences to the other contestants.
I am honored by my excellent "GREEN" chariot, "Apollo's Car," which
withstood the first test so well and which is now being strengthened for
the second assault. I have nothing but "GREEN" praise for my outstanding
"GREEN" team of coal black Arabians who have so valiently toiled to
victory adorned in thier bright "GREEN" harness. My thanks too, to my
excellent "GREEN" driver "Pilum" clothed in a "GREEN" tunic and helmet,
who is also my valued horsemaster and trainer. He now resides in a cozy
little "GREEN" house by the "GREEN" horse barns afloat upon a sea of
Falernian, and by now most likely aground on a reef of lobster shells
and cherry pits!!!!! All this surrounded by the charms of four lovely
"entertainers" whose exotic Eastern dances would warm the coldest marble
edifice.
I am extremely proud to stand beneath my banner of the brightest GREEN
and salute you all, who have given so much to the races to this point.
Further my heartiest congratulations to my fellow "GREENS" and to the
other members of the "Minucia" Gens who have established such a vicious
reputation, on this field of endeavor,so eary in th fight!!!!
Lastly My most sincere "GREEN" thanks to the Honored Consuls and the
Aediles who labor to bring us these games.
Most Sincerely "GREEN";

I am pleased to see that this interference with the other drivers
(exactly the sort of behaviour I have come to expect from the Blue
faction) has brought Cruelicus Maximus to his well-deserved reward!
I extend my condolences to Quaestor G. Popillius, and suggest he choose
his employees more carefully next time!

My chariot, B.S.D. Liber, is now assured of victory. Like its namesake,
its speed and reliability are unparalleled. Carolus Daemonus will
bring victory to the whites, and to the house of Octavius!
Valete, Octavius.

Salvete
Congratulations, Octavius Consul. The Albatae have no chance against
the Prasinae in the long run, of course, but Caius Daemonus did run an
excellent, clean race. And, one must admit that his chariot has a most
auspicious name.
In the meantime, anyone who wishes to see Horatius Peritus in the arena
again can do so in one week's time. He will be facing a collection of
exotic savage beasts from the far eastern provinces--and he'll do so
while armed with nothing more than a wet leek. A certain pretty girl
dressed in blue shall be joining him.

Salve Tiberi Labiene Fortunate!
I thank you for inviting the aforementioned pretty girl in blue to your
planned festivities, but sadly she had a pressing engagement in another
provincia. Perhaps a young lady of the Greens could be found instead to
accompany your driver in his latest performance? In any case, may I make
a friendly recommendation to you?
Since the honorable Horatius Peritus seems not likely to continue in
your employ for long, perhaps when seeking a new driver you can try to
find someone a bit more dexterous in evading the darts of Eros?
Ave Scorpus et Turbio! Ave Veneta!
Valete,
C. Minucius Hadrianus

[novaroma] MEGALESIA LUDI CIRCENSES - Semifinals Results |

Franciscus Apulus Caesar Omnibus S.P.D.
Two Green chariots versus one Red and one Blue in Final: these are the
incredible results of the Semifinals of the exciting Megalesia Ludi
Circenses!
After the too many "Accidents!" during the Quarters, the Semifinals look
just one destroyed chariot for group. The Circus is clean for the Final...
The Group II is the daily hot racer, three Minucii against the Blue
Cornelius. Allinace between the fratres or war in family?
And after, the first polemic voice, the driver Carolus Daemonus of the
B.S.D. Liber accuses the races for the too many high number of Greens! But
only two green chariots go in Final and here they'll meet the imperial
Aquilifer for the REDs and the speeder Phaeton for the BLUEs
Read below the results and the short histories of the races. You can read
too at
http://italia.novaroma.org/cohorsaedilis/ludi/megalesia/mlcsemifinals.htm
At http://italia.novaroma.org/cohorsaedilis/ludi/megalesia/tour.htm you can
check the next Turn and the Start lines of the Final.
------------------------------------------------------
= MEGALESIA LUDI CIRCENSES =
SEMIFINALS' RESULTS
**** GROUP I
= Inexpugnabilis
driver: Ignis
by Caius Curius Saturninus
Race tactic: (1)
= Proeliator
driver: Gustavus Barbarus
by Caeso Fabius Quintilianus
Race tactic: (2)
= B.S.D. Liber
driver: Carolus Daemonus
by M. Octavius Germanicus
Race tactic: (1)
= Fastbeep
driver: Ayrtonnus Sennae
by S. Adrianus Barcinonensis
Race tactic: (1)
Results
WINNER: Accidents!
2nd: Inexpugnabilis
3th: Proliaetor
4th: Fastbeep
GO IN FINAL: Inexpugnabilis
History:
Ignis and his Inexpugnabilis has given an insuperable lesson of chariot
conduction. The great Ben-Hur has commented that he already has a worthy
successor in the wonderful Ignis. The rivals of the "greener" only could
fight for the second place. The Praesina (greens) are unstoppable!
Carolus Daemonus, very angered after being doubled by Ignis, left his
chariot on the middle of the Arena in protest for " the evident favouritism
with the greens". The polemic is served.
------------------
**** GROUP II
= Turbio
driver: Scorpus
by G. Minucius Hadrianus
Race tactic: (2)
= Anonimous
driver: Titus Sertorius Albinus
by Servius Cornelius Cato
Race tactic: (4)
= Apollo´s car
driver: "Pilum"
by M. Minucius Audens
Race tactic: (3)
= Aquilifer
driver: Noefequix
by M. Minicius Rufus
Race tactic: (1)
Results
WINNER: Aquilifer
2nd: Anonimous
3th: Turbio
4th: Accidents!
GO IN FINAL: Aquilifer
History:
There were two blue cars in this semi-final, but they were not sufficient to
stop the red Aquilifer of Noefequix. The Anonimous of Minucius Adrianus
lashed wildly to the chariot of his relative Minucius Audens and it caused
the fatal accident of the Apollo´s car and the delay of Anonimous. As Nero
said: "The battles in the family aren´t a good way for the spiritual
tranquility, I know it." Meanwhile, the blue Turbid could not reach a
supersonic Aquilifer and therefore the Russata (reds) are in the final.
-------------------
**** GROUP III
= Ius Sanguinis
driver: Hermanus Martianus
by Marcus Arminius Maior
Race tactic: (4)
= Phaeton
driver: Flavius Iaculator
by G. Cornelius Ahenobarbus
Race tactic: (2)
= Apolus
driver: Aurora
by D. Cintia Domna
Race tactic: (3)
= Fulmen Viridis
driver: Nemo Ulysses
by Manius Villus Limitanus
Race tactic: (2)
Results
WINNER: Phaeton
2nd: Accidents!
3th: Ius Sanguinis
4th: Fulmen Viridis
GO IN FINAL: Phaeton
History:
The famous Flavius Iaculator continues harvesting victories on the Arena.
He is the bastion of the Veneta (blues) and its best representative in the
final. His car Phaeton dazzled his rivals and caused the accident of the
Apollus of Cintia Domna. Hermanus Martianus's whip nothing could do against
Phaeton's sheen. The Fulmen Viridis went out very soon.
-----------
**** GROUP IV
= Quadratus
driver: Lusitanus
by M. Durmius Sisena
Race tactic: (4)
= Delecta Mea
driver: Scorpianus
by Jullila Sempronia Magna
Race tactic: (2)
= Flavia Ferrata
driver: Spurius Diocles
by C. Flavius Diocletianus
Race tactic: (1)
= Mars Ultor
driver: Leonnatus
by S. Apollonius Scipio
Race tactic: (3)
Results
WINNER: Flavia Ferrata
2nd: Accidents!
3th: Quadratus
4th: Delecta Mea
GO IN FINAL: Flavia Ferrata
History:
Three greens against one red. It is evident that the red could not win ...
or to come to the goal. The wicked Lusitanus of Durmius Sisena pushed it
against the wall of the Arena. Mars Ultor will have to expect for its
revenge. Then the race was a walk of three green chariots. Flavia Ferrata
obtained the victory, though it is a victory for all greens. They have two
chariots in the final!

Salvete cives et amici,
Not successful in the chariot races? Why not try gladiator combat? Seeing
that the start of the Cerialia is only five days away, it is now time to
start organising the coming gladiator combats. If any citizens have any
gladiators they would like to enter in this contest, please follow the steps
below to enrol. Spots are limited to twelve participants so please hurry to
get your applications in! The deadline is April 15th.
GLADIATOR APPLICATION
STEP ONE:
Write all the following information as an email. Submit this email to
pkkt@bconnex.net with the subject as CERIALIA GLADIATOR APPLICATION.
STEP TWO:
Choose the strengths of your gladiator. Do this by assigning a number to
each of the different strengths below. When all the qualities are added up,
it must equal ten. The greater the number, the greater the skill level.
Gladiator quality categories. :
1) Experience
2) Speed
3) Endurance
4) Strength
5) Reflexes
STEP THREE:
Select five of the strategies below. You may use each strategy as many times
as you like. Please enter the strategies in the order you want to use them
during the battle.
1) Rage Attack: This is an attack where one disregards all defensive moves
and literary throws himself on his opponent in a sudden and brutal attack.
(Chance of wounding opponent= 40%. Chances of being wounded=60%)
2) Strategic Defence: This is an attack where one withholds attacking
until he can see an opportunity to strike.
(Chance of wounding opponent= 10%. Chance of being wounded=8%)
3) Strategic Attack: This is a strategy where one steadily attacks wearing
down his opponent.
(Chance of wounding opponent= 20% Chance of being wounded=15%)
4) Quick Dodging Defence: This is when one avoids his opponent completely
in an attempt to make the enemy tired.
(Chance of wounding opponent= 7%. Chance of being wounded=10%)
5) Cautious Defence: This is when one carefully blocks his opponent¹s
attacks until he can see a chance to strike.
(Chance of wounding opponent= 5%. Chance of being wounded=7%)
6) Cautious attack: This is an attack where one steadily but carefully
attacks his opponent, focusing not on killing his enemy, but on weakening
him.
(Chance of wounding opponent= 15%. Chance of being wounded=10%)
7) Lightning Attack: This is a very quick attack and is done to surprise
the enemy.
(Chance of wounding opponent= 25%. Chance of being wounded=20%)
STEP FOUR:
- Choose the name of your gladiator.
- Write your own Roman name.
- Write your email address.
STEP FIVE:
Choose what type of gladiator you wish to be.
Myrmillo:
- had a helmet with a fish crest, oblong shield and sword and usually fought
a retiarius.
Retiarius:
- was armed with a net and trident or dagger.
Samnis:
- had a short sword (gladius), visored helmet and oblong shield.
Thrax:
- was armed with a curved dagger (scimitar) and round shield.
STEP SIX:
Write a basic description of your gladiator. What he looks like, where he is
from etc.
HOW BATTLES ARE DECIDED
- The quality levels have different affects on the various selected
strategies. Some quality levels will make a strategy more successful, others
will make it less successful. (For example: A high speed level will make a
lightning attack slightly stronger.)
- A random computer generated number between 1 to 100 will decide if a
strategy has wounded an opponent. This number will be compared to the
percentage of the strategy. (For example: Lightning Attack has a 25% chance
of being successful. If the number selected by the computer is between 1 and
25 then the attack is successful.) If the attack was not successful another
number will be chosen to see if your opponent successfully avoided your
attack and was able to strike back. (For example: Your chances of being
wounded during a lighting attack is 20%. If the number generated is between
1 and 20, then your opponent successfully landed a strike on you.) This
process continues until one gladiator has been wounded three times.
- If a gladiator does not land a hit for five turns, he will collapse from
exhaustion, and automatically lose.
